Campgrounds and RV parks near Atlantic Highlands, NJ

Atlantic Highlands sits on Raritan Bay at the base of the Navesink Highlands in Monmouth County, New Jersey, roughly an hour from New York City by road. The nearest camping is inside Gateway National Recreation Area, a federal park that covers 26,000 acres of New Jersey and three New York City boroughs, and options broaden quickly as travellers move inland into central New Jersey. The closest developed sites for RVers are at Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area across the bay in Brooklyn, where both tent and RV camping are available, though water and electric hookups are not provided. On the Sandy Hook peninsula itself, Camp Gateway is walk-in, tent-only camping with no vehicles allowed at the sites. Inland, Allaire State Park offers a wooded campground on the Manasquan River, Turkey Swamp Park adds electric and water hookups in Freehold Township, and Pine Cone Campgrounds provides a private option in the Jackson area. For travellers pairing the trip with New York City, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest full-hookup urban option.

Camp Gateway on Sandy Hook and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field are federal campgrounds, so reservations are required and are handled through Recreation.gov. Sandy Hook sites can be booked up to six months in advance. Sites are limited and demand from the New York and North Jersey metro is heavy, so book early for summer weekends. New Jersey state parks, including Allaire State Park, take bookings through the state's NJ Outdoors portal, with a reservation window of up to 11 months in advance. Turkey Swamp Park is operated by Monmouth County Park System and reservations are handled directly by the county, online or by phone. Pine Cone Campgrounds and Liberty Harbor RV Park are private operators and take reservations directly. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type at booking, since not every site fits larger motorhomes or fifth-wheels.
