Camping near Branchville, New Jersey
Branchville sits in Sussex County in the Kittatinny Mountains of northwestern New Jersey, within easy reach of some of the state's largest tracts of public land. The area is a practical base for RV renters aiming to access Stokes State Forest, Swartswood State Park, High Point State Park, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, all reachable in under an hour.
Campground options range from full-hookup private resorts to primitive state-forest sites. Kymers Camping Resort offers family amenities and RV-oriented sites in Branchville. Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest is the more rustic option nearby, with tent-oriented sites in a wooded creek setting. Swartswood State Park sits a short drive south on New Jersey's first state-park land and offers lakefront family camping.
Across the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, Dingmans Campground provides riverside and forest sites inside the national recreation area. The Great Divide Campground, LLC, near Newton, rounds out the mix with a large private resort setup for longer family stays.
Things to do around Branchville
The region is built for hiking, paddling, and freshwater recreation. The Appalachian Trail runs along Kittatinny Ridge through Stokes State Forest and High Point State Park, with day-hike access to Sunrise Mountain and Tillman Ravine. Swartswood Lake, a 519-acre glacial lake restricted to electric motors, is popular for kayaking, canoeing, sailing, swimming, and fishing.
Inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the 32-mile McDade Trail passes the entrance to Dingmans Campground, and the Delaware River offers 40 miles of paddling and boat-launch access. Waterfalls, including those near Dingmans Ferry, are within a short drive.

Swartswood State Park's campsites are open April 1 through October 31, and Dingmans Campground inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area runs a seasonal calendar from roughly mid-April through mid-October. Kymers Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground, LLC both operate as spring-through-fall private resorts, typically opening in April or May and closing by mid to late October.
Stokes State Forest operates campgrounds year-round through the state reservation system, but several interior roads, including Sunrise Mountain Road, Crigger Road, Grau Road, and Struble Road, close from December 15 through April 15 or during hazardous weather. Winter access is limited to plowed routes.
Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, especially at riverfront sites and lakefront loops. Reservations booked well in advance are advised for July and August. Shoulder-season visits in late spring and early fall bring thinner crowds and cooler nights, with fall foliage peaking through October in the higher elevations.

Absolutely amazing renter. The RV had everything we needed and they were very accommodating with our extension.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Branchville
New Jersey state-park and state-forest sites, including Stokes State Forest and Swartswood State Park, are reserved online through the state camping portal at camping.nj.gov. Reservations can be filtered by campground area, site type, occupancy, and trailer length. For Stokes State Forest, campers select a specific area, such as Steam Mill (listed here as Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest), Lake Ocquittunk, or Shotwell, before choosing a site.
Dingmans Campground, operated as a concession inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, takes reservations directly through its own booking system and by phone rather than Recreation.gov. Private resorts like Kymers Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground, LLC accept reservations directly through their websites or offices, with popular holiday weekends often booked months in advance.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of forested, ridge, and lakefront terrain. Sites at Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest are primitive, with a pit toilet, a well, and rocky ground that can make leveling a small trailer or campervan tricky; the area is tent-oriented with only 27 sites and does not accommodate large RVs. Swartswood State Park provides drinking water, flush toilets, and showers, with loops within walking distance of the lake.
Dingmans Campground has drive-in RV sites with water and electric hookups, walk-in river tent sites, central dump stations, and an on-site general store. Kymers Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground, LLC provide full-hookup RV sites, laundry, camp stores, and pools.
Black bears are active in this region. Store food in hard-sided vehicles or bear-resistant containers, and check current park alerts for river levels before paddling.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Branchville, NJ
What does an RV rental in Branchville, NJ typically cost, and how can I save?
Good news: an RV rental in Branchville, NJ is one of the more affordable ways to enjoy the Kittatinny Mountains. Travel trailers on RVezy typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $300, and luxury Class A rigs sit higher. Pricing peaks during summer weekends and fall foliage season (late September through mid October), when Stokes State Forest and High Point fill fast. To find a cheap RV rental in Branchville, aim for midweek pickups, book 4 to 6 weeks ahead, and consider a travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips in late May or early June offer mild 70°F days and noticeably lower nightly rates.
