Campgrounds near Dorothy, NJ
Dorothy is an unincorporated community in Weymouth Township, Atlantic County, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. It sits about 30 minutes inland from Atlantic City and Ocean City, with wildlife management areas including Tuckahoe, Maple Lake, and Menantico Ponds nearby. The setting is flat, sandy, and heavily wooded with pitch pine and oak, and the Great Egg Harbor River drains east toward the Atlantic.
RV travelers typically use Dorothy as a quiet base for the South Jersey shore, Wharton State Forest, and Cape May County beaches. Spacious Skies Country Oaks sits within the Pine Barrens south of Wharton State Forest and offers back-in and pull-through RV sites that can accommodate all sizes, with picnic table, fire ring, 30 or 50-amp electric, and sewer. Nearby options include Mays Landing Campground, Pleasant Valley Family Campground, and Winding River Campground along the river corridors north and west of Dorothy.
Buena Vista Campground rounds out the choices to the west, closer to vineyards and the Route 40 corridor. All five are private parks, so state-forest permits are not required to stay at them.
Things to do near Dorothy
The Atlantic City boardwalk, Steel Pier, and casino district are roughly 30 to 40 minutes east by car, and Ocean City's family beaches sit at a similar distance southeast. Closer to camp, the Warren E. Fox Nature Center at Estell Manor Park anchors environmental programming for the Atlantic County park system and has short interpretive trails suitable for kids.
Wharton State Forest lies just north and offers a variety of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as rivers and lakes for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The historic ironworks village at Batsto anchors the north end of the forest, and local outfitters rent canoes and kayaks with shuttle service on the Mullica, Wading, and Batsto rivers.
On-site amenities at Spacious Skies Country Oaks, Winding River Campground, Pleasant Valley Family Campground, and Buena Vista Campground typically include pools, jumping pillows, arcades, and themed weekends, which keeps rainy or beach-off days easy with kids.

The private RV parks around Dorothy generally operate from spring through fall, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. July and August book heaviest because they combine warm ocean water at the nearby shore with school-holiday scheduling. Weekends often sell out four to eight weeks in advance in summer, and holiday weekends fill earlier.
Spring and early fall are the shoulder seasons. April through mid-June brings mild days, blooming Pine Barrens, and lower occupancy, though ticks and mosquitoes are active near water. September and October offer warm days, cooler nights, and easier reservations, with fall foliage in the oaks peaking in late October.
Winter is quiet. Many private parks near Dorothy close or run reduced services from late October through March, while Wharton State Forest keeps Atsion campsites open year-round, though the trailer sanitary station operates April 1 through October 31. Nor'easters and coastal storms can bring wind, heavy rain, and occasional snow, so travelers arriving off-season should confirm gate hours and hookup availability before departure.

How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Dorothy, including Spacious Skies Country Oaks, Mays Landing Campground, Pleasant Valley Family Campground, Winding River Campground, and Buena Vista Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Deposits are usually required at booking, and cancellation windows tighten as arrival approaches, so read the specific park's policy before committing.
For public land, New Jersey state park and forest reservations are accepted at camping.nj.gov up to 11 months in advance for tent, trailer, primitive, RV, cabin, shelter, lean-to, and wilderness sites. Atsion in Wharton State Forest offers 50 tent and trailer sites with a 22-foot maximum length, and a two-night minimum stay applies. State sites in Wharton have no RV hookups, so larger rigs should plan on the private parks.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Dorothy are paved but rural, with two-lane state routes leading in from the Atlantic City Expressway and Route 40. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and thins inside the state forest. GPS routing through the Pine Barrens can suggest sand roads that are not suitable for RVs, so stick to numbered routes and campground-provided directions.
Sites at the private parks include picnic table, fire ring, and 30 or 50-amp electric, with water and sewer at most RV pads. The soil is sandy and drains fast after rain. Ticks, mosquitoes, and biting flies are common from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and check for ticks after any hike or paddle.
Black bears are present but uncommon this far south in the Pinelands, and standard food storage is enough for most stays.
