Campgrounds near Boonton, New Jersey
Boonton sits in Morris County in the New Jersey Highlands, roughly 30 miles west of Manhattan and within a short drive of several state parks, forests, and private RV resorts. The terrain is wooded, hilly, and lake-dotted, with elevations rising from around 400 to more than 1,300 feet in the surrounding highlands. RV renters use Boonton as a base for camping in Morris, Sussex, and Passaic counties without long transit drives.
Options range from full-hookup private resorts to rustic state-forest sites. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover offers RV sites, cabins, and lake recreation on a large family-oriented property. The Great Divide Campground, LLC in Newton provides wooded and open sites with full amenities across roughly 100 acres in rural Sussex County. Fla-Net Park in Flanders is a smaller RV-focused park useful for travelers who want quick access to Interstate 80 corridor amenities.
For more rugged trips, Wawayanda State Park offers group campsites in the Highlands, and Camp Wyanokie sits at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest for hike-in style stays.
Things to do near Boonton
Hiking dominates the area. Norvin Green State Forest offers a network of blazed trails, and the Wyanokie High Point loop delivers views that reach the New York City skyline on clear days. Wawayanda State Park consists of over 60 miles of well-marked trails in addition to a 19.6 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, which is restricted to hiking only.
Water recreation is easy to find. Landlocked salmon were introduced to Wawayanda Lake in 2006, and only a handful of deep lakes in New Jersey have suitable year-round habitat for cold-water fish such as trout and salmon. Panther Lake Camping Resort is nestled in 160 wooded acres featuring a 45 acre lake, with swimming, boating, and fishing on site.
Families staying at The Great Divide Campground, LLC have access to a heated pool, playground, horseshoes, game room, free kayaks, stocked fishing lake, and live music. Winter visitors can cross-country ski, snowshoe, or ice fish inside Wawayanda State Park when conditions allow.

Most campgrounds in the Boonton region operate on a spring-through-fall schedule. Wawayanda State Park camping is open April 1 to October 31. Panther Lake Camping Resort operates April 15 to October 31. The Great Divide Campground is open May 1 to mid-October. Travelers looking for shoulder-season or off-season options should confirm current dates directly with the operator, since private-park schedules can shift year to year.
Summer is peak season. Weekends fill quickly at private resorts, and popular state-park group sites should be booked well ahead. Swimming hours at Wawayanda State Park typically run from late June to early September, marking the primary lake-swimming window.
Autumn brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong foliage across the Highlands. Winter conditions can be sharp: at an elevation of 1,140 feet above sea level, Wawayanda State Park receives great accumulations of snow in the winter months, so RV travel in the higher terrain requires attention to road conditions and freezing temperatures.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campsites near Boonton
State-park sites and private resorts use different systems, and it pays to know both. Online reservations for New Jersey state parks are made at camping.nj.gov, the central portal for Wawayanda and other state sites. Campsites can be booked online up to 11 months in advance, which matters for summer weekends and group sites.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Panther Lake Camping Resort, The Great Divide Campground, LLC, and Fla-Net Park take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Cancellation windows and deposit rules vary, so confirm those terms before paying.
For Camp Wyanokie, access is controlled through the local municipal body that administers the property rather than a public reservation portal, so trip planning there requires direct contact. When traveling with an RV rental, verify site length, hookup type, and rig-size limits at the time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely in the region. Private resorts like Panther Lake Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground, LLC offer water, 30 amp electric and sewer sites or pump outs, pools, laundry, and organized activities. The majority of sites at Panther Lake Camping Resort house seasonal residents, creating a neighborhood atmosphere where permanent RVs and cottages line the roads, which some renters like and others find crowded.
State-park camping is more basic. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Plan for hauled water, battery power, and limited services.
Cell coverage is inconsistent across the Highlands. Cell service proves spotty throughout most of Panther Lake, with reliable coverage limited to areas near the entrance, pool, and pavilion, and similar gaps exist inside Norvin Green and Wawayanda. Download maps and reservations before leaving town.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Boonton, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Boonton, NJ?
