Campgrounds and RV parks near Landfall, MN

The St. Croix River drives most trip planning. Outdoor activities include canoeing and kayaking, wildlife viewing, fishing, hiking, biking and winter sports. At the Savanna - William O Brien State Park loop and neighboring Riverway sites, families use the swimming beach on spring-fed Lake Alice and the ADA-accessible Riverside Trail, which runs about a mile and a half with interpretive signage. Across the border, Willow River State Park draws crowds for its waterfall. Willow Falls has four viewpoints, seasoned kayakers can tackle the river rapids, Little Falls Lake offers cruising, kayaking, and swimming, and there are more than 13 miles of hiking trails plus paved bike trails. Historic Stillwater sits minutes from Landfall for restaurants, shops, and the lift bridge. Apple River Hide-A-Way sits near tubing outfitters on the Apple River, a popular summer float.

The camping season in this part of Minnesota and western Wisconsin runs roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall, with a shoulder that depends on frost. At Willow River State Park, the campground takes reservations from mid May through October, winter camping is first-come first-served, and all water systems are turned off and buildings closed October 1 through mid May. William O'Brien is different: the Savanna Campground is open year-round with 50-amp electric sites useful for RV travelers in colder months, while the Riverway loop and the park's dump station run mid-April through mid-October. Summer weekends are the peak. Sites at both state parks fill early for holiday weekends and July and August. Fall brings hardwood color along the St. Croix and quieter weekdays, though nights turn cold quickly by late September. Winter is a serious cold-weather season here. Winter camping is available at the Savanna Campground, with trails groomed for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing, and the Riverside Trail open for snowshoeing. Renters running an RV in winter should confirm water and dump-station status before arrival.

Terrain is rolling hardwood forest, glacial moraine, prairie remnants, and river bluffs. Roads inside the state parks accommodate large rigs: William O'Brien takes RVs up to 60 feet, and Willow River sites handle rigs up to about 55 feet. Site pads vary from paved to gravel to grass. Expect biting insects from late May through July, especially near river bottoms and Lake Alice. Cell service may be limited, so download maps and directions ahead of time, and park staff will check campers in at the campsite, so there is no need to stop at the office upon arrival. Firewood must stay local. Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, Wisconsin has restrictions for moving firewood, and Minnesota has similar rules. Buy on-site or from an approved local vendor.
