Campgrounds near Annandale, New Jersey
Annandale sits in Hunterdon County, western New Jersey, within a short drive of several state-run campgrounds in the Highlands region. The closest public option is Voorhees State Park, a wooded park in the rolling hills of northern Hunterdon County with family campsites, group sites, and cabin-style shelters. A few miles west, Spruce Run Recreation Area occupies land along the 1,290-acre Spruce Run Reservoir and its park office administers reservations for both Spruce Run and Voorhees.
Farther north in Hackettstown, Stephens State Park provides riverside tent and small-trailer sites along the Musconetcong River, with hiking and trout fishing on the doorstep. Private and semi-private options in the area include Mountainview Campground and Goodland Country Club and Spa, which broaden the mix for RV travelers looking for hookups or resort-style amenities.
Most public campgrounds in this corner of New Jersey operate seasonally, roughly April through October, and reservations move through the state's central booking portal. RV travelers should check individual site length limits and hookup availability before booking, since electric and water sites are limited.
Things to do near Annandale
Water recreation anchors the area. Spruce Run Reservoir holds 29 species of fish, including stocked trout, northern pike, and hybrid bass, and supports boating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and windsurfing. State rules require boats to leave the water when sustained winds reach or exceed 25 mph.
Hiking and biking are equally strong. Voorhees State Park has eleven multi-use trails covering about nine miles through deciduous forest and CCC-era pine plantations, plus an observatory operated by the New Jersey Astronomical Association with year-round public stargazing programs. Stephens State Park adds about six miles of trails for walking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with a two-mile section of the Highlands Trail running the length of the park.
Off-park attractions include the historic town of Clinton, the Columbia Trail rail-trail, and trout fishing on Willoughby Brook, a designated Wild Trout Stream inside Voorhees.

State campgrounds in the Annandale area follow a strict operating window: family campsites, shelters, and group sites at Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, and Stephens State Park are open April 1 through October 31. The trailer sanitary dump station at Spruce Run runs on the same schedule. Outside this window, day-use access continues for hiking, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing, but overnight camping is not available at the state parks.
Late spring through early fall is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly at Spruce Run, and holiday weekends at all three parks book out well in advance. The Spruce Run swim beach has been closed under a park advisory, so visitors should confirm status with the park office before planning a beach day.
Shoulder months (April, May, September, October) tend to offer more site availability, cooler nights, and lighter bug pressure. Fall brings strong hardwood color across Hunterdon and Morris counties, and Voorhees' overlooks toward Round Valley and Spruce Run reservoirs are best after leaf drop.

How to book Annandale campgrounds
Reservations at Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, and Stephens State Park go through the New Jersey State Parks reservation system at camping.nj.gov. Voorhees and its campgrounds are administered by the Spruce Run park office, reachable at 908-638-8572; the Stephens office handles questions for that park at 908-852-3790.
When reserving, specify the setup (tent, trailer, RV, shelter, or cabin) and note any hookup needs. Spruce Run has seven trailer-only sites with 30/50-amp electric and water hook-ups. Voorhees and Stephens are non-hookup, and Stephens has no on-site dump station. Pets are permitted only at designated pet-friendly sites, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all New Jersey state parks. A non-refundable transaction fee applies to each reservation, and no-show reservations are not refunded. Mountainview Campground and Goodland Country Club and Spa should be booked directly through their operators.
What to expect at Annandale campgrounds
Sites at Voorhees, Spruce Run, and Stephens are equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, with modern flush toilets and hot showers within walking distance. Sites are generally shaded and wooded, though Spruce Run has a mix of open and shaded terrain, and some sites there sit close to the reservoir. Registered campers may have up to two vehicles per site; additional vehicles incur a nightly fee.
RV travelers should note that maximum trailer lengths vary by site, and low-hanging branches are common in older campground loops. Firewood is not provided at overnight facilities but can be purchased at some park offices. Cellular coverage is generally usable across the area.
Black bears are present throughout northern New Jersey, so food should be stored in sealed containers inside a vehicle. Ticks are active from spring through fall; regular tick checks are advised.