Good news: an RV rental in Boonton fits a wide range of budgets, with travel trailers often starting around $70 to $120 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $150 to $250 per night on RVezy. Class A motorhomes and luxury fifth wheels sit at the higher end, while campervans land in between. Because Boonton sits in Morris County just off Interstate 80, you'll find a healthy mix of hosts that compete on price. To score a cheap RV rental in Boonton, book midweek, travel in the shoulder seasons of April or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates before peak summer weekends sell out.
visitnj.org/nj/hotels-lodging/campgrounds-rv-parksDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Boonton, NJ?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Boonton. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational use, even for larger Class A motorhomes, because the state explicitly exempts personal-use RVs from CDL rules. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking platform. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. That's it. You'll be cruising toward the Skylands or down the Jersey Shore on the same license you use every day.
nj.gov/mvc/license/index.htmlWhat protection is included with my Boonton RV rental?
Every RV rental in Boonton booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit Interstate 80 with real peace of mind. During checkout, you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip, from Standard to Premium, with higher tiers offering lower deductibles and added benefits. The plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the policy limits, and roadside support is just a phone call away if you get a flat near the Delaware Water Gap or need help leveling at your campsite. Book your motorhome rental in Boonton with confidence knowing RVezy's support team has your back from pickup to dropoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my RV rental in Boonton?
You're not locked in. RVezy sets a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy on every booking (hosts do not set their own), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can change your mind without penalty. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. The full policy details are shown during checkout and in your confirmation email, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: book your RV rental in Boonton early to lock in the best rig, and you'll still have that grace period to confirm your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Boonton RV rental?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Boonton. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome, often for a small cleaning fee. Boonton is a fantastic dog-friendly base too: Tourne County Park has scenic hiking trails just minutes from town (dogs must be leashed), and Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in nearby Jefferson welcomes leashed pets across its multi-use trail network. Most New Jersey state and county campgrounds allow leashed dogs at RV sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, and pack a tie-out, water bowl, and your dog's vaccination records for campground check-in.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/tourne-county-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Boonton?
Yes, RV delivery in Boonton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through North Jersey traffic. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at your campsite, whether that's Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson, Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover, or a private property nearby. They'll level the RV, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before leaving. Just filter listings by Delivery and check the host's delivery radius and fee, which typically scales with distance. It's the easiest way to camp without ever touching a steering wheel.
morrisparks.net/facilities/mahlon-dickerson-rv-camping-area/How far can I drive on a Boonton RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You've got plenty of road to explore. Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and additional miles available for a small per-mile fee. Some listings even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for longer Boonton RV trips. From Boonton you can reach the Delaware Water Gap in about 50 miles, Cape May on the Jersey Shore in roughly 170 miles, the Catskills in around 100 miles, and Lake George in about 220 miles. Pro tip: estimate your total mileage before booking and message the host if you need a higher allowance, they're often flexible.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038085714-Understanding-mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Boonton, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice within an hour of Boonton. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township is the closest top pick, offering 18 paved RV sites with electric and seasonal water hookups inside a 3,590-acre park, plus a dump station and access to Headley Overlook, one of the highest points in Morris County. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover has full hookups and lake swimming. Triple Brook Camping Resort in Blairstown offers a pool and family activities. Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River is perfect for RV camping in Boonton's backyard wilderness. Pro tip: reserve Mahlon Dickerson early through Morris County Parks, the 44-foot maximum site books out for summer weekends fast.
morrisparks.net/facilities/mahlon-dickerson-rv-camping-area/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Boonton?
Boonton is a four-season destination, and the sweet spot for most renters is May through October, when daytime highs run from a comfortable 69°F in May to 83°F in July, then back to the low 60s in October. Fall is the local insider's pick: late September through mid-October delivers spectacular foliage across Morris County and the Delaware Water Gap, plus fewer crowds and cooler camping nights in the 40s. Summer is peak season with the warmest weather but also the most humidity. Winter RV camping is possible but campgrounds like Mahlon Dickerson Reservation are seasonal (typically open May to September). Pro tip: book a fall foliage weekend by mid-August, those dates go fast.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving it around Boonton?
You've got this, and you're not doing it alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, slide-outs, generator, water, and waste systems so you leave feeling confident. First time renting an RV in Boonton? Choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer, which drive much like a large van or pickup. Boonton sits right off Interstate 287 and Interstate 80, both wide highways perfect for easing into RV driving before you head to the mountains. Avoid narrow downtown Main Street with a big rig, just stick to the main roads. Pro tip: take 15 minutes in an empty parking lot to practice turns and backing before you hit the road.
