Camping near Burleigh, New Jersey
Burleigh is a small unincorporated community in Middle Township, Cape May County, on the mainland side of the Jersey Cape between Cape May Court House and the Wildwood barrier islands. It sits just off Route 9 and Garden State Parkway exit 11, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers heading to the beaches, boardwalks, and back-bay marshes of southern New Jersey.
The surrounding area is dense with private campgrounds serving the Wildwoods and Cape May. Options close to Burleigh include Shellbay Campgrounds, Adventure Bound Cape May, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Cape May, Acorn Campground, and King Nummy Trail Campground.
Public camping is available inland at Belleplain State Forest, roughly a half-hour drive northwest. Belleplain sits within 21,000 acres of pine, oak, and Atlantic white cedar forest in southern New Jersey's Cape May County, part of the Pinelands National Reserve. Between private resorts near the shore and a large state forest a short drive away, RV travelers have a wide range of hookup levels, site sizes, and amenities to choose from.
Things to do near Burleigh
The signature family stop is minutes away. The Cape May County Park and Zoo sits just off the Garden State Parkway at exit 11 in Cape May Court House, offers free admission, and is open every day of the year except Christmas, featuring more than 550 animals representing over 250 species across 85 acres of exhibits. The Tree to Tree Aerial Adventure Park, an aerial rope course, operates on the same park grounds.
Beaches and boardwalks at Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Cape May are a short drive east and south. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry runs across Delaware Bay for day trips, and the Cape May Lighthouse and Cape May Point State Park anchor the southern tip of the peninsula.
For quieter days, Belleplain State Forest offers habitats ranging from saltwater marsh to Atlantic white cedar swamp and oak-hickory forest, with more than forty miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The forest is well known for its spring bird migration.

Summer is peak season on the Jersey Cape. Private resorts fill weekends solid from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the beach towns run at capacity. Sites fill quickly, especially for summer weekends, and popular parks can be hard to book without planning ahead. Reserve several weeks or months in advance for July and August, and expect the busiest traffic on Fridays and Sundays.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with easier reservations, cooler nights, and strong wildlife viewing. Spring is prime for warblers and other songbirds at Belleplain, and fall brings the Cape May hawk migration along with milder beach days. Many private campgrounds run roughly mid-April through October, so confirm opening and closing dates before locking in a trip.
Winter is quiet. At Belleplain State Forest, the North Shore campground is seasonal and closes November 1 through March 31, while Meisle Field and CCC areas remain open year-round. Most private RV parks in Cape May County close for the off-season, so options narrow significantly from November into March.
How to book campgrounds near Burleigh
Private campgrounds around Burleigh, including Shellbay Campgrounds, Adventure Bound Cape May, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Cape May, Acorn Campground, and King Nummy Trail Campground, are booked directly through each park's website or phone line. Weekly stays, holiday weekends, and full-hookup pull-throughs sell out earliest, so lock in dates as soon as trip plans are firm.
For state-run camping at Belleplain, reservations are handled through the New Jersey State Park Service reservation system. The forest has 169 tent and trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, flush toilets, showers, and laundry within walking distance of all sites, and water and electric hookups available only in the CCC campground.
When requesting a site, confirm RV length limits, hookup type such as 30 or 50 amp, and whether the loop is paved. Ask about pet fees, since Belleplain charges an additional nightly fee for its pet-friendly loops at Meisle Field and CCC.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of large family-oriented RV resorts and smaller wooded parks. Many local campgrounds emphasize pools, playgrounds, and organized activities, and a significant share of sites are held by seasonal campers who park their RV for the summer. That pattern is common across the Jersey Cape, where families use on-site RVs as a summer second home from spring through fall.
Sites tend to be closer together than at inland state parks, and tree cover varies. Cell service and Wi-Fi can be inconsistent in wooded areas, and mosquitoes and ticks are active from spring through fall, so pack repellent.
There are no campgrounds directly on the beach, so plan on a short drive or bike ride from your site to the sand. Bring bikes if possible, since many towns and parks have paved paths that make short trips easier than repositioning the RV.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Burleigh, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Burleigh, NJ?
An RV rental in Burleigh is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy the Jersey Shore. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $180 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $295 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes from $300 and up. Because Burleigh sits in the heart of Cape May County's summer corridor, the smartest savings move is booking shoulder season in late May or September, when Wildwood and Cape May are still beautiful but rates often drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book and travel Sunday through Thursday to score the best deals on a cheap RV rental in Burleigh.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burleigh,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Burleigh, New Jersey?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Burleigh. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Pack your license, confirm your booking, and you're cleared to roll down Route 9 toward the shore.

