Campgrounds near Butler, New Jersey
Butler sits in Morris County in the New Jersey Highlands, roughly 30 miles northwest of Manhattan and within short driving distance of Passaic County's forested ridges, glacial lakes, and Appalachian Trail crossings. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to state parks and forests without giving up proximity to interstate routes and grocery stops.
The closest camping options range from rustic tent-oriented sites to full-hookup RV parks. Camp Wyanokie sits on 150 acres of forest at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest and surrounds a five-acre lake, while Wawayanda State Park in nearby Vernon Township offers group campsites reservable through camping.nj.gov, with a seven-person minimum. Fla-Net Park adds a local option closer to town.
For RV travelers who need hookups, Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, sits about an hour north in Orange County and offers full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electric connections. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park accepts trailers and RVs up to 30 feet, though without electrical hookups.
Things to do near Butler
Hiking is the dominant draw. Norvin Green State Forest has trails that climb hills up to 1,300 feet and offer views of the Manhattan skyline, the Wanaque Reservoir, Burnt Meadow Brook, and Lake Sonoma. Wawayanda State Park carries a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail and has more than sixty miles of hiking trails, with Wawayanda Mountain offering wide views from the summit.
Water activities cluster around the region's lakes. Wawayanda Lake supports fishing, swimming at a lifeguarded beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and boating (gas motors are not permitted), with kayak rentals available. Nearby swimming areas in Harriman State Park include Lake Tiorati Beach and Lake Welch Beach.
Families traveling with kids often plan short loop hikes, lake swims, and evenings around a fire ring, with grocery runs into Butler or Ringwood.

Camping in the Butler area is strongly seasonal. Most state-park tent and group sites operate on a spring-through-fall window: Wawayanda's group sites are open April 1 to October 31, and Harriman's Beaver Pond follows a similar warm-season schedule. Private RV parks run longer. Black Bear Campground is open all year with 50-amp full-hookup sites available year-round.
Summer weekends fill quickly. Families from the New York metro area drive north for lake access, and popular sites are booked out weeks in advance. New York State Parks accept camping reservations up to nine months in advance, and New Jersey's system allows bookings up to eleven months ahead, so early planning helps. Weekday arrivals tend to be quieter and easier to book.
Fall brings cooler nights, foliage across the Highlands, and lighter crowds through mid-October. Winter camping options are limited to a handful of private RV parks; state-park tent grounds close, and snow, ice, and short daylight hours make backcountry travel more demanding.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book near Butler
Reservation channels differ by operator. New Jersey state park campsites, including Wawayanda, are booked online at camping.nj.gov, generally up to eleven months in advance. New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica, with reservations accepted up to nine months in advance for Beaver Pond and other Harriman campgrounds.
Private parks book directly. Black Bear Campground takes reservations through its own website and phone line, and Camp Wyanokie handles rustic-site bookings through its own reservation page.
Before booking, confirm rig length and hookup needs. Beaver Pond accepts trailers or RVs up to 30 feet with no electrical hookups, and Camp Wyanokie does not accommodate RVs and offers no running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi.
What to expect near Butler
Sites in this region skew rustic rather than resort-style. Expect wooded, uneven terrain, gravel or dirt pads, and shared vault or basic toilets at state-park campgrounds. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office, and there are no shower facilities. Beaver Pond has comfort stations with showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station on site.
Rules can be strict. At Beaver Pond, alcohol is not permitted and pets are not allowed. Bear boxes are provided at Wawayanda campsites; food and coolers should be stored inside them or in a hard-sided vehicle overnight.
Cell coverage is patchy in the deeper forest tracts. Plan navigation, reservations, and grocery stops before leaving Butler or Route 23.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Butler, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Butler, NJ?
