RV campgrounds near White Bear Lake, Minnesota
White Bear Lake sits in the northeast Twin Cities metro, putting RV travelers within about an hour of Minnesota state parks, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, and private RV parks near the Wisconsin border. The city itself is residential, so most campgrounds cluster north and east, toward Big Marine Lake, Ham Lake, Marine on St. Croix, and the Apple River across the state line.
The closest option is the Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake, a lakeside site with limited eligibility. Golden Acres RV Park and Ham Lake Resort offer private RV camping within easy reach of the metro. For state-park camping, Savanna - William O Brien State Park is the nearest Minnesota DNR option, about an hour north along the St. Croix River. Apple River Hide-A-Way sits across the border in Wisconsin and adds tubing to the mix.
Most sites accommodate travel trailers and Class C rentals; larger Class A rigs should confirm site length and turning radius before booking.
Things to do near White Bear Lake
White Bear Lake itself is the main draw in town, with a swimming beach, boat rentals, and a walkable downtown for provisioning. Ramsey County parks around the lake add picnic areas, paved trails, and playgrounds suited to families staying in an RV nearby.
A short drive east reaches the St. Croix River corridor. William O'Brien State Park has two campgrounds along the St. Croix River, with the Savanna campground on higher ground and the Riverway campground along the riverbank, plus miles of hiking trails, a swimming beach at Lake Alice, and a visitor center. In summer, tubing on the Apple River from Apple River Hide-A-Way is a popular half-day trip.
Stillwater, roughly 20 minutes from White Bear Lake, offers a historic downtown along the river with restaurants, paddlewheel cruises, and the Stillwater Lift Bridge. The Twin Cities put professional sports, zoos, and the Mall of America within easy reach.

The prime RV season runs from late May through early October. Summer weekends draw the heaviest demand: state park sites at William O'Brien and private parks like Golden Acres RV Park commonly fill weeks ahead for Friday and Saturday nights, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, with better site availability and lower bug pressure. Fall color along the St. Croix River typically peaks in early to mid-October and is a popular window for shorter trips. Black flies and mosquitoes are heaviest from late May into July, so bring repellent.
Winter camping is limited. Savanna Campground is open year-round and includes sites with 50-amp electric hookups, which are especially useful for RV travelers in colder months, and the park's trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing. Most private RV parks in the area close from roughly mid-October through April.

How to book campgrounds near White Bear Lake
Minnesota state park sites, including Savanna - William O Brien State Park, are reserved through the Minnesota DNR reservation system, online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 120 days before the arrival date, and popular summer weekends usually book out at the four-month opening. Overnight guests need a state park vehicle permit in addition to a camping or lodging reservation.
Private parks such as Golden Acres RV Park, Ham Lake Resort, and Apple River Hide-A-Way are booked directly through each park's website or by phone. Weekend and holiday stays often carry two- or three-night minimums in peak season.
The Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake is restricted to eligible veterans and their guests, with reservations handled through its own program rather than a public booking platform.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Private RV parks around White Bear Lake generally offer full hookups, dump stations, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Sites tend to be grassy or gravel pull-throughs and back-ins, with mature tree cover typical of the region.
State park camping is more rustic. Savanna Campground is wooded with 65 sites, 37 of which have 50-amp electric hookups, and water, flush toilets, and showers are available from mid-April until mid-October, with one dump station serving both campgrounds. Water hookups at individual sites are not standard; plan to fill tanks at the entrance.
Expect mosquitoes near wooded and wetland sites through midsummer. Cell coverage is generally strong close to the metro and along Highway 95, but weaker at Apple River sites in Wisconsin. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Minnesota's emerald ash borer rules; do not bring wood from home.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in dates with confidence. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. Review the current policy on the RVezy Help Center before you book. dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in White Bear Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in White Bear Lake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip city driving on I-694. Many hosts will tow or drive your rental directly to your campsite at William O'Brien State Park, Lake Elmo Park Reserve, or even your own driveway in the Twin Cities, then set up the awning, level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter to see hosts offering this service and check their per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery to a state park is gold for families because you arrive to a fully-ready campsite and only need to focus on unpacking the s'mores.

Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you plan to circle Lake Superior, where the loop alone tops 1,300 miles.

dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/stay_overnight/index.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from White Bear Lake?
Late May through early October is prime time for your White Bear Lake RV trip, with average highs climbing from 65°F in May to 80°F in July before easing into the 70s in September. June through August offer the warmest lake-swimming weather but also the most mosquitoes and the busiest campgrounds. September is the local insider favorite: warm days, cool nights in the 50s, fewer bugs, and the start of stunning fall color along the St. Croix River. Winter RVing is possible too, especially with a four-season rig, for ice fishing on White Bear Lake itself or chasing the Northern Lights up in Voyageurs. Pro tip: book a late-September trip to catch peak North Shore color near Gooseberry Falls.
weather.gov/mpx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, first time renting an RV in White Bear Lake is genuinely beginner-friendly. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump station, and they stay reachable by message throughout your trip. Class C motorhomes and smaller travel trailers drive much like a large van or pickup truck, and quiet suburban streets around White Bear Lake plus Highway 61 north out of town are forgiving places to get your feet wet. If interstate merging onto I-35E or I-694 feels intimidating, choose delivery so you skip the metro driving entirely. Pro tip: take your first practice loop around Bald Eagle Lake before heading farther north.
dot.state.mn.us/safety/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every White Bear Lake RV rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering towing, flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and jump-starts whether you are at Tettegouche State Park or just south of town on I-694. Call the number on your trip details and a technician will be dispatched to your location. You can also message your host through the RVezy app for system-specific questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. RVezy support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV into Wisconsin or across the Canadian border?
Yes to Wisconsin, almost always. White Bear Lake sits just 20 minutes from the St. Croix River crossing into Wisconsin, and most hosts welcome trips to Hudson, the Apostle Islands, or Devil's Lake State Park. Crossing into Canada (think Thunder Bay or Winnipeg) requires the host's written approval and confirmation that the protection package extends across the border, so message them from the listing before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: bring your passport even for short Canadian hops, and ask the host about adding extra mileage if you are eyeing a big RV road trip from White Bear Lake up around Lake Superior.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat is fuel like, and how should I budget for gas?
Plan a realistic fuel budget and you will not be surprised. Minnesota gas prices typically run between $3.00 and $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded according to AAA, and diesel runs a bit higher. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 14 to 18 MPG for a campervan, and 12 to 15 MPG for a truck pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 300-mile round trip from White Bear Lake to Duluth and back in a Class C, that works out to roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: top off at the Costco or Sam's Club on University Avenue in St. Paul before leaving town for the lowest prices in the metro.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=MNHow far ahead should I book a campground near White Bear Lake?
For Minnesota state parks, reservations open exactly 120 days before arrival through the DNR, and prime summer weekends at William O'Brien, Afton, and Interstate State Park often sell out within minutes of release. Mark your calendar for 8:00 a.m. Central on the 120-day mark and book online at mndnr.gov/reservations. County parks like Lake Elmo Park Reserve and private RV parks generally book 3 to 6 months ahead for July and August weekends. For shoulder season trips in May or September, two to four weeks notice is usually plenty. Pro tip: if you miss the initial release, check back the night before, as cancellations free up popular sites with no reservation fee for same-day bookings.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/rules.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around White Bear Lake?
Driving in and out of White Bear Lake is straightforward. The town sits along I-35E and Highway 61 just 15 miles northeast of downtown St. Paul, so most of your route will be wide, well-maintained suburban roads and rural highways. Avoid downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul during 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. rush hours, watch for low railroad bridges in older neighborhoods (your host will share the RV's exact height at pickup), and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk on Highway 96 and Highway 61 north of town. In winter, plan for snow, ice, and reduced daylight. Pro tip: the loop around White Bear Lake on County Road E is a perfect 10-mile shakedown drive before heading north.
dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near White Bear Lake offer?
You have a lot of choice. Minnesota state park campgrounds like William O'Brien and Afton offer electric hookups (20/30/50 amp at many sites), drinking water spigots, modern restrooms with hot showers, and a sanitary dump station, though full water-and-sewer hookups at the site are limited. Private parks like Wildwood RV Park near White Bear Lake and Bayport Campground in Stillwater provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. To fill fresh water and dump tanks for free, the Minnesota DNR offers a public dump station at most state parks (included with your camping fee or with a vehicle permit). Pro tip: confirm your site's parking pad length on the reservation site, since rigs over 30 feet need specific pull-throughs.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping/index.htmlWhat is included inside the RV itself?
Your White Bear Lake RV rental arrives camp-ready. Expect comfortable beds (queens in most Class C motorhomes, bunks for the kids in family rigs), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for everyone in your party. Most listings include cookware, dishes, linens, and towels, though some hosts charge a small fee for a starter kit, so check the listing details. Many motorhome rentals in White Bear Lake also include a generator, exterior speakers, a TV, and a backup camera. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count to make sure everyone has a real bed, not a kid-sized dinette conversion.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts offering campervan rental in White Bear Lake and full motorhome rental in White Bear Lake list a range of popular add-ons: bike racks (typically $25 to $50/trip), kayak or paddleboard rentals, generators, outdoor patio mats, camp chairs, propane fire pits, linen and kitchen kits, and pet packages. Pickup usually happens at the host's home, often in White Bear Lake, Hugo, Vadnais Heights, or Mahtomedi, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough. Drop-off is at the same location unless you arrange delivery. Mileage policies vary, so always check the per-night allowance before booking. Pro tip: ask your host about including a Minnesota state park vehicle permit ($7 daily or $35 annual) to save a stop on day one.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/vehicle_permits.htmlHow does payment work, and what about the security deposit?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. When you book, the rental cost, service fee, and chosen protection plan are itemized upfront so there are no surprises. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is held separately from the booking payment shortly before your trip and released after a successful return, assuming no damage or extra mileage charges. Never pay your host directly outside the platform, as doing so voids your protection plan and roadside assistance. Pro tip: do a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off in White Bear Lake and save it to your phone for peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather and winter RV trips from White Bear Lake?
Winter RVing from White Bear Lake is absolutely an option, and it can be magical for ice fishing on the lake or chasing the aurora in northern Minnesota. January averages a high of about 20°F and a low of 7°F, so you will want a four-season rig with heated and enclosed holding tanks, a working propane furnace, and shore power capability. Filter for hosts who specifically list winter-ready RVs and confirm antifreeze is in the lines. Many local campgrounds close from late October to April, but William O'Brien State Park stays open year-round with electric sites. Pro tip: pack extra propane (heat eats through it fast), tire chains, and a heated water hose if you plan to hook up at a frozen site.