nj.gov/mvc/license/driver_manuals.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is built in. Every Boonton RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 80, a dead battery at the campground, or a lockout near High Point State Park is one phone call away from getting handled. Your host is also a direct resource for any quirks specific to their rig and is usually quick to respond by message. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Boonton, and snap a photo of the RV's hookup setup at pickup for easy reference later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037837794-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Boonton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Boonton is built for crossing state lines. New York is right next door (the Catskills are about 90 minutes north), Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains are under an hour west, and you can reach Vermont, Maine, or Virginia on a longer loop. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance on the specific RV, so message the host before booking if you're planning a cross-border adventure. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: if you're headed to Canada, ask the host for a written travel authorization letter to make the border crossing smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for an RV trip from Boonton?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable with a little planning. Class C motorhomes from Boonton typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers towed by a truck average 10 to 14 MPG, and campervans can hit 18 to 20 MPG. New Jersey gas prices generally run a bit higher than the national average, but the good news is New Jersey is one of the cheaper neighbors in the Northeast, often 30 to 50 cents per gallon less than New York or Connecticut. Pro tip: fill up before crossing into New York and use apps like GasBuddy to find the best prices along Interstate 80 west toward the Delaware Water Gap.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Boonton?
Lock in your campsite as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. New Jersey state parks like Worthington and Stephens use the camping.nj.gov reservation system and open bookings up to a year in advance, while Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is managed by Morris County Parks through their own online system. For peak weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and fall foliage in October), aim to book three to six months out. Midweek summer stays and shoulder-season trips are often available with just a week or two of lead time. Pro tip: holiday weekends require a two-night minimum at Mahlon Dickerson, so plan around that when picking dates.
njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors/What are driving conditions like around Boonton for an RV?
Boonton is actually one of the easier launch points for RV travel in North Jersey. You're a short hop from Interstate 287 and Interstate 80, both wide multi-lane highways that handle motorhomes and trailers easily. Avoid narrow downtown streets like historic Main Street with a larger Class A, and skip the Garden State Parkway with a tow dolly (state rules require all four wheels of a towed vehicle on the ground on the Parkway and Turnpike). Watch for rush-hour traffic heading east toward New York City on weekday mornings and Sunday evenings. New Jersey caps RV height at 13.5 feet and length at 40 feet on most state roads. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS to dodge low bridges on older county routes.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Boonton?
Local campgrounds are well set up for a comfortable stay. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers paved RV sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric service, seasonal water hookups, picnic tables, fire rings or charcoal grills, restrooms with showers, and an on-site dump station, though it doesn't have sewer at individual sites. Private parks like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Triple Brook Camping Resort go a step further with full hookups, pools, and Wi-Fi. For where to park an RV in Boonton between trips, your host or campground is your best option, since the town prohibits overnight street parking. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter so you're ready for any site.
morrisparks.net/facilities/mahlon-dickerson-rv-camping-area/What's included inside a typical Boonton RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how home-like a motorhome rental in Boonton feels. Most rigs come with comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware), an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and a furnace, and seatbelts at designated travel seats. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid power, with Wi-Fi available on some listings. Add-ons like linens, camp chairs, and kitchen kits are common and reasonably priced. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you need something specific like a child car seat anchor or a coffee maker, most are happy to accommodate.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a campervan rental in Boonton?
A campervan rental in Boonton is highly customizable. Hosts typically offer popular add-ons like bedding and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, bike racks, generators, and portable grills, with prices set by each host. Many also offer delivery, propane refills, and post-trip cleaning so you can skip the dump-station stop. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Boonton, and you'll do a 30 to 45 minute walkthrough before leaving. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited miles and others a per-night allowance. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator and dump-out add-on for a totally hands-off experience, you'll never touch a sewer hose or fill a water tank yourself.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038085514-Understanding-add-onsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Boonton, you pay through RVezy with a credit card, no cash or wire transfers needed. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card before pickup (the amount varies by RV and is clearly shown at checkout), and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and with a full fuel tank. To avoid deductions, take photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and cleaning instructions, and report anything unusual right away. Pro tip: keep your gas receipt from the last fill-up, it's the easiest proof that you returned the rig topped off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I prep an RV for cold-weather camping near Boonton?
Shoulder-season and early winter RV trips from Boonton are absolutely doable with a little prep, and the rewards (empty trails, fall foliage, snow-dusted Skylands) are huge. Look for listings with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace, all common on Class C motorhomes in this region. Plan to camp at parks with shore power so you can run the furnace freely, and bring an insulated water hose to prevent freezing once temperatures drop into the 20s. Many Morris County campgrounds close water hookups by late fall, so fill your fresh tank before arrival. Pro tip: ask your host for cold-weather tips during the orientation, they know exactly how their specific RV handles a chilly North Jersey night.