RV rental in Butler is often more affordable than national fleet pricing because you book directly from local owners on RVezy. Travel trailers in the Butler area typically run around $90 to $175 per night, campervans and Class B vans land between $150 and $250, and larger Class C motorhomes generally sit in the $200 to $325 range. To find a cheap RV rental in Butler, search mid-week dates, look for trips of 5+ nights since many hosts offer weekly discounts, and book outside of July and August when Morris County families head to the Highlands. Shoulder season in late September and early October delivers gorgeous foliage and some of the lowest pricing of the year.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Butler%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Butler, New Jersey?
Your standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Butler, NJ. New Jersey does not have a non-commercial RV license tier, and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission does not require a Commercial Driver's License for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, even for larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy you must be an approved driver (generally 25 or older), and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my Butler RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Butler includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Route 23 heading toward High Point or have an issue at a campground in the Highlands, help is one phone call away. RVezy offers tiered protection plans, and you (not the host) choose the level of coverage that fits your trip during checkout. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV, giving renters meaningful financial peace of mind on every motorhome rental in Butler.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Butler RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy that applies platform-wide (hosts don't set this themselves), and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel and receive a full refund. Refunds beyond that point depend on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels, guests receive a refund or travel credit. The specifics are spelled out on the RVezy site at checkout. Book early to secure the best Butler RVs for fall foliage weekends, when listings near the Delaware Water Gap fill up fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Butler?
Yes, your dog is welcome on the trip. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Butler, NJ, and you can filter listings by 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy to see them in one click. Once you've found a match, message the host to confirm any pet fee. For dog-friendly adventures nearby, Norvin Green State Forest and Ramapo Mountain State Forest both allow leashed dogs on their trails, and Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 20 minutes north) has wooded campsites that welcome pets. Pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, summer humidity in the Highlands can be tough on dogs.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/Can the RV be delivered to me in Butler instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Butler is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to driving a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts in the Butler and greater Morris County area will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a local campground like Panther Lake or Camp Taylor, or even a family reunion location. The host backs it in, levels it, connects the hookups, and walks you through every system before handing you the keys. Use the 'Delivery' filter when searching to see hosts who offer this. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, so closer pickup points save money.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Butler%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive, and is unlimited mileage available?
Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, and many Butler listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at a small per-mile fee. Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, so filter or message before booking to confirm. From Butler, you're about 35 miles to Manhattan, 45 miles to Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, 75 miles to the Poconos, around 110 miles to Philadelphia, and roughly 175 miles to Cape May at the Jersey Shore. Plan your route loop and confirm mileage with the host upfront, it's easier than buying extra miles later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Butler%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Butler, NJ for RV camping?
Butler sits right at the edge of the New Jersey Highlands, so you have great options. Top picks for RV camping near Butler include Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 20 minutes away, with wooded, mostly level sites), Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia (full hookups and a wildlife preserve next door), Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (pool, lake, family-friendly), Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River, and the Delaware Water Gap KOA just over the border in Pennsylvania. Mahlon Dickerson is the closest RV-friendly site to Butler and books up quickly for summer weekends, so reserve early.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhen is the best time of year for a Butler RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is peak RV season in Butler, but the real sweet spots are mid-May to mid-June and mid-September through late October. Spring brings highs in the 60s to 70s with blooming trails at Norvin Green State Forest, while fall delivers crisp 50s to 70s and stunning foliage across the Skylands region. Summer is warm and humid, with highs in the low to mid 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but lake days at Lake Hopatcong are excellent. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s with snow, so if you're up for cold-weather RV camping in Butler, look for listings with heated tanks. The second weekend of October is typically peak foliage, so book several weeks ahead.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Is that okay?
