Campgrounds near Califon, New Jersey
Califon sits in the rolling hills of Hunterdon County in northwestern New Jersey, along the South Branch of the Raritan River. The borough is small, but it is centrally placed for RV travelers heading to several New Jersey state parks and forests within a short drive. Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run State Recreational Area, Stephens State Park, and Jenny Jump State Forest all fall within roughly a 30-mile radius, giving renters multiple public-land options for a single trip.
The closest state campground is Voorhees State Park, located north of High Bridge in Hunterdon County. Spruce Run State Recreational Area, on one of the largest reservoirs in New Jersey, adds waterfront camping and boating a few miles south. Stephens State Park sits along the Musconetcong River near Hackettstown, and Jenny Jump State Forest lies farther northwest in Warren County.
For renters seeking a private-park experience with additional amenities, Goodland Country Club and Spa offers an alternative to the state-run sites. Together these options cover a range of styles, from primitive wooded tent sites to lakeside trailer spots and rustic shelters.
Things to do near Califon
Water recreation is a major draw at Spruce Run State Recreational Area, where the reservoir supports fishing, sailing, kayaking, and a designated swim beach. Anglers regularly target bass, trout, catfish, and perch, and the lake is stocked with trout each year.
Hiking is strong across the region. Voorhees State Park has multi-use trails through wooded hills with views toward Round Valley and Spruce Run reservoirs. Jenny Jump State Forest offers panoramic vistas of the Kittatinny Mountains and Great Meadows, with trails winding past glacier-carved rocky outcrops. Stephens State Park connects to trails along the Musconetcong River.
Stargazing is a signature activity here. Voorhees hosts the Paul H. Robinson Observatory, run by the New Jersey Astronomical Association, and Jenny Jump has the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey observatory, which offers public programs on Saturday evenings during the warmer months.

The New Jersey State Park Service operates its campgrounds on a defined season. Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run State Recreational Area, Stephens State Park, and Jenny Jump State Forest all open their family and group campsites from April 1 through October 31. Winter tent and trailer camping is generally not available, although the shelters at Jenny Jump remain available year-round for rustic cool-season stays.
Spring brings mild weather, wildflower blooms, and lower demand, though nights can still be cold and rain is frequent. Summer is peak season, with warm days, long evenings, and heavy weekend demand at the reservoir sites. Reservations for popular weekends, especially at Spruce Run, tend to fill well in advance.
Fall is a strong window for RV renters. Foliage across the Highlands peaks in mid to late October, temperatures are comfortable for hiking, and crowds ease after Labor Day. Reservation and site availability improve, but campers should book before parks close for the season on October 31.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Califon
New Jersey State Park Service campgrounds are booked through the official reservation system at camping.nj.gov. This portal handles reservations for Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run State Recreational Area, Stephens State Park, and Jenny Jump State Forest, including tent and trailer sites, group sites, and shelters. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, with a standard transaction fee added at checkout. Cancellation and early-departure fees differ for New Jersey residents and out-of-state guests.
Same-day reservations at Spruce Run can be made online until 2 p.m. or by contacting the park office. Private options such as Goodland Country Club and Spa are booked directly through the property rather than through the state portal.
What to expect at campgrounds near Califon
Most state campgrounds in this region are rustic. Voorhees offers roughly 47 tent and trailer campsites, with about 8 sites that can accommodate a trailer, but there are no electric or water hook-ups at the campsites, though a dump station is on site. Spruce Run has over 60 sites, including 7 trailer-only sites with water and 30/50 amp electric hook-ups, plus a dump station within the campground. Jenny Jump has 22 tent and trailer sites plus 8 shelters with wood-burning stoves and double-deck bunks.
Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the campgrounds at Voorhees and Spruce Run. Fires are allowed only in provided rings or approved camp stoves, and burn restrictions may apply during dry conditions. Expect modern restrooms and showers within walking distance, level sites with picnic tables and fire rings, and limited cell service in the more wooded areas.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Califon, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Califon, NJ typically cost?
