Campgrounds and RV parks near Bogota, NJ

From a Jersey City base, most itineraries lean urban: ferries and PATH trains reach Lower Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty in minutes, and Liberty State Park is bike-accessible. For outdoor days, Gateway National Recreation Area offers hiking, biking, birding and historic tours of airports and forts, with Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, home to approximately 300 migratory bird species, adjacent to the campground. Harriman State Park features 31 lakes and multiple streams, and its over 200 miles of trails, maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, are a haven for hikers. Wawayanda State Park offers over 60 miles of marked trails, including a 19.6-mile section of the renowned Appalachian Trail, and Camp Wyanokie borders Norvin Green State Forest with trails leading toward Wyanokie High Point.

Northern New Jersey has a strong four-season climate. Summer is peak camping season and the busiest window at every park within reach of Bogota. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be secured as far in advance as possible, and Wawayanda's group sites also fill quickly on summer weekends. Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking, with foliage color arriving in October. Wawayanda's group campsites are open April 1 to October 31, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field follows a similar April to October pattern. Bear awareness matters at inland parks: Beaver Pond notes bear activity in the area and asks campers to follow bear habitat guidelines and keep sites clean to reduce risk. Winter narrows the options. Liberty Harbor operates year-round, while most state and national park campgrounds close or run reduced services. At an elevation of 1,140 feet above sea level, Wawayanda State Park receives great accumulations of snow in the winter months, with cross-country skiing permitted on designated trails.

Hookups are the exception rather than the rule in this region. Liberty Harbor provides water and electric sites, a dump station, restrooms with hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi within a fenced marina-adjacent lot; expect close spacing and city noise. At Camp Gateway, there is no electricity or water at the sites, RV sites have no water or electric hookups either, but there is a dump station and generators are allowed from 8 AM to 10 PM. Beaver Pond can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft long at select sites, and there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and no pets are permitted. Check specific rules before arrival.
