Campgrounds near Closter, New Jersey
Closter sits in Bergen County on the Palisades ridge just west of the Hudson River, roughly a half-hour drive from Midtown Manhattan. RV travelers based here have two very different worlds within reach: the urban waterfront campgrounds of Jersey City and Brooklyn, and the forested state parks of the Hudson Highlands and North Jersey Highlands. There is no campground inside Closter itself, so trips are planned around nearby parks accessible via the Palisades Interstate Parkway, the George Washington Bridge, and the New York State Thruway.
The closest RV-friendly option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, an urban basecamp for visiting New York City. For a more traditional camping experience, Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park, located about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge.
Further afield, Camp Wyanokie sits in the New Jersey Highlands at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest, Floyd Bennett Field offers National Park Service camping on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park anchors a large Hudson Highlands preserve. Each has different rules on RVs, hookups, and pets, so trip planning starts with matching rig size to the site.
Things to do near Closter
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, most guests skip driving into Manhattan entirely. The park sits across the Hudson from Lower Manhattan, with a light rail stop nearby and PATH train access to Manhattan within walking distance. Liberty State Park, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty are all reachable without moving the RV.
Harriman State Park is the region's outdoor centerpiece. More than 200 miles of trails range from easy to strenuous, and the park has 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Camp Wyanokie borders Norvin Green State Forest, which offers miles of hiking trails, including views from Wyanokie High Point.
At Pelton Pond, a section of the Appalachian Trail passes through Clarence Fahnestock park, and Canopus Lake has a sandy swimming beach and boat rentals in summer.

The Closter area has a four-season climate. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold with regular snow, and spring and fall bring the most comfortable camping weather. Most state and national park campgrounds run on a spring-to-fall schedule, so timing matters.
Beaver Pond at Harriman runs a regular reservation season from early May through mid-October, and weekends fill fast because of the park's proximity to New York City. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock traditionally runs mid-May through mid-October, but the campground is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse, so campers should confirm current status before booking. Camp Wyanokie is open for tent camping in the warmer months, with rustic sites and no on-site staff.
By contrast, the urban options run longer. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, while Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field runs roughly April through October. Fall foliage peaks in the Hudson Highlands in mid to late October.

How to book
Booking systems vary by campground, and each has its own window. New York State parks, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond, use ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites opening at the 9-month window at 8 AM weekdays and 9 AM weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3 PM, and no walk-ins are allowed for RV loops.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field books through Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to six months in advance. Camp Wyanokie uses Campspot, and all reservations must be made before 5 PM on the date of check-in, with a total of 7 days or less per stay. Liberty Harbor takes reservations directly through the operator's website and by phone.
What to expect
Fit the campground to the rig. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch. Camp Wyanokie is rustic tent camping only and cannot accommodate any trailers, RVs, motorhomes, or pop-up campers.
Urban sites trade nature for access. Liberty Harbor operates as a fenced section within a marina area, providing hookups in an open lot, and functions as a staging area for city exploration rather than a traditional campground. Floyd Bennett Field is a former airfield with RV sites on a large concrete plaza and no electric or water hookups; a dump station is available.
Bear activity occurs at Beaver Pond, and campers must follow the bear habitat guidelines provided at check-in. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, a rule that surprises many first-time visitors.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Closter, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Closter cost per night?
An RV rental in Closter is more affordable than most travelers expect, often coming in well under the cost of a Bergen County or Hudson Valley hotel plus meals. On RVezy, travel trailers near Closter typically range from about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs sit higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Closter, book mid-week, travel in the late April or October shoulder seasons, and sort listings by total trip cost. Travel trailers are the budget sweet spot if your host offers delivery, since you skip the fuel cost of driving a large motorhome through metro traffic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Closter,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Closter, NJ?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Closter. New Jersey does not require a special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal recreational use, even for larger Class A motorhomes, as long as the trip is non-commercial. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, which is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters in Bergen County are pleasantly surprised by how simple the paperwork is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my RVezy booking in Closter?
Every RV rental in Closter booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward the Hudson Valley or the Delaware Water Gap with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort zone, and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection and is one of the main reasons first-timers feel confident booking. Just upload your driver's license, pick your plan at checkout, and you're road-ready.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Closter is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation on the platform. There is a grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund tiers apply depending on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Extenuating circumstances such as natural disasters are reviewed by the RVezy support team. Book your Closter RV trip early to lock in the best rigs for fall foliage weekends, knowing flexibility is built in. You can review the current cancellation terms on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Closter?
Yes, there are plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Closter. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see only rigs whose hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you're on the road, the Palisades Interstate Park trails just east of Closter allow leashed dogs, and most New Jersey state park campgrounds (including Stokes State Forest and Worthington State Forest) accept pets at designated sites with proof of rabies vaccination. Pack a copy of your dog's vaccination records since campgrounds may ask at check-in, and bring a long lead for shady RV-side hangouts at nearby parks like Harriman State Park across the river.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/Can the RV be delivered to me in Closter so I don't have to drive it?
Yes, RV delivery in Closter is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a great choice if you're nervous about driving a large rig through Bergen County. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to your driveway or your campground (Harriman State Park or Camp Taylor are popular drop-offs), then set up hookups, level the rig, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching, message the host for a delivery quote based on miles, and you can essentially treat the RV like a cabin that arrives ready to enjoy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Closter,%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on a Closter RV rental, and are unlimited mileage rentals available?
You have real road-trip range from Closter, and many hosts offer either a generous daily mileage allowance or RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which you can see right on the listing page. Typical included allowances run 100 to 150 miles per day, with additional miles billed at roughly $0.30 to $0.45 each. From Closter you're about 20 miles to Manhattan, 75 miles to the Delaware Water Gap, 120 miles to the Catskills, and 160 miles to Cape May. If you're planning a long loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host directly to negotiate a flat package for your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Closter,%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Closter for RV camping?