RV rental in Califon is one of the most affordable ways to explore Hunterdon County. On RVezy, travel trailers and pop-ups generally start around $75 to $125 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. You will save the most by booking midweek, traveling in May or September when summer demand cools, and staying at least four nights to unlock the weekly discounts many hosts offer. Filter by Instant Book and pop-up trailers to find the cheapest RV rental Califon has available, especially for a quick weekend escape to Round Valley about 30 minutes south.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Califon%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Califon, New Jersey?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Califon. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and trailers under 26,001 pounds, which covers nearly every RV on RVezy. To be an approved driver you must be 25 or older, hold a valid driver's license from any U.S. state or Canadian province, and complete RVezy's ID verification during booking. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Most first-time renters in Hunterdon County are surprised how simple the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection coverage included when I rent an RV in Califon?
Yes, peace of mind is built in. Every RV rental in Califon booked on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is available whether you are heading up Route 513 toward Voorhees State Park or crossing the Delaware Water Gap. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, and you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip at checkout (hosts do not choose for you). It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides substantial financial protection so you can focus on the trip. Review the coverage tiers during booking and pick the one that lets you sleep easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Califon RV rental?
Yes, and that is part of why booking with RVezy is low risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every rental, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so if life shifts in the first day or two, you are protected. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You will see the full cancellation policy on RVezy before you confirm the booking. Book earlier rather than later for the best rig selection in Hunterdon County, since you can always adjust if your Califon RV trip plans evolve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Califon?
Yes, your dog is welcome on the adventure. Pet-friendly RV rental Califon options are easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page, and many local hosts welcome dogs. Once you have your RV, there are great dog-friendly spots nearby: Voorhees State Park in Glen Gardner allows leashed dogs on trails, the Columbia Trail (a rail-trail running right through Califon along the South Branch Raritan) is a favorite for dog walkers, and Ken Lockwood Gorge Wildlife Management Area is just minutes away. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and size limit so check-in is smooth.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/voorhees.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Califon?
Yes, RV delivery in Califon is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts in the Hunterdon County area offer delivery and setup directly to popular nearby campgrounds like Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, Jugtown Mountain Campsites in Asbury, or to your own driveway. The host arrives, levels the rig, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check the host's delivery radius and fee. Delivery is especially valuable for first-time renters because it removes the stress of backing a trailer into a wooded site.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Califon%2C%20New%20JerseyHow many miles per day can I drive on my Califon RV rental?
You will have plenty of range to roam. Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage policy, and many Califon-area listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Popular day trips from Califon include Voorhees State Park (about 8 miles away), Round Valley Reservoir (around 15 miles south), the Delaware Water Gap (about 45 miles northwest), New Hope, PA (about 35 miles southwest), and New York City (about 60 miles east). If you are planning an RV road trip from Califon up to the Catskills or down the Jersey Shore, filter for unlimited mileage listings to skip the math entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Califon%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Califon for my RV?
There are real gems within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Califon include Voorhees State Park in Glen Gardner (just up Route 513, with electric hookups and a public observatory), Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton (miles of shoreline on a large reservoir), Round Valley Recreation Area in Lebanon (great for swimming and boating), Jugtown Mountain Campsites in Asbury (pull-through RV sites with water and electric), and Mountain View Campground in Little York (pet-friendly and family-run). State park sites book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve through the New Jersey state parks reservation system at least 60 to 90 days ahead, especially for July and August.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Califon?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. May and June bring green hills, blooming mountain laurel, and daytime highs in the 70s, perfect for hiking the Columbia Trail. July and August are warm (mid-80s) and humid, ideal for swimming at Spruce Run or paddling the South Branch Raritan. September and October are arguably the most magical for RV camping in Califon, with crisp mornings, fall foliage peaking in mid-to-late October, and fewer crowds. Winters here are cold (20s to 40s F) and most campgrounds close from November through March. Book a shoulder-season Hunterdon County trip in late September to score better rates and stunning leaf color.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to do great, and you will not be on your own. First time renting an RV is very common on RVezy, and every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, awnings, the propane system, and dumping tanks. Califon's quiet country roads and the gentle terrain of Hunterdon County are a great place to get comfortable behind the wheel before tackling bigger trips. You can also message your host anytime during the rental for tips. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Califon for your first trip, do a short two-night shakedown at Voorhees State Park about 15 minutes away, then plan a bigger adventure once you have the hang of it.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat happens if I have an issue on the road during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Route 78, run out of propane at Round Valley, or need a jump-start in the Voorhees State Park lot, help is one phone call away. For non-emergency questions (how does the awning retract, why won't the fridge cool on propane), your host is your first call and usually responds within minutes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Save the roadside number and your host's contact info to your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Califon RV rental into other states or up to Canada?
