RV camping near Budd Lake, New Jersey
Budd Lake sits in Mount Olive Township in Morris County, in the New Jersey Highlands about 50 miles west of New York City. The area works well as an RV base: it puts campers within a short drive of Musconetcong River trout water, the Highlands Trail, and Sussex County's rural lake country.
Campground options range from a small state-park tent and small-trailer loop to full-service private resorts with hookups. Stephens State Park Campground, off Willow Grove Street in Hackettstown, has 39 tent and small-trailer sites, is open seasonally April 1 through October 31, sits at 623 feet elevation, and accommodates rigs up to 40 feet. Larger rigs and families looking for hookups and amenities usually head to Panther Lake Camping Resort or The Great Divide Campground, both within roughly a half hour of Budd Lake. Fla-Net Park and Goodland Country Club and Spa round out the nearby options.
Most campgrounds in the area operate on a warm-season schedule, so trip planning tightens quickly between Memorial Day and Columbus Day weekends.
Things to do around Budd Lake
Fishing is a headline draw. The Musconetcong River runs through Stephens State Park and is stocked with trout by NJ Fish and Wildlife each spring. Hikers have direct access to the Highlands Trail network, which passes through Stephens State Park on its route across northern New Jersey. Six miles of marked trails inside the park itself are open to walking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
Winter day use includes cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the park's groomed trails, even though the campground itself closes. For families wanting on-site recreation, Panther Lake Camping Resort offers a sand beach, swimming pool, pickleball and tennis courts, mini golf, an arcade, boat rentals, and a 45-acre lake. The Great Divide Campground adds a heated pool, stocked fishing lake, and live-music weekends.

The camping season in this part of northwestern New Jersey is tightly seasonal. Stephens State Park campsites are open April 1 through October 31. Panther Lake Camping Resort runs April 15 through October 31. The Great Divide Campground opens May 1 and closes in mid-October.
Spring brings stocked-trout action and cool nights, though sites can still be damp. Summer is peak family season: pools, lakes, and organized activities are in full swing at the private resorts, and weekends at Panther Lake and Great Divide fill weeks in advance around Independence Day and Labor Day. Swimming pools and the beach at Panther Lake operate Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Fall delivers foliage color through the Highlands and quieter weekdays before the October 31 closing dates. Winter closes the campgrounds, but Stephens State Park stays open for day use, with groomed trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Budd Lake
New Jersey state park campsites use a single online system. Online reservations for Stephens State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in New Jersey state parks, and campers bringing pets must show an updated vaccination certificate on arrival.
Private resorts book direct. Panther Lake Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground both take reservations through their own websites and by phone, and both hold a large share of sites for seasonal residents, so short-stay inventory is limited. Panther Lake requires a two-night minimum on special-event and October weekends and a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends. Weekend nights around holidays should be locked in as soon as the calendar opens.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in this part of the Highlands is wooded and rolling, with lake and river frontage. Cell service is inconsistent at the private resorts. At Panther Lake, coverage is spotty across most of the property, with reliable signal limited to areas near the entrance, pool, and pavilion, and Wi-Fi requires walking to specific zones.
Site mix varies. The majority of sites at Panther Lake Camping Resort house seasonal residents, creating a neighborhood feel where permanent RVs and cottages line the roads. State-park sites at Stephens are simpler: fire ring, picnic table, and a shared bathhouse with flush toilets and showers, with limited maneuvering room for larger rigs.
Black bears are found throughout New Jersey; do not approach or attract them, and never leave food unsecured. Ticks are present in the woods, so plan on repellent and daily checks.

Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $275, and Class B campervans land somewhere in between. For a cheap RV rental in Budd Lake, weekday pickups in May or September often shave 15 to 25 percent off peak summer pricing. You can also save by booking hosts who offer unlimited mileage if you plan a longer loop through the Delaware Water Gap or Poconos. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Budd%20Lake%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Budd Lake, New Jersey?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Budd Lake. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement to operate a personal-use motorhome, even larger Class A rigs, when driving recreationally. To book through RVezy, you need to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver's license, and the platform handles ID verification during checkout. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Once that is sorted, you are cleared to hit Route 80 and start your New Jersey RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV rental in Budd Lake covered by insurance and roadside assistance?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book an RV rental in Budd Lake through RVezy. Every booking includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered if you get a flat on Route 46 or need help leveling at a campsite near Lake Hopatcong. The protection plan covers most damages to the RV, and during checkout you select the coverage level that matches your comfort, not the host. Roadside assistance handles tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing when needed. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before booking so your first NJ motorhome adventure starts stress-free.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Budd Lake RV rental?
Life happens, and RVezy is built to handle it. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy, not individual hosts, and the refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You can review the full cancellation terms during checkout and in your RVezy dashboard before confirming the booking. If a host cancels on you, RVezy provides a full refund or rebooking support so your trip is not left in limbo. Pro tip: book early to lock in availability for popular Morris County summer weekends, and you can always adjust later within the cancellation policy window.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Budd Lake?
Absolutely, Budd Lake is a great launchpad for a dog-friendly road trip. Many RVezy hosts in Morris County mark their listings as pet-friendly, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search to see RVs that welcome your four-legged co-pilot. Nearby, Allamuchy Mountain State Park and Stephens State Park both allow leashed dogs on trails, and the Patriots' Path system runs right through Mount Olive Township with miles of paw-friendly walking. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly listed on the booking page. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pet's size and breed, and ask about their favorite local off-leash spots.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/allamuchy-mountain-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Budd Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Budd Lake is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many local RVezy hosts will drive the RV to a campground like Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover, Stephens State Park in Hackettstown, or even your driveway in Mount Olive Township, then set up the trailer, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location and are shown right on the listing. This is the ultimate stress-free option for first-timers, families, or anyone who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig on Route 80. Pro tip: filter by Delivery when searching and message the host with your campsite address for a quick quote.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/How far can I drive on an RV rental from Budd Lake?
Pretty far, and Budd Lake's location at the crossroads of Route 80 and Route 46 makes it a fantastic basecamp. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles) with the option to buy more, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer routes. From Budd Lake, you're about 35 miles to the Delaware Water Gap, 50 miles to midtown Manhattan, 75 miles to the Jersey Shore at Asbury Park, 90 miles to the Pocono Mountains, and around 130 miles to Philadelphia. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Budd Lake, filter for listings advertising unlimited miles to save big on the per-mile overage fees.
state.nj.us/transportation/Where are the best campgrounds near Budd Lake to park my RV?
You've got terrific options within a short drive of Budd Lake. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (about 15 miles north) is a 160-acre resort with a 45-acre lake, full hookups, and a pool. Fla-Net Park Campgrounds offers 90 full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service plus Wi-Fi. Stephens State Park in Hackettstown (about 12 miles west) has 39 riverside sites along the Musconetcong River for smaller rigs, open April 1 through October 31 at $20 per night for residents. Jenny Jump State Forest near Hope offers wooded sites with mountain views. Pro tip: book state park sites at camping.nj.gov as early as January for peak summer weekends, they fill up fast.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Budd Lake?
Late April through mid-October is prime season for RV camping in Budd Lake, with the absolute sweet spots being May to early June and September to mid-October. Summer highs typically run 80 to 88 degrees with humidity, while spring and fall bring 60 to 75 degree days and cool, crisp nights perfect for campfires. October is magical here because the Skylands region explodes with fall foliage, especially around Allamuchy and Jenny Jump. Most New Jersey state park campgrounds open April 1 and close October 31, which mirrors the comfortable RV season. Pro tip: book a fall weekend mid-week to dodge crowds at the Delaware Water Gap and snag better RVezy pricing during shoulder season.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. What's it like picking one up in Budd Lake?
First time renting an RV? You're going to be fine, RVezy is built for beginners. At pickup, your host walks you through every system in person: how to start the generator, dump the tanks, run the awning, hook up to shore power, and use the propane stove. Most orientations take 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts in the Budd Lake area are used to walking new renters through nervous moments. You can also message your host before the trip with any questions. Pro tip: ask your host for their favorite nearby fill-up station and dump point, and request delivery to a quiet campground like Stephens State Park for your first night so you can settle in without highway driving.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/What happens if something goes wrong with my RV on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you get a flat on Route 206, run out of propane near High Point State Park, or need a tow off the shoulder of I-80, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also reachable by message for quick troubleshooting questions like a finicky water pump or a stuck slide-out, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: snap photos of your RV's systems during the walkthrough and save the roadside assistance number to your phone, so you are ready to roll the moment something needs attention.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Budd Lake RV rental into New York or Pennsylvania?
Yes, crossing into New York or Pennsylvania is one of the best parts of an RV rental in Budd Lake, since you sit roughly 45 minutes from both state lines. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States and Canada, and your protection plan travels with you. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there, but you can absolutely cruise the Delaware Water Gap, head north to the Catskills, or set up at a campground in the Poconos. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm your route, especially for longer trips, so any extended mileage can be discussed up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Budd Lake RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any motorhome rental in Budd Lake, but it's manageable with a little planning. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. New Jersey gas prices typically sit slightly below the national average, and (bonus) all stations are full-service by law, so you'll never pump your own gas in-state. For a weekend trip to the Delaware Water Gap (roughly 70 miles round trip), budget $40 to $80 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up just over the Pennsylvania border on longer trips, where diesel and gas often run a few cents cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Budd Lake?
For peak summer weekends and fall foliage season, book your campground as soon as you lock in your RV. New Jersey state parks like Stephens, Allamuchy, and Worthington open reservations up to 12 months in advance through camping.nj.gov, and prime sites at popular parks vanish within hours of opening. Private resorts like Panther Lake and Fla-Net Park typically accept bookings online year-round. For a spontaneous weekend, midweek bookings at private campgrounds are usually doable even a few days out. Pro tip: if a state park shows sold out, set up an availability alert on the camping.nj.gov portal, cancellations pop up surprisingly often the week before a holiday weekend.
njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoorsWhat are driving conditions like around Budd Lake for a larger RV?
Driving an RV around Budd Lake is very manageable, with Route 80 and Route 46 providing wide, straightforward access east toward Manhattan and west toward the Delaware Water Gap. New Jersey caps RV width at 96 inches, length at 40 feet (62 feet combined with a tow), and height at 13.5 feet, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. The Garden State Parkway prohibits trucks and some larger commercial vehicles, but personal RVs are fine south of Exit 105. Avoid narrow back roads through Hackettstown's historic district if you're in a Class A. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app to dodge low bridges on parkways and the famously low 11-foot 8-inch clearances near NYC.

