Campgrounds near Prinsburg
Prinsburg sits in west-central Minnesota on the prairie edge, within an hour of several state parks and private RV parks that suit families and first-time renters. The surrounding Kandiyohi and Chippewa county lakes country gives RVers a mix of glacial lakes, hardwood groves, and remnant prairie, with paved routes and easy pull-through access from Highways 23 and 71.
Sibley State Park, near New London, is the largest and most developed public option in the area. Its Lakeview Campground sits on Lake Andrew and offers electric sites, showers, and a swim beach. Monson Lake State Park, a smaller unit northwest of Willmar, gives quieter lakeside camping with a short trail system and a fishing pier.
Private options include Prairie View RV Park and Campground and WestRich RV Park and Campground, which typically offer full hookups better suited to larger rigs and longer stays. Note that Upper Sioux Agency State Park, which included the Riverside campground area, was closed and transferred to the Upper Sioux Community in early 2024, so it is no longer available for public camping.
Things to do around Prinsburg
Water recreation drives the trip list here. Lake Andrew at Lakeview - Sibley State Park has a designated swim beach, a boat launch, and canoe and kayak rentals, plus a paddle route that portages between Swan, Henschien, Middle, and Andrew Lakes. Monson Lake State Park has a wooden fishing pier and a portage to West Sunburg Lake, with walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish in the mix.
On land, Sibley State Park has roughly 18 miles of hiking trails, including the climb to Mount Tom, one of the higher points within a 50-mile radius, plus paved bike trails and horse trails. Birders can look for white pelicans, herons, and western grebes at Monson Lake. Rainy afternoons are easy to fill in nearby Willmar and Spicer for groceries, dump stations, and supplies.

State park campgrounds in this part of Minnesota generally run from late spring through mid-autumn. Monson Lake operates seasonally, and Sibley State Park's Lakeview Campground follows a similar warm-season pattern, though a few sites and the camper cabins can be booked further into the shoulder seasons. Private parks in the area tend to open around ice-out in April and close after fall color, typically by mid-October.
July and August are the peak booking window. Weekends at Sibley State Park routinely sell out weeks in advance, and lakefront sites go first. June brings the highest average rainfall and active mosquitoes, but also long daylight and warm swimming water. September is a strong choice for RV travel: fewer bugs, cooler nights, and open reservation calendars.
Winter closes most campgrounds. Sibley State Park stays open for day use with cross-country ski, snowshoe, and snowmobile trails, but overnight RV camping in the area is effectively unavailable from November through March.
How to book near Prinsburg
Minnesota state park sites, including Lakeview at Sibley State Park and the campground at Monson Lake State Park, are reserved through the Minnesota DNR system at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757, up to 120 days in advance of arrival. Popular summer weekends should be locked in as soon as that window opens, since reservations are in high demand for weekends, campsites with electric hookups and at the most popular parks.
A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the camping fee, sold as a daily or annual pass at the park entrance or online. Private parks such as Prairie View RV Park and Campground and WestRich RV Park and Campground are booked directly with the property by phone or website, and often have more flexibility for last-minute midweek stays.
What to expect in Prinsburg
Expect small-town Minnesota infrastructure: two-lane highways, easy rig maneuvering, and short drives between towns for fuel, groceries, and dump stations. Roads into the state parks are paved and RV-friendly, though interior campground loops can be tight in older sections, so measure your rig before selecting a site.
Electric sites at Sibley and Monson Lake are typically 30-amp, with a limited number of 50-amp spots. Water fill is available at central spigots rather than at every site, and full sewer hookups are found mainly at private parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Willmar and thins out at the more remote lake sites.
Summer brings mosquitoes and biting flies, particularly near wetlands at Monson Lake, so pack repellent and screens. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in June and July, and severe weather watches should be monitored on any multi-day trip.