Yes, the Northeast opens up beautifully from Califon. Interstate travel within the U.S. is standard on RVezy rentals, and popular RV road trip from Califon routes include the Delaware Water Gap and Poconos (about 1 hour northwest), the Catskills in New York (about 2.5 hours north), Lancaster County in PA (about 2 hours southwest), New England up toward Acadia National Park, and the Jersey Shore (about 90 minutes east). Travel into Canada depends on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the host directly to confirm before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. For a classic Northeast loop, plan Califon to the Finger Lakes to Niagara as a week-long itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel costs should I budget for my Hunterdon County RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans and Class B rigs get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 15 MPG while towing). New Jersey gas prices usually track close to the national average. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop around Hunterdon County and the Delaware Water Gap, budget roughly $90 to $140 in fuel depending on the rig. New Jersey is a full-service state, so stay in the driver's seat at the pump, and fuel up at Costco or Wawa in Flemington for some of the lowest prices before heading out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Califon?
Book sooner rather than later, especially for summer. New Jersey state park campgrounds like Voorhees, Spruce Run, and Round Valley use the state's online reservation system and open bookings well in advance. For July and August weekends, popular sites can fill within hours of release, so aim to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, 2 to 4 weeks out is usually fine. Private campgrounds like Jugtown Mountain Campsites also fill on holiday weekends. If you strike out on a state park, check Hipcamp for private farm and vineyard stays around Hunterdon County, which often have last-minute availability and unique settings.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Califon for a larger RV?
You will find it manageable with a little awareness. Califon sits in the rolling hills of western Hunterdon County, so most roads are scenic two-lane country routes like Route 513 and County Route 512, which handle Class C motorhomes and travel trailers comfortably. Interstate 78 is about 10 minutes south and gives easy access east toward NYC or west toward Pennsylvania. Watch for low railroad bridges in nearby Clinton and High Bridge, narrow shoulders on Raritan River Road near Ken Lockwood Gorge, and winter ice from December through February. Use an RV-specific GPS app to auto-route around low clearances, and avoid driving into downtown NYC where height restrictions and tight streets are not RV-friendly.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Califon?
You will be well taken care of at most local campgrounds. Voorhees State Park offers wooded sites with potable water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station (no individual sewer hookups). Spruce Run Recreation Area has lakeside sites with similar facilities plus a swimming beach. Jugtown Mountain Campsites in Asbury provides water and electric hookups, a seasonal pool, modern restrooms, and a camp store. Mountain View Campground offers water hookups and a more rustic, spacious feel. Spruce Run and Voorhees both have public dump stations for fills and disposal between stops. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a sewer hose with elbow, and a surge protector to handle any campground setup you will meet.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/sprucerun.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Califon?
More than you might expect. Most Califon-area motorhome and travel trailer listings come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 2 to 6 (convertible dinettes and bunks), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, heat, and propane systems are standard. Many hosts also include a TV, outdoor awning, camping chairs, and a Bluetooth stereo. Wi-Fi and onboard generators are common in Class A and Class C motorhomes and less so in pop-ups. Each seat with a seatbelt is a legal passenger spot in motion. Read the listing's amenities list carefully and message the host to confirm extras like linens, coffee makers, or a grill.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Califon%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize the trip nicely. Popular add-ons from Califon-area hosts include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, and outdoor grills. Many hosts also offer prepaid propane fills and dump-station service so you can return the RV without chores. Pickup is typically at the host's location, often within 20 minutes of Califon (think Long Valley, High Bridge, Clinton, or Lebanon), with a 60 to 90-minute orientation walkthrough included. RV delivery to your campground is another big perk, often available for a flat fee plus mileage. Ask the host about a one-way trip if you are planning a longer route, and confirm all pickup and return times through the RVezy messaging system.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Califon%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never need to hand cash or a check to a host. When you book your campervan rental Califon or motorhome, you pay the rental total, taxes, fees, and any add-ons securely online. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card, not charged, and is released after the trip assuming no damages or policy violations. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos and video of any existing scratches or interior wear, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and respect the mileage policy. Keep all communication inside the RVezy app for a clear record.
