Campgrounds and RV parks near Mazeppa, MN

River recreation drives most trips. Tubing, kayaking, and shoreline fishing on the Zumbro are the core activities at Bluff Valley Campgrounds and Shades of Sherwood Campground, both of which run directly along the river. Inner tubing, rock climbing, hiking trails, and a heated swimming pool are on-site at Bluff Valley, while Shades of Sherwood has a waterpark, swimming, wagon rides, and playgrounds. Cyclists head to the paved Goodhue Pioneer State Trail and, from Haycreek Valley Campground, connect toward Red Wing. Volleyball, horseshoes, biking, hiking, and fishing are common in the Hay Creek area. Day trips to Rochester, Lake Pepin, and Frontenac State Park round out most family itineraries.

The camping season in this part of Minnesota is short and clearly defined. Most private campgrounds open in mid-April and close in late September or early October. Bluff Valley Campgrounds typically runs from mid-April through late September, and Shades of Sherwood Campground follows a similar spring-to-fall window. Haycreek Valley, Hidden Meadows, and Tillys keep to comparable seasonal schedules. Summer is peak season. It is normally the wettest of the seasons in the Rochester area due to the increased frequency of thunderstorms, with each summer month averaging four inches or greater of precipitation, and afternoon storms are common. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book heavily, especially holiday weekends, and river tubing peaks in July and August. Spring brings unpredictable weather and higher river flows; fall offers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong color along the bluffs. True winter runs from mid to late November into late March, when average temperatures are at or below freezing and most precipitation falls as snow, and private RV parks are closed. Winter camping in the region is limited to state parks such as Frontenac.

Sites vary widely. Bluff Valley Campgrounds is a large, activity-heavy park with 275 water and electric sites, riverside premium spots, and a busy weekend social scene; a complimentary dump station is provided rather than sewer at every site. Shades of Sherwood offers over 150 sites with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service on many sites, showers, restrooms, laundry, and a store. Hidden Meadows has back-in and pull-through sites plus tent sites, with 30 or 50 amp service, showers, laundry, and a dog park. Haycreek Valley Campground offers big-rig friendly sites with pull-throughs. Expect gravel access roads, spotty cell service in the river valleys, and quiet-hour rules enforced at family parks.