You're in good hands, first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy was built for. Every host does an in-person orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through driving, the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dumping tanks. You can also message your host directly before booking with any questions. For your first drive out of Butler, stick to lower-stress routes like Route 23 north toward Newfoundland or Route 287 toward the Highlands, and avoid the George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel until you're comfortable. Book a campervan or small Class C for your first trip, they drive much like a large SUV and park easily.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002253694-For-RentersWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always a phone call away. Every Butler RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and qualifying mechanical issues. If something acts up at the campground (say, an AC quits during a Jersey heatwave), message your host first, they know their RV best and often troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after every trip if you need a hand. Snap a quick video walkthrough at pickup so you have a reference for the water heater, propane valve, and breaker panel locations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Butler RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are exactly what most renters do from Butler. Popular routes include the Delaware Water Gap and Poconos (under 90 minutes west into PA), the Catskills and Hudson Valley in New York (about 90 minutes north), New England fall foliage runs to Vermont and New Hampshire, and even Acadia National Park in Maine. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. A Butler-to-Niagara Falls loop through the Finger Lakes is a classic week-long road trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the rough numbers. Campervans and Class B rigs around Butler typically get 16 to 20 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually a 25 to 40 percent reduction from its normal MPG. Gas stations in New Jersey are full-service by state law, so an attendant pumps for you, even in your RV. Fill up in Butler or Wayne before heading into the Delaware Water Gap, prices climb at the few stations near the recreation area.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Butler?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. New Jersey state park campgrounds (including Stokes State Forest, Worthington, and Round Valley Recreation Area) use the state's online reservation system and accept bookings well in advance. Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall foliage weekends in October sell out fastest, so aim for 4 to 6 months ahead for those dates. Private parks like Panther Lake and Camp Taylor also fill up early for summer. Weekday arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) often have last-minute availability even in peak season, and the campgrounds are noticeably quieter.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Butler?
Driving in and out of Butler is very manageable once you know the lay of the land. Butler sits near the intersection of Route 23 and Interstate 287, both wide, well-maintained highways that work well for an RV. The Highlands area has some hilly, winding stretches (such as Skyline Drive and Macopin Road), so take it slow if you're new to RV driving. Avoid downtown Manhattan, the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, and the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, RVs carrying propane are restricted or prohibited there. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through March. Use I-287 to bypass NYC entirely when heading north or west.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Butler?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Butler offer the essentials for a comfortable trip. New Jersey state parks like Stokes State Forest and Worthington provide picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and showers, with trailer sanitary stations (dump stations) typically open from spring through mid-fall. Private parks like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Camp Taylor offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Potable water fills are available at most park entrances. Not every state park site has electric hookups, so if you need to run AC during a humid July night, filter for electric or full-hookup sites when reserving.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/What's inside a typical Butler RV rental?
Modern RVs are surprisingly well-equipped. A typical Butler motorhome rental includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining and lounge seating, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted travel seats. Most Class C and Class A rigs come with a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts include outdoor chairs, a portable grill, and basic linens. Wi-Fi and TV vary by listing, so check the amenities section. Ask your host if a starter kit (toilet paper, soap, coffee filters) is included, many in the Butler area provide one to make first-timers comfortable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Butler%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Butler RV rental?
You can customize your rental to match the trip. Common add-ons on Butler listings include linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, extra generator hours, bike racks, kayak or SUP carriers, and pet fees if you're bringing a dog. Many hosts offer delivery and setup as a flat fee or per-mile rate, plus a dump-and-refill service so you don't have to handle wastewater. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Butler or a nearby town like Riverdale, Pequannock, or Kinnelon, and dropoff is typically the same location. Bundle linen, kitchen, and outdoor kits for a true turnkey first-timer experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Butler%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through RVezy at the time of booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment before pickup (amounts vary by RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition and on time. To avoid deposit issues, do a walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits, and don't smoke inside. Tidy up the kitchen and bag your trash before dropoff, hosts typically release deposits faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Butler during winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, winter RV rental in Butler is a great option in the New Jersey Highlands. Many hosts keep their rigs available year-round, and the ones equipped for cold weather have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups, so filter listings or message hosts to confirm winterization. December through February brings highs in the 30s and lows around 20F, plus regular snowfall, so trips to Mountain Creek for skiing or Camelback in the Poconos pair well with an RV basecamp. Book a site with 30/50-amp electric so you can run the furnace without burning through propane, and bring a heated water hose if you're staying multiple nights.
