Campgrounds near Vadnais Heights
Vadnais Heights sits in the northeast Twin Cities metro, within an hour's drive of state parks along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and lake-country campgrounds in Washington and Anoka counties. The area suits RV renters who want a quiet base close to Saint Paul, with hookup sites, dump stations, and full-service parks all within a short drive.
Closest options include the Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake, a nonprofit facility open to military veterans and their sponsored guests, along with Ham Lake Resort and Golden Acres RV Park for privately operated stays. State-park camping is available at Savanna - William O Brien State Park north of Marine on St. Croix, and across the river in Wisconsin at Willow River State Park Campground near Hudson.
Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from mid-April through mid-October, with a smaller number of loops open year-round for cold-weather camping.
Things to do near Vadnais Heights
The St. Croix River Valley is the primary draw. At Savanna - William O Brien State Park, families can hike a network of trails through oak savanna, wetlands, and hardwood forest, swim at Lake Alice, and paddle the St. Croix. Naturalist programs run in summer, and several trails stay groomed for winter use.
Willow River State Park Campground offers access to Willow Falls, a cascade set in a deep gorge, plus swimming, paddling, and fishing on Little Falls Lake. Historic Stillwater is a short drive for riverfront dining and shopping.
Closer to town, Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake provides a swimming beach, fishing dock, and boat and kayak rentals directly on the water.

How to book campsites near Vadnais Heights
Minnesota state park sites, including both loops at Savanna - William O Brien State Park, are booked through the Minnesota DNR reservation system online or by phone at 866-857-2757. Reservations open 120 days in advance, and a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit (daily or annual) is required for entry.
Wisconsin state park sites at Willow River State Park Campground are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR system on ReserveAmerica. Sites open 11 months in advance, and holiday weekends have a three-night minimum with a two-night minimum from mid-May through October.
Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake takes reservations for stays of one week or longer year-round, with weekend reservations opening each spring; access is limited to eligible veterans, military families, and sponsored guests. Private parks such as Ham Lake Resort and Golden Acres RV Park book directly through the property.
What to expect
Expect a mix of wooded state-park sites and open private-park layouts. The Savanna loop at William O Brien has drive-in sites with 50-amp electric hookups; the Riverway loop offers 30-amp electric, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, and can accommodate larger rigs. Perimeter sites tend to be more wooded and private than interior sites.
Willow River's 100 and 300 loops offer flush toilets and showers, and the 100 loop can handle the largest RVs, though it has few mature trees.
Cell coverage is inconsistent inside state parks; plan on downloaded maps. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with quarantine rules on both sides of the river.

Campervan rental Vadnais Heights options sit in the middle at about $125 to $185 per night. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vadnais%20Heights%2C%20MinnesotaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota?
A standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Vadnais Heights and drive it anywhere in Minnesota. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. To book on RVezy you must be an approved driver, generally 25 or older, and ID verification is handled through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license and, if it is not in English, an International Driving Permit. Most first-time renters are surprised at how straightforward the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on planning that Lake Superior loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance included when I rent an RV in Vadnais Heights?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Vadnais Heights includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on I-35 or US-61 with real peace of mind. You choose the protection level that fits your comfort at checkout (the renter selects this, not the host), and it covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance covers situations like flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing if something unexpected happens between Vadnais Heights and your campground. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it removes the biggest worry most first-time renters have. Pick your plan, pack the cooler, and go.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Vadnais Heights RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Vadnais Heights. That means a consistent, transparent process whether you are renting a campervan for a weekend on the St. Croix or a Class A for a two-week trip to Voyageurs National Park. There is a refundable grace period right after booking, with additional flexibility depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. You will see the full policy laid out clearly during checkout. Book early to lock in your dates, knowing you have breathing room if plans shift.

Once you are rolling, your pup will love Vadnais-Sucker Lake Regional Park's leashed trails right in town, plus the off-leash dog park at Battle Creek Regional Park about 15 minutes south. Minnesota state park campgrounds, including William O'Brien and Interstate, are also dog-friendly on leash. Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size notes.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/pet_policy.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Vadnais Heights?

They will level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are typically based on distance and are shown on the listing. Filter by Delivery when searching to see hosts offering this service, then enjoy a true arrive-and-relax vacation.

