Campgrounds and RV parks near Browns Mills, NJ

The Pine Barrens define outdoor recreation in this corner of New Jersey. Paddlers launch canoes and kayaks on the tea-colored Wading, Mullica, and Batsto rivers, where tannins from cedar and pine give the water its distinctive dark color. The Batona Trail, roughly 50 miles long, crosses Brendan T Byrne State Forest and continues into Wharton State Forest, linking multiple trailheads for day hikes and long-distance walks. Historic Batsto Village anchors Wharton State Forest with a preserved 19th-century bog iron and glassmaking settlement. Whitesbog Village, within Brendan T Byrne State Forest, is where the first cultivated highbush blueberry was developed. Nearby ponds support fishing and small-boat use. For rainy days, families head to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson or the beaches at Long Beach Island, each within an hour or so of Browns Mills.

The primary camping season in the Pine Barrens runs from spring through fall. Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge is open from May 1 to Oct 31, which is typical for the primitive state forest campgrounds in the region. Brendan T Byrne State Forest keeps its family campsites open year round, though some services are reduced in winter. Private resorts like Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground and Timberland Lake Campground generally operate on a longer seasonal schedule, though hookup availability can vary in shoulder months. Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day book out weeks in advance, especially at waterfront and pool-equipped campgrounds. Insects, including mosquitoes and ticks, are most active from late spring through early fall, so bug protection is essential. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and reliable paddling conditions on the rivers. Winter camping is limited to Byrne and a handful of private parks that stay open with reduced services. Fire restrictions may apply during dry stretches in spring and summer.

Expect a mix of primitive and full-service camping. State forest sites are rustic: tent and trailer sites with fire rings, picnic tables, and lantern hooks. Brendan T Byrne has flush toilets, showers, and a dump station within the campground loop. Hawkins Bridge has potable water and pit toilets within walking distance. RV renters staying at state sites should plan for no hookups, limited turning room, and length restrictions on trailers and motorhomes. Private resorts near Browns Mills typically provide water, electric, and sewer hookups, plus pools, playgrounds, camp stores, and Wi-Fi that varies by location. Cell service in deeper Pine Barrens areas can be spotty. Terrain is flat and sandy, and sites are shaded by pitch pine and oak. Pack layers for cool nights, sturdy footwear for sandy trails, and drinking water for remote day trips.