You're covered from the moment you pick up the keys. Every RV rental in Burleigh booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're never navigating a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway alone. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the vehicle during your trip for added financial peace of mind. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, not the host, so you can dial up extra coverage for a family RV trip to Burleigh or keep it simple for a quick weekend at the shore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Burleigh RV trip changes?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the individual host), so you get consistent, predictable rules no matter which RV you choose in Burleigh. There is a money-back grace period after booking, with additional flexibility depending on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels, you are refunded or offered credits per RVezy's policy. If plans shift, open your RVezy dashboard and the support team can walk you through your options. Book the rig you love now and stay flexible later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Burleigh?
Four-legged co-pilots are welcome. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Burleigh, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Once you're here, your pup will be in heaven: Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area in Cape May allows leashed dogs outside of peak shorebird season, Cape May Point State Park has pet-friendly trails outside the dunes and beach, and the Cape May County Park & Zoo offers walking paths where leashed dogs are welcome. Several local campgrounds, including Seashore Campsites and Big Timber Lake, accommodate pets in designated areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed notes.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/capemaypoint.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Burleigh?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. RV delivery in Burleigh is widely available on RVezy: filter for Delivery and you'll find owners who will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at places like Seashore Campsites in Cape May, Holly Shores in Cape May, or North Wildwood Camping Resort, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot rig into a tight site on your first trip. Many hosts deliver within a 30 to 50 mile radius of Burleigh, and some include short-distance delivery free with multi-night bookings.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106594-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Burleigh?
You're in one of the best basecamps on the East Coast. From Burleigh, Atlantic City is about 40 miles north (around an hour up the Garden State Parkway), Philadelphia is roughly 90 miles west, the Pine Barrens of Wharton State Forest sit about 45 miles inland, Ocean City Maryland is about 130 miles south via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and New York City is roughly 160 miles north. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day) with reasonable per-mile rates after that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. A great RV road trip from Burleigh: shore-hop down to Cape May, ferry to Delaware, then loop back through the Pine Barrens.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burleigh,%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Burleigh, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice. Within 15 minutes of Burleigh you'll find Seashore Campsites & RV Resort in Cape May (full hookups, pool, shuttle to the beach), Holly Shores Camping Resort (family-friendly, close to Cape May attractions), Beachcomber Camping Resort in Cape May (full-service sites and a private lake), Big Timber Lake RV Camping Resort in Cape May Court House (just minutes from Burleigh, with mini-golf and a sandy lake beach), and North Wildwood Camping Resort up the road. For state-park camping, Belleplain State Forest is about 25 minutes inland with shaded, wooded sites. Pro tip: these fill up fast for July and August, so book your campground the same week you book your RV.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belleplain.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Burleigh?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Burleigh, with peak weather running mid-June through August when daytime highs sit in the low to mid-80s F and ocean temperatures climb into the low to mid-70s F. The local insider move is to visit in September: kids are back in school, crowds thin out, and the Atlantic stays warm into early fall while rates drop noticeably. Spring (April to May) is excellent for birding at Cape May Point, one of North America's top migration spots. Winters here are mild (typically 30s to 40s F) but most private campgrounds close from late October to April, so shoulder season is the sweet spot.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Burleigh beginner-friendly?
You've picked a great place to start. First time renting an RV? Burleigh sits on a flat, straight stretch of Cape May County with wide roads (Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway) and no mountain driving, so you're not learning on hairpin turns. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering slide-outs, propane, water, generator, and more, and you can message them anytime during your trip. If you want to skip driving entirely, book delivery and the rig will be set up and waiting at your campsite. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet; they handle a lot like a large van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002193094-RentersWhat happens if I break down during my Burleigh RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on the Parkway, a dead battery at Seashore Campsites, or a lockout in a parking lot, one call gets help dispatched. You can also message your host directly through the app: they know their rig better than anyone and can usually troubleshoot small issues (like a tripped breaker or a finicky slide-out) in minutes. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane and breaker panels during your walkthrough for quick reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106154-Roadside-assistanceWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward. Most Class C motorhomes you'll rent in Burleigh average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) on gas, travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but typically drop your tow vehicle to 10 to 14 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often hit 16 to 20 MPG. A useful local quirk: New Jersey is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your fuel and you don't climb out at the pump. For a typical week-long Cape May area trip with 300 to 400 miles of driving, plan roughly $120 to $250 in fuel depending on rig and current prices. Pro tip: fill up at the Wawa on Route 9 in Rio Grande, just minutes from Burleigh.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Burleigh?