New Jersey state parks like Stephens State Park have flush toilets, hot showers, fire rings, and potable water spigots but no individual hookups, perfect for self-contained rigs. Dump stations are available at Fla-Net RV Park, Panther Lake Camping Resort, and Columbia Valley Campground. Pro tip: confirm your RV's freshwater tank is full and grey/black tanks are empty before leaving the host, especially if you're heading to a no-hookup state park site.

You pay the rental cost (plus any add-ons, taxes, and fees) through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, so there is no awkward cash exchange with your host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after the trip assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, complete the pre-trip and post-trip walkthrough photos with your host, return with a full fuel tank, and empty the waste tanks. Pro tip: snap extra photos of any pre-existing scratches or wear at pickup, so there is zero ambiguity at drop-off.

You're spoiled for choice with an RV road trip from Budd Lake. A favorite first-timer loop: head 35 miles west on Route 80 to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for two nights of hiking and kayaking, then drop south to Worthington State Forest for riverside camping along the Delaware. Add a third night at Jenny Jump State Forest (about 25 miles from Budd Lake) for stargazing at the UACNJ Observatory, open free to the public every Saturday from April through October. Want more adventure? Continue 50 miles west into the Pocono Mountains for Lake Wallenpaupack. Pro tip: this loop keeps you off congested highways and showcases the best of New Jersey's Skylands region, all within 90 minutes of pickup.