You're in a sweet spot for RV camping near Closter because the Hudson Highlands and northern New Jersey both have excellent options within an hour or two. Top picks include Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park (about 35 miles north in NY, with electric sites and lake swimming), Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia, NJ (roughly 60 miles west with full hookups), Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (Morris County's full-hookup public campground), and Worthington State Forest along the Delaware Water Gap. Book New York sites through ReserveAmerica and New Jersey sites through camping.nj.gov; both typically open reservations many months in advance.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harrimanWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Closter?
The sweet spot for a Closter RV trip is late April through mid-June and again from early September through late October, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 60s and 70s F and humidity backs off. Fall is especially scenic: foliage on the Palisades cliffs and through Harriman State Park typically peaks in mid to late October, and campgrounds are noticeably quieter mid-week. Summer (July and August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s F, ideal if you want lake swimming. Winter rentals are available from some hosts, but expect freezing nights and possible snow from December through February.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay picking up in Closter?
You'll be just fine. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, hookups, the propane system, slide-outs, and emergency shutoffs before you leave the driveway. For first-time renters in Closter, ask your host about avoiding the Palisades Interstate Parkway (which restricts commercial vehicles and many RVs) and instead taking Route 9W north or I-287 west to clear the metro area quickly. Many local hosts also offer delivery within Bergen County, which is the ultimate confidence-builder. Choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip; they drive much like a large van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180233-For-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RV rental in Closter booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with your protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. One call connects you to a dispatcher who arranges help wherever you are, whether that's on the New York State Thruway, in the Catskills, or at a campground in the Delaware Water Gap. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip for non-emergency questions. Save the roadside assistance number from your check-in packet in your phone before you pull away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Closter RV rental on a road trip across state lines or into Canada?
Interstate travel is allowed and is one of the best things about an RV road trip from Closter, since you're on the edge of New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Most hosts approve trips up through New England, down the Atlantic coast, or west into the Poconos and the Finger Lakes with no special paperwork. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan terms, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage does not extend there. Confirm your route in the booking message thread to keep everyone aligned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for, and what are gas prices like near Closter?
Plan your fuel budget around realistic numbers: Class C motorhomes near Closter average 8 to 10 MPG, Class A rigs run 6 to 8 MPG, campervans (Class B) get about 15 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 12 MPG. Regular gas in Bergen County usually runs near or slightly above the national average. New Jersey is a full-service gas state (you cannot pump your own), so pull in slowly and tell the attendant the grade and dollar amount. Fill up in NJ before crossing into New York, where prices and taxes are often higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Closter RV trip?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near Closter. New Jersey State Parks open reservations several months in advance through camping.nj.gov, and New York State Parks (including Harriman and Bear Mountain) use ReserveAmerica with a similar booking window. For summer weekends and any fall foliage Saturday in October, popular spots like Beaver Pond at Harriman and Worthington State Forest can fill quickly after release. Target Sunday through Thursday nights for much easier availability, and set a calendar reminder for the exact day your dates open so you can secure your site.
camping.nj.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Closter for a larger RV?
Closter sits in a metro area, so smart route planning matters. The Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and many motorhomes, and several New York parkways have length and clearance limits, so plan to use Route 9W, I-95, I-287, and the New York State Thruway instead. Watch for low clearances on parkways throughout New York and northern New Jersey (the Saw Mill, Hutchinson, and Bronx River parkways are all RV no-gos), and aim to leave Bergen County before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m. to avoid rush-hour traffic. Download an RV-specific routing app like RV Trip Wizard or CoPilot RV to automatically avoid restricted parkways.
njdottravelinfo.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Closter?
You'll find a full range of options for RV camping in Closter's surrounding region. Harriman State Park's Beaver Pond Campground offers electric hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station; Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Morris County has full water, electric, and sewer hookups; and Worthington State Forest offers more rustic riverside sites. Most New Jersey state forests provide potable water fill stations and a centralized dump station even at non-hookup loops. Top off your fresh-water tank and dump grey and black tanks before leaving any campground, since pull-through stations along I-80 and I-287 can be scarce. The Flying J in Bloomsbury, NJ has full RV services if you need a mid-trip refresh.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/worthington-state-forest/What's actually inside a typical RV rental from Closter?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental near Closter sleeps 4 to 7 across a queen bed, convertible dinette, and sometimes bunk beds, with a full kitchen (3-burner propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace, awning, and ample seatbelted seating. Many rigs include a TV, and some hosts offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators, and outdoor speakers as add-ons. Travel trailers come similarly equipped minus the driving cab. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm Wi-Fi range if you plan to work remotely from a campsite in the Hudson Valley.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Closter,%20New%20JerseyWhat popular add-ons do hosts offer, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Closter often offer optional add-ons like generators, portable propane firepits, bike racks, kayaks, camp chair and table packages, Wi-Fi hotspots, linen and kitchen kits, and the popular delivery and setup service. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in or near Closter at a time you agree on through the RVezy message thread; the host gives you a full walk-through, and drop-off is usually at the same location with tanks emptied and fuel topped off (or paid as a service fee). Ask about a generator add-on if you're planning to boondock in the Catskills, where shore power isn't always available.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Closter,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to your host. You pay the rental total (plus protection and any add-ons) at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, and the host doesn't receive their payout until after your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is held separately prior to pickup; the amount is set by the host and shown clearly on the listing, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars for a motorhome rental in Closter. As long as you return the RV in the condition you got it, the hold is released after your trip. Take dated photos and a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off to keep the process smooth.