For summer, book early. Cape May County is one of the busiest beach destinations on the East Coast. For July and August stays at popular spots like Seashore Campsites, Holly Shores, or Big Timber Lake, reserve 4 to 6 months out, and weekends often fill by March. New Jersey State Park campgrounds, including Belleplain State Forest, take reservations through the NJ State Park Service reservation system and weekend sites disappear quickly. For shoulder season (May, September, October), 2 to 4 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, book your campground first, then book your RV. Many RVezy hosts will adjust pickup time around campground check-in (typically 2 to 3 p.m.).
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Burleigh?
Driving here is genuinely easy. Burleigh sits on flat coastal terrain with no mountains and wide, well-maintained roads. Your main routes are Route 9 (a calm two-lane shore road) and the Garden State Parkway. Note that the GSP has commercial-vehicle restrictions on its northern sections, but standard recreational RVs travel the southern stretch near Burleigh without issue. Avoid the narrow Victorian streets of downtown Cape May with anything over 25 feet, and watch for summer beach traffic on Friday and Sunday afternoons. Bridges to the barrier islands have generous clearance for RVs. Pro tip: leave Wildwood by 10 a.m. Sunday to dodge the GSP northbound crunch.
state.nj.us/turnpike/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Burleigh?
Cape May County campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable RV camping experience near Burleigh. Most private parks (Seashore Campsites, Holly Shores, Big Timber Lake, Beachcomber) offer full hookups with water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer at the site, plus pools, laundry, camp stores, Wi-Fi, and beach shuttles. Dump stations are available at every major private campground and at Belleplain State Forest for state-park campers without sewer hookups. Potable water fills are standard at site spigots or near the entrance, and many parks offer propane refills on site. Pro tip: if you're staying at Belleplain (no sewer hookups), plan to dump on your way out using the on-site station.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belleplain.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Burleigh?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in Burleigh listed on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette and/or sofa bed (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning (a must for Jersey Shore summers), a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor grills, and onboard generators as add-ons. Travel trailers offer the same interior layout minus the cab. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities checklist carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP outlet, high chair, or pack-and-play.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burleigh,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip easily. Most Burleigh-area hosts offer popular add-ons like bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor grills, bike racks, beach chairs and umbrellas (perfect for Wildwood and Cape May beaches), portable generators, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is typically at the host's home base near Cape May Court House, Rio Grande, or Wildwood, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Delivery to your campground is widely available for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary: many include 100 to 150 free miles per day with reasonable per-mile rates after, and some offer unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens for a fully turnkey arrival.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burleigh,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform: no cash, no checks, no off-platform transactions. You pay your rental total (nightly rate plus fees plus your chosen protection plan) at booking using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card a few days before the trip and is separate from your booking payment; amounts vary by RV but typically range from $500 to $1,500. Assuming the rig comes back in the condition it left (and within mileage and generator-hour limits), the hold is released shortly after return. Pro tip: take timestamped photos at pickup and dropoff for the fastest, smoothest deposit release.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Burleigh RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is wide open. Most Burleigh hosts welcome trips into Delaware (via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which accommodates RVs), Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, all classic East Coast RV road trip routes. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with some hosts and protection plans, so message the host directly before booking if that's your plan. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a popular 7-day loop from Burleigh is Cape May to Assateague Island (wild ponies) to Chincoteague, then back up through the Delmarva Peninsula.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere can I park or overnight an RV in the Burleigh area?
You've got plenty of legal, easy options. For where to park an RV in Burleigh overnight, your best bets are the local campgrounds (Big Timber Lake is closest, just minutes from Burleigh proper) and the many full-service parks across Cape May Court House, Cape May, and Wildwood. Day parking for sightseeing in Cape May is available at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal lot and at Cape May Point State Park, both of which can accommodate larger vehicles. Street parking in downtown Cape May and Wildwood is not RV-friendly, so stick to designated lots. Belleplain State Forest, about 25 minutes inland, is the nearest state-run campground. Pro tip: always confirm overnight policies with any private lot in advance, as rules can change seasonally.