visitnj.org/nj-all-beaches/stokes-state-forestWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Branchville, NJ?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Branchville. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, even larger Class A rigs, as long as you're driving for recreation. On RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID verification is handled right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. That's it, no DMV trips, no extra paperwork, just pick up your rig near Branchville and head north toward Sunrise Mountain.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/motorhomes.htmIs my trip protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely, peace of mind is built into every RV rental in Branchville. Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan that covers damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance no matter where your New Jersey RV trip takes you, from Tillman Ravine to the Delaware Water Gap. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your comfort, so you decide how much coverage you want (hosts don't set this). It's not traditional auto insurance, but it provides serious financial backup if a tree branch dings the awning at Shotwell Campground or you get a flat on Route 206. Book confidently, then focus on the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Branchville RV booking?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room if your plans shift. Refund amounts after that depend on how close you are to your trip start date, which matters in Sussex County where snow can linger into March. If a host has to cancel on their end, RVezy's support team helps you rebook another rig in the Branchville area or provides a refund or credit. Translation: you can lock in a great motorhome rental in Branchville today without feeling stuck.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Branchville RV trip?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental options in Branchville are plentiful on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Once you're here, dogs are welcome on a leash at Stokes State Forest, and family campsites are designated as the pet-friendly camping area inside the forest, so reserve those early. High Point State Park also has many pet-friendly sites, though Sawmill Lake's tent area has restrictions, so check the listing on camping.nj.gov before you book. Insider tip: Tillman Ravine's shaded trails and the Big Flatbrook are perfect for water-loving pups on a hot July afternoon.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stokes-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Branchville?
Yes, and it's the smartest move for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Branchville and surrounding Sussex County, dropping the rig right at your site at Stokes State Forest, Harmony Ridge Campground, or Kymer's Camping Resort, leveling it, hooking it up, and walking you through every system. That means no towing nerves on Route 206's winding stretches and no awkward backing into a tight Shotwell loop. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campground name to confirm fees and distance. Pro tip: delivery to Stokes (about 4 miles north of Branchville on US 206) is usually quick and affordable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive, and are unlimited-mileage rentals available?
You've got real range from Branchville. Each host sets their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles around $0.35 to $0.45 each), and some list an RV rental with unlimited mileage, look for that note on the listing or message hosts directly. From Branchville you can reach Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in about 30 minutes, New York City in about 1 hour 45 minutes, the Catskills in roughly 2 hours, the Pocono Mountains in about 1 hour, and the Jersey Shore in around 2.5 hours. Pro tip: for a Branchville RV trip with lots of driving, prioritize listings with higher mileage caps.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Branchville, NJ?
You're in one of New Jersey's best camping zones. Top picks for RV camping near Branchville include Stokes State Forest (Shotwell, Ocquittunk, and Steam Mill areas, about 4 miles north on US 206), High Point State Park along Sawmill Lake (seasonal, smaller rigs only), Harmony Ridge Campground (full-hookup family resort a few miles away), Kymer's Camping Resort (pools, planned activities, big-rig friendly), and Pleasant Acres Farm just down the road for a working-farm experience. Insider tip: Stokes' Shotwell loop offers sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water, ideal for a classic New Jersey RV rental weekend.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stokes-state-forest/When is the best time to visit Branchville for an RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Branchville, with the absolute peak being late September to mid-October when the Kittatinny Ridge bursts into red and gold. Summer highs sit around 80 to 82F in July (cooler than down-state NJ thanks to the 700 to 1,800 foot elevation), nights drop to a comfortable 60F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common, so plan hikes for mornings. Spring brings trout-stocking season on the Big Flatbrook, while winter (December to March) dips into the 20s F with snow. Insider tip: book early October weekends 2 to 3 months out, fall foliage at High Point Monument is a tough ticket.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.1467&lon=-74.7496Can I rent an RV in Branchville in winter?
Yes, winter rentals are absolutely possible, and the Kittatinny region in snow is gorgeous. Stokes State Forest keeps some camping areas open year-round, and the forest is a hub for cross-country skiing and ice fishing, so a winter RV rental in Sussex County is a real adventure. Look for listings with four-season insulation, heated holding tanks, and a working furnace, and ask the host directly about cold-weather prep (skirting, heated water hose, propane levels). January lows average around 20F. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery so you can plug into shore power at a winter-open site without learning cold-weather setup on the fly.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stokes-state-forest/I've never driven an RV before. Is Branchville a good place to start?
