Gerlach camping overview
Gerlach is a small high-desert community in northwestern Nevada, roughly 100 miles north of Reno, sitting at about 3,944 feet in elevation. It serves as the primary gateway town for the Black Rock Desert playa and the surrounding public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. RV travelers use Gerlach as a staging point for fuel, water, and supplies before heading onto remote roads.
Developed campgrounds in the immediate Gerlach area are limited, so most RV renters base themselves at nearby destinations. Pyramid Lake Marina RV Park and Candy Beach Campground sit along Pyramid Lake to the south, on Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe land. West Side - Rye Patch State Recreation Area lies to the east near Lovelock, adjoining an 11,000-acre reservoir on the Humboldt River.
For longer regional loops, Days End RV Park and Likely Place Golf and RV Resort in northeastern California provide additional full-service stops within a half-day drive.
Things to do near Gerlach
The Black Rock Desert playa is the region's headline attraction, drawing visitors for land-speed events, star-gazing, and open-sky driving on the dry lakebed when conditions allow. Nearby hot springs, including Trego and Soldier Meadows, are popular but require careful navigation on unpaved roads and respect for private and tribal land boundaries.
Pyramid Lake, on the Paiute Reservation, offers boat launching, beach camping, and Lahontan cutthroat trout fishing in season. Anglers and day-users need a tribal permit, available online and at local vendors.
Rye Patch Reservoir supports boating, swimming, and warm-water fishing for walleye, catfish, white bass, and crappie, and the surrounding hills are used for rockhounding. High Rock Canyon and the California National Historic Trail corridor provide backcountry driving routes for high-clearance vehicles.

Gerlach has a cold semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters that bring regular snowfall. Precipitation is low year-round, and the playa surface is only safe for driving when fully dry, typically from late spring through early fall.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures and cool nights. Summer daytime highs frequently exceed 90°F, and shade is scarce on the playa and at open reservoir sites, so travelers should plan for heat, dust, and strong afternoon winds. Wildfire smoke can affect visibility from mid-summer into September.
Winter brings freezing temperatures, ice, and occasional snow. Many remote roads become impassable when the playa is wet or muddy, and services in town are limited. During the Burning Man event window in late August and early September, Gerlach traffic and demand for fuel, water, and dump stations spike sharply.
How to book RV sites near Gerlach
Nevada State Parks sites, including West Side - Rye Patch State Recreation Area, are handled through the Reserve Nevada system, which opens bookings from three days to eleven months ahead at 8 a.m. Pacific. Rye Patch also keeps first-come, first-served sites, and the park is open year-round.
Camping on Pyramid Lake, including Pyramid Lake Marina RV Park and Candy Beach Campground, requires a Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe camping permit in addition to any site fee. Permits are sold online through the tribe's official portal and at ranger stations and local stores around the lake.
Private parks such as Days End RV Park and Likely Place Golf and RV Resort accept direct bookings by phone or through their websites. Dispersed camping on the Black Rock Desert playa is subject to BLM rules and event-season closures.
What to expect on the ground
This is remote high-desert country. Cell service is spotty or absent outside of Gerlach, Empire, and the highway corridors, and the nearest full-service grocery and hospital are in Fernley or Reno. Travelers should top off fuel, fresh water, and propane whenever possible and carry extra of each.
Roads onto the playa and into the surrounding backcountry are unpaved and often washboarded. Rental RVs, especially larger Class A and Class C rigs, should stay on maintained roads and avoid the playa when it is damp. Alkali dust is fine and abrasive, and it can coat slide seals, awnings, and mechanical components.
Campground amenities range from full hookups at private parks to flush toilets, showers, and dump stations at Rye Patch. Pack for wide temperature swings, secure loose items against wind, and follow Leave No Trace practices in dispersed areas.
