Campgrounds and RV parks near Beach Haven, NJ

The main draw is the LBI beachfront: swimming, surfing, and a walkable downtown Beach Haven with the Fantasy Island amusement park and the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park anchors the north end of the island and is worth the drive for the climb and the jetty views. On the bay side, families can rent kayaks or paddleboards, book a fishing charter out of Beach Haven, or crab in the back bays. Bass River State Forest features a lake for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, plus hiking trails accessible right from the camping area. Several hiking trails suit various skill levels, and the Batona Trail is a notable route that passes through the forest. Inland day trips include the Tuckerton Seaport maritime museum and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, a good stop for birding and salt-marsh drives.

The Jersey Shore camping season runs roughly late April through late October, matching the pattern at most private parks in the area. Sea Pirate is open from late April to late October, and Baker's Acres runs recreational amenities and organized activities throughout spring, summer, and fall. Winter camping options are extremely limited on the mainland and nonexistent on LBI itself. July and August are peak season. Beaches, causeway traffic, and campground activity schedules are all at their busiest, and popular sites near LBI fill months in advance for holiday weekends. Shoulder season, from mid-May through June and again in September, generally offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though ocean temperatures stay swimmable well into September. Storm risk is a real planning factor. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. From June to November, the area can be affected by hurricanes or their remnants, with the most likely period from August to October. Nor'easters are more common from late fall through early spring and can bring coastal flooding and beach erosion.

Expect a sandy, wooded Pinelands setting at most mainland campgrounds, with pitch pines and oaks providing shade. Sites are generally level, and full or partial hookups are standard at private parks. Interior roads at some parks are dirt or sand, so drive slowly and watch for soft spots. Mosquitoes, greenhead flies, and ticks can be intense from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and screen-room gear. Beach access requires a drive. LBI beaches sell daily and weekly beach badges in season, and parking in Beach Haven can be tight on summer weekends; arriving before mid-morning is the standard workaround. Grocery runs, laundromats, and dump stations are easiest to handle on the mainland side of the causeway. Cell and data coverage along the LBI corridor is generally strong on major carriers, and most private campgrounds offer Wi-Fi of variable quality. Plan on cash or card for beach badges, Garden State Parkway tolls, and any bay-side rentals.
