Campgrounds near Lake St. Croix Beach overview
Lake St. Croix Beach sits on the Minnesota bank of the St. Croix River in Washington County, roughly 20 miles east of St. Paul. The small city had a population of just over 1,000 as of the most recent census, and its location puts RV travelers within easy reach of two distinct camping corridors: the wooded state parks along the St. Croix on the Minnesota side, and the tubing-and-camping resorts clustered along the Apple River in nearby Somerset, Wisconsin.
Across the river in Wisconsin, Willow River State Park is the anchor public campground for the area. The park features spectacular views of Willow Falls and the Willow River Gorge, with prairie remnants, scenic hiking trails, family and group campgrounds, lakeside picnic areas, and a nature center spread across roughly 2,800 acres of rolling countryside. Private options within a short drive include Apple River Hide-A-Way, Float-Rite Park, and Rivers Edge Campground, all oriented around Apple River tubing in Somerset.
For RV travelers who prefer a quieter base close to Stillwater, Golden Acres RV Park keeps guests within reach of both the St. Croix Valley and the Twin Cities.
Things to do near Lake St. Croix Beach
The St. Croix River defines most of the recreation here. Paddling, powerboating, and fishing are the main draws on the water, and the historic river town of Stillwater is a short drive north for restaurants, the lift bridge, and the Brown's Creek and Gateway state trails.
At Willow River State Park, more than 13 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, with the most popular destination being Willow Falls and the scenic overlooks of the river valley. Little Falls Lake offers leisurely paddling, kayaking, swimming, and a beach.
Tubing on the Apple River is the signature summer activity on the Wisconsin side. Operators including Apple River Hide-A-Way, Float-Rite Park, and Rivers Edge Campground run shuttles and tube rentals for floats through Somerset. Visitors enjoy a cooling, leisurely float down the river, and those seeking more excitement can pick up the pace by shooting the rapids.

At Willow River State Park there is a minimum 3-day booking for holiday weekends and a minimum 2-day stay from May 15 through October, and campsites can book up fast, especially on summer and holiday weekends. On the Wisconsin private side, most Apple River operations are tied to the tubing season: Apple River Hide-A-Way is open 24 hours a day from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with tubing available from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Shoulder seasons are quieter and cooler. Spring brings high water and mud, while fall delivers hardwood color along the river bluffs and much lower campground occupancy.

How to book campgrounds near Lake St. Croix Beach
Public campgrounds on the Minnesota side use the state's ReserveMN system. Reservations can be made the same day as arrival, and up to 120 days before the arrival date. Online reservations are available 24 hours a day except on the first day a reservation becomes available, when bookings cannot be made before 8 a.m. central time, and all state park and recreation area campsites are reservable.
Across the river, Willow River State Park Campground and other Wisconsin state parks operate on a longer window. Sites at Willow River can be reserved via the Wisconsin State Park reservation system, and campsite reservations open 11 months in advance. Reservations are required, and no walk-in campsites are available.
Private resorts along the Apple River, including Apple River Hide-A-Way, Float-Rite Park, and Rivers Edge Campground, along with Golden Acres RV Park near Stillwater, are booked directly through each operator by phone or website.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely in character. The terrain surrounding Willow River State Park's campgrounds is rugged, and campers may encounter steep bluffs. The 100 campground has few mature trees and no sites with full shade, and can accommodate tents through the largest recreational vehicles. Bring leveling blocks and expect gravel pads.
The Apple River resorts trend social and busy on weekends, with a party atmosphere and noise levels that may not suit families with young children. Weeknights and early-season stays are noticeably calmer, and several operators offer riverfront RV sites with hookups.
Plan for mosquitoes near the river in summer, standard bear-country food storage, and Wisconsin's firewood rules. Do not move firewood, as Wisconsin has restrictions on transporting it due to the risk of carrying tree pests and diseases.