Honestly, yes. If it's your first time renting an RV, Sussex County is forgiving: rural two-lane roads, low traffic outside of summer Saturdays, and short driving distances between attractions. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump procedures, so you don't have to YouTube anything. Choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Branchville (under 25 feet) for easy maneuvering on Route 206 and inside Stokes' camp loops. Pro tip: pick delivery for your first trip so the host levels and hooks up the rig, you just unlock the door and start your weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 206, a dead battery at Shotwell Campground, or a tow need on I-80 toward the Delaware Water Gap is one phone call away. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is just a message away in the app for quick questions like resetting the inverter or restarting the fridge. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and roadside number before you pull out of the driveway, makes any call faster if you need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Branchville?
You're perfectly positioned for an RV road trip from Branchville. Top routes: (1) Delaware Water Gap loop, about 30 minutes south on US 206 with riverside camping at Worthington State Forest. (2) Catskills run, about 2 hours north into New York for waterfalls and craft breweries. (3) Pocono Mountains, roughly 1 hour west across the Delaware for lakes and resorts. (4) Finger Lakes wine country, about 4.5 hours north. (5) Acadia and coastal Maine, a 9 to 10 hour bucket-list trip up I-87 and I-95. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed (confirm with your host); travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals. Local tip: avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and the GWB lower level with propane onboard.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyHow much should I budget for fuel on a Branchville RV trip?
Easier to plan than you'd think. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, with diesel pushers slightly better. New Jersey gas prices typically run a bit above the national average (and remember: NJ is a full-service state, attendants pump for you, which is a relief in a big rig). For a 3-day, 250-mile Branchville loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Branchville or Newton before heading deep into Stokes, the next stations along US 206 are sparse and pricier.
nj.gov/mvc/How far ahead should I book a campground near Branchville?
Earlier than you'd guess for this part of NJ. New Jersey state park sites at Stokes State Forest and High Point State Park book through camping.nj.gov, and the booking window opens months in advance, summer weekends and October foliage dates often sell out quickly. Aim to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for peak weekends, and 2 to 4 weeks for weekdays or shoulder season. Same-day reservations may be possible if a site is open. Pro tip: set an availability notification on camping.nj.gov for Stokes' Shotwell loop, cancellations pop up regularly and a few are gold.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Branchville?
Manageable and scenic. Branchville sits in rural Sussex County where US 206 is the main artery, two lanes, gentle curves through forest and farmland, generally low traffic. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Sussex County has one of the highest deer populations in NJ), narrow shoulders on county roads near Stokes State Forest, and steeper grades climbing toward High Point Monument at 1,803 feet. New Jersey caps most RVs at 102 inches wide and 13.5 feet tall on state roads, and the Garden State Parkway restricts certain commercial vehicles. Pro tip: avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels with onboard propane, it's prohibited.
nj.gov/mvc/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Branchville?
Mostly rustic-meets-comfortable. Stokes State Forest sites include picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water, and pit or vault toilets, with sanitary dump stations on-site but a short drive from individual sites. Steam Mill and Ocquittunk loops have RV length limits, while Shotwell handles slightly larger trailers. For full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer, WiFi), book Harmony Ridge or Kymer's Camping Resort, both within a few miles of Branchville. Pro tip: for where to park an RV in Branchville with hot showers, head to Pleasant Acres Farm Campground, with full amenities and family-friendly perks like a pool and mini-golf.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stokes-state-forest/What's inside the RVs I can rent in Branchville?
More than you'd expect, even at the budget end. Most RVezy rentals around Branchville include a queen or king bed plus convertible dinettes (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an interior bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Kittatinny nights, and seatbelts for travel days. Many include a generator for off-grid stays at Stokes, plus outdoor speakers, awnings, and camp chairs. WiFi and TVs vary by listing, look in the amenities section. Family RV trip tip: filter by sleeping capacity and amenities on RVezy to match your group's needs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RVezy rental?
Plenty, and it's how you customize your trip. Common add-ons from Branchville-area hosts include camping kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding and linens ($10 to $20 per person), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Delivery and setup is the highest-value add-on, especially to Stokes' Shotwell loop or High Point's Sawmill area. Pickup is usually from the host's driveway in or around Branchville, Newton, or Sussex, and most hosts offer a walkthrough at pickup. Pro tip: ask about a dump-and-clean add-on at return, it removes the one chore most first-timers dread.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Branchville%2C%20New%20JerseyHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and transparent. You pay through RVezy's secure platform when you book, never directly to the host, so your money is protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. Choosing a higher protection-plan tier during checkout can lower your out-of-pocket exposure if something happens. To avoid hold-ups, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if that's in your agreement. Pro tip: most Branchville hosts release deposits within a few days of a smooth return.