Spring (April to mid-May) and late fall offer lower rental rates and quieter campgrounds, though nights can dip near freezing. Winter rentals are available with cold-weather-equipped RVs for ice fishing trips. Book your motorhome rental in Vadnais Heights 2 to 3 months out for July weekends.
weather.gov/mpx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, even on your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in Vadnais Heights provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump valves before you drive off. They will also share tips for the specific rig, like turning radius and height clearance (most Class C motorhomes are around 10 to 11 feet tall, well under typical interstate clearances). You can message your host with questions anytime during your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. Choose a smaller Class B campervan or 20-foot travel trailer for your first rental to make navigating Twin Cities traffic on I-694 much easier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Vadnais Heights includes 24/7 roadside assistance through RVezy's protection plans, so if you get a flat on I-35 heading to Duluth, run out of fuel near Hinckley, or have a battery issue at a campsite, one phone call gets help dispatched. Common services include tire changes, jump-starts, lockout help, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified shop. Your host is also a quick message away for questions about the specific RV, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Snap photos of the RV at pickup so any pre-existing items are documented and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Vadnais Heights RV rental into Wisconsin or Canada?
Yes to Wisconsin. Crossing the St. Croix River into Hudson, WI is just 20 minutes east of Vadnais Heights, and a popular RV road trip from Vadnais Heights heads into the Wisconsin Dells, Door County, or the Apostle Islands without any special paperwork. Canada trips (think Thunder Bay or Winnipeg) may be allowed depending on the host's permissions and insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm, and bring your passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. A Wisconsin loop through Willow River State Park and Bayfield pairs beautifully with a return through Minnesota's North Shore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Minnesota RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier parts to plan for your RV trip from Vadnais Heights. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG. A travel trailer towed by your own SUV typically drops your tow vehicle's MPG by about 25 to 30 percent. Minnesota gas prices generally run close to the national average, with diesel slightly higher. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop to Duluth and back in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $110 in fuel. Fill up off the interstate in towns like Forest Lake or Hinckley where prices often run lower than Twin Cities metro stations.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Vadnais Heights?
For Minnesota state parks like William O'Brien, Interstate, and Afton, reservations through the Minnesota DNR open up to 120 days in advance, which is the maximum window. Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day often sell out within minutes of release for the most popular electric sites. Ramsey County and regional parks like Lake Elmo and Bunker Hills typically open reservations several months out. Private parks like Minneapolis Northwest KOA are more flexible and often have midweek openings even in July. If state parks look full, check the DNR site Sunday and Monday evenings when other campers commonly release weekend holds.
stayatmnparks.com/What are local driving conditions like around Vadnais Heights?
Driving an RV in and out of Vadnais Heights is very manageable. The city sits right at I-35E and I-694, giving you quick access in any direction without navigating tight downtown streets. Avoid driving through downtown St. Paul or Minneapolis during weekday rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM) since I-94 and I-35W can be slow with a larger rig. Watch for lower clearances on a few older parkways near downtown St. Paul and the University of Minnesota. Winter trips from November through March require attention to snow, ice, and narrower plowed shoulders. Head north on I-35E and you are past traffic and into pine country within 30 minutes.
511mn.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Vadnais Heights?
Campgrounds near Vadnais Heights run the full range from rustic to full-service. Minnesota state parks like William O'Brien and regional parks like Lake Elmo Park Reserve typically offer 30/50-amp electric sites, drinking water, modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station (usually free for registered campers). Private parks like Minneapolis Northwest KOA add full hookups including sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Most regional parks like Bunker Hills include fire rings, picnic tables, and swimming areas. A Minnesota State Parks vehicle permit ($7 daily or $35 annual) is required to enter state parks, and it is worth it if you plan to visit several parks during your trip.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/vehicle_permits.htmlWhat's included inside the RV itself?
Most RV rentals in Vadnais Heights come well-equipped, so you can show up with just clothes and groceries. Expect a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, plus pots, dishes, and utensils in most listings. Bathrooms with a toilet and shower are standard in Class A, B, C, and most travel trailers. Sleeping arrangements range from 2 in a campervan rental Vadnais Heights option to 8 or more in a bunkhouse travel trailer, all with seatbelts for travel. Generators, air conditioning, furnace, TV, and outdoor awnings are common, and some hosts include outdoor chairs, grills, and even bikes. Bedding and towels vary by host, so scan the listing's amenities section and message the host to confirm specifics before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vadnais%20Heights%2C%20MinnesotaWhat add-ons can I get with my Vadnais Heights RV rental?
Hosts offering RV rental in Vadnais Heights, MN typically have a menu of helpful add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include delivery and setup (priced by distance), generator hours for off-grid camping near places like the Boundary Waters, linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, outdoor gear (camp chairs, grills, kayaks), and pet cleaning fees. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others offer unlimited mileage, with overage typically around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Vadnais Heights or greater Twin Cities area in the early afternoon, with drop-off in the late morning. Bundle delivery plus a linen package and you will truly arrive ready to relax.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vadnais%20Heights%2C%20MinnesotaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your motorhome rental in Vadnais Heights is handled securely through the RVezy platform, never in cash to the host. You pay the rental total when you book (or split it into installments if offered at checkout), and the security deposit is placed as a temporary authorization hold on your card a few days before pickup, not charged. Deposit amounts vary by RV class, typically $500 to $1,500. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, with tanks per the host's instructions and no traffic violations, the hold is released after your trip. Take date-stamped photos and a short walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off for a smooth deposit release.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in winter for ice fishing or snow trips?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Vadnais Heights are possible and a true Minnesota experience. Several hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces built for sub-zero nights. Plan for shore power hookups, since dry camping below 20°F drains batteries quickly. Popular winter trips include ice fishing on Mille Lacs or Lake Vermilion, snowmobiling around Hayward, WI, and staying at year-round state park sites such as Afton or Fort Snelling. Many private parks close from November to April, so confirm your campground is open and plowed. Ask the host for a winter walkthrough covering heat tape, skirting, and tank treatment so you stay cozy even when temperatures drop well below zero.
