Campgrounds near Renville, Minnesota
Renville sits in southwestern Minnesota's farm country north of the Minnesota River Valley, roughly two hours west of the Twin Cities. RV travelers use it as a base for river-valley recreation, small prairie lakes, and casino stays, with sites clustered along U.S. Highway 212 and State Highway 19.
Closer to town, Prairie View RV Park and Campground and WestRich RV Park and Campground offer hookup sites suited to shorter stays and easy access from local highways. Jackpot Junction Casino Campground in nearby Morton adds full hookups on paved pads next to the Lower Sioux Indian Community's casino and hotel.
For state-park camping, Monson Lake State Park lies northeast near Sunburg on a small, quiet lake and is managed out of Sibley State Park. Riverside - Upper Sioux Agency State Park, once located south along the Minnesota River near Granite Falls, is no longer available: the land was transferred to the Upper Sioux Community and the park permanently closed to the public in February 2024, so campers should plan around alternate sites in the area.
Things to do near Renville
Water and wildlife drive most trips. Monson Lake holds walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish, and a short portage links it to West Sunburg Lake for paddlers. Birdwatchers work the wetlands and hardwoods for American white pelicans, great blue herons, great egrets, wood ducks, and songbirds.
Hiking, prairie overlooks, and Dakota history sit along the Minnesota River corridor south of town. The valley near Granite Falls and Morton offers river views, historic sites tied to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and county parks along the river.
For a break from the outdoors, Jackpot Junction Casino Campground puts gaming, dining, and live entertainment within walking distance of the sites. Redwood Falls, a short drive away, has grocery stores, restaurants, and Alexander Ramsey Park with its waterfall and hiking trails.

The state park camping season in this part of Minnesota generally runs from late spring through mid-autumn. Monson Lake State Park's campground typically opens in early May and closes by early November, and Jackpot Junction Casino Campground operates on a seasonal basis from roughly mid-April through mid-October. Private parks such as Prairie View RV Park and Campground and WestRich RV Park and Campground tend to follow a similar warm-season window.
June is typically the wettest month in this area, and river-valley sites can flood in spring, so early-season campers should check conditions before arrival. July and August bring the warmest weather and the busiest campgrounds, with weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day filling first.
Fall brings cool nights, migrating waterfowl, and quieter campgrounds through September and October. Winters are cold and snowy, most campgrounds close, and access roads to remote sites may not be maintained.
How to book campgrounds near Renville
Minnesota state park campsites, including Monson Lake State Park, are reserved through the Minnesota DNR at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. The booking window opens 120 days before the arrival date at 8 a.m. Central Time, and popular weekends can fill quickly at that mark. A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Jackpot Junction Casino Campground is reserved through the casino, with check-in at the tour desk inside the casino. Prairie View RV Park and Campground and WestRich RV Park and Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own listings.
Summer weekends and holidays book out first, especially electric sites and pull-throughs sized for larger rigs. Cancellation-alert tools can help fill last-minute gaps at state parks.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of prairie, river-valley bluffs, and small glacial lakes rather than dense forest. State park campgrounds tend to be smaller and quieter, with basic amenities: Monson Lake State Park has 20 sites, six with electric hookups offering 20, 30, and 50-amp service, flush toilets and showers in a 1930s stone building, a boat launch, and a fishing pier, though there is no dump station on site and no direct lake access from individual sites.
Casino and private RV parks lean toward level concrete or paved pads with full hookups, 30 and 50-amp service, and pull-throughs that fit larger rigs. Jackpot Junction Casino Campground accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet with electric, water, sewer, a dump station, and Wi-Fi.
Cell coverage is uneven in the river valley and on rural back roads, so download maps ahead of time. Firewood should be purchased locally to prevent the spread of tree pests, and mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall.
