Campgrounds and RV parks near Basking Ridge, NJ

Outdoor activities cluster around water, trails, and dark skies. Stephens State Park features fishing in the trout-stocked waters of the Musconetcong River, along with picnic tables, grills, and hiking and mountain biking trails. During spring, NJ Fish and Wildlife stock the river with brown, rainbow, and brook trout, and a two-mile section of the Highlands Trail runs through the park. Voorhees State Park draws stargazers and hikers. The New Jersey Astronomical Association operates the on-site Paul Robinson Observatory, home to a 26-inch reflector telescope, and offers public sky-watch programs. The park's multi-use trails suit hikers and mountain bikers, with two footpath-only routes. Panther Lake Camping Resort centers on water recreation, with a 45-acre lake for fishing, boating, and swimming, plus a sand beach, pool, and pavilion. Families visiting the region also head to Morristown National Historical Park and the Great Swamp trails.

The prime RV season in northern New Jersey runs roughly from mid-April through late October. Private and state campgrounds follow that pattern: at Voorhees State Park, family campsites, shelters, and group campsites are available from April 1 through October 31, and Panther Lake Camping Resort operates April 15 through October 31. Stephens State Park campsites also run April 1 through October 31. Spring brings trout stocking, wildflowers, and cool nights. Summer is the busiest window, with warm days ideal for swimming and lake use, though weekend sites fill fast and holiday weekends can book out weeks ahead. Fall delivers foliage across the Highlands, cooler hiking weather, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter camping options are limited. At Voorhees, the trailer sanitary station operates April 1 through October 31, while campsites and cabins remain accessible year-round. Snow, ice, and closed water systems make cold-weather trips better suited to self-contained rigs. Black bears are active in the region, so food storage rules apply from spring through fall.

State-park camping in this area is rustic by design. Expect flush toilets and showers within walking distance in the developed loops, and limited or no hookups at the sites themselves. At Voorhees, dogs are permitted in the day areas of the park, but the campground is not pet-friendly, and alcohol is prohibited. Pet rules vary by park, so check before arrival. Private resorts offer a different experience. Panther Lake includes a pool, sand beach, general store, laundry, and organized weekend activities, and the majority of sites house seasonal residents, creating a neighborhood atmosphere. Cell service is inconsistent in the wooded parks and lake areas, including much of Panther Lake outside the entrance, pool, and pavilion zones. Black bears are present throughout northern New Jersey, so store food in vehicles or bear-resistant containers and keep grills clean.
