Campgrounds and RV parks near Bernardsville, NJ

The New Jersey Highlands surrounding Bernardsville are built for outdoor days. Stephens State Park sits along the Musconetcong River, where anglers cast for trout and about six miles of marked trails carry hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders through the woods. Picnic tables and grills line the river at the upper picnic area. Voorhees State Park has eleven multi-use trails covering roughly nine miles, plus the New Jersey Astronomical Association observatory with a 26-inch Newtonian reflector, one of the largest privately owned telescopes in the state. The Solar System Trail begins at the observatory and ends at a scenic overlook of Round Valley Reservoir. At Panther Lake Camping Resort, families can swim in the lake or pool, rent boats, fish, and use the mini golf, pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts. Waterloo Village and Lake Hopatcong are short drives from Fla-Net Park.

The camping season in this part of New Jersey is short and clearly defined. The Voorhees State Park campground is open from April 1 through October 31 for family camping, with a limit of six persons per campsite, and Stephens State Park runs on the same seasonal window, April 1 through October 31. Private parks follow similar patterns: Panther Lake Camping Resort operates from roughly mid-April through late October, and Fla-Net Park is open April 1 through October 15. Late spring and early fall bring the most comfortable temperatures for RV travel, with cool nights and lower humidity. Summer weekends are the busiest window, especially around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, when state-park sites and lakeside resorts fill weeks ahead. Winter closures are the rule. Water systems and dump stations shut down after the season, and most private parks winterize. Day-use hiking and cross-country skiing remain available at Stephens and Voorhees, but overnight RV options in the immediate area effectively disappear until April.

Expect a mix of rustic state-park sites and full-service private RV parks. Stephens State Park has 39 tent and small-trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, a 40-foot maximum trailer length, and flush toilets and showers within walking distance, but no hookups. Voorhees State Park offers 47 tent and trailer sites with a sanitary dump station available to Voorhees campers at Spruce Run Recreation Area; water and 30/50 amp electric hookups are only at select sites at Spruce Run itself. Private parks are more amenity-heavy. Fla-Net Park offers full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, a dump station, pool, and laundry, and Panther Lake Camping Resort adds a sand beach, pool, hot tub, and mini golf. Black bears are found throughout New Jersey. Store food in the RV, secure trash, and expect ticks and mosquitoes at wooded sites.
