Campgrounds near Dumont, New Jersey
Dumont sits in Bergen County, roughly 15 miles from Manhattan and within an hour's drive of a mix of urban RV parks and state-park campgrounds in northern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley. The closest full-hookup option is Liberty Harbor RV Park on the Jersey City waterfront, which caters to travelers who want quick transit access to New York City.
For a more traditional camping trip, renters typically head west into the New Jersey Highlands or north across the state line into New York. Harriman State Park in Rockland and Orange counties is one of New York's largest state parks and features 31 lakes and reservoirs, streams, public camping, and mountain vistas. Its Beaver Pond Campground sits adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, about a 30-mile drive north of Dumont.
Closer to home, Wawayanda State Park straddles Sussex and Passaic counties in Vernon and West Milford, and the rustic Camp Wyanokie offers forested tent sites, while Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Recreation Area provides a coastal option in Brooklyn.
Things to do near Dumont
Trip planning from Dumont splits cleanly between city activities and Highlands recreation. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, families can reach the Statue of Liberty ferry, Liberty State Park, and the PATH train into Manhattan without moving the rig.
For outdoor days, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park puts campers within walking distance of Lake Welch swimming beach and provides immediate access to Harriman State Park's extensive network of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail. Fishing and boating are available on Lake Welch with the appropriate permits.
Wawayanda State Park adds lake swimming, paddling, and roughly 60 miles of marked trails, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, while Camp Wyanokie borders Norvin Green State Forest for hiking and small-lake fishing.

Camping season around Dumont is driven by state-park calendars. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through the start of May, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Seasonal boat permits for the Palisades Region are valid from April 1 through November 30. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out fastest.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. Late spring and summer are the busiest stretches and the best times for paddling and swimming. Fall foliage in the Hudson Highlands and Ramapo Mountains generally peaks in mid to late October, and many state campgrounds close for the season shortly after.
Winter options are limited. Most state-park campgrounds in the region shut down, while urban RV parks such as Liberty Harbor remain open year-round for travelers with self-contained rigs and cold-weather gear.

Budgeting fuel is simple once you know the basics. Campervans and Class B rentals get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, Class A rigs run 7 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 15 mpg combined). Gas in Bergen County typically runs near the New Jersey state average, and remember, in New Jersey, attendants pump your fuel for you, no self-serve. For a weekend trip from Dumont to Harriman and back (about 80 miles), figure roughly $25 to $50 in gas depending on rig. Pro tip: check current pump prices before crossing into New York, where fuel taxes can differ.

Book sooner than you think, especially for summer. New York state parks like Harriman and Bear Mountain open reservations 9 months out through ReserveAmerica, and the best waterfront sites at Beaver Pond sell out quickly for July and August weekends. New Jersey state parks use the NJ State Park Service reservation system and also open about 9 months in advance. For private RV parks like Black Bear Campground, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually safe. Last-minute? Try midweek nights, you'll often find openings even in peak season. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 9-month-out date to grab prime fall foliage weekends in the Catskills.

Dumont sits in a dense suburban grid, so plan your departure for off-peak hours: before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m., and avoid 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. The George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel have height restrictions and tolls, most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers are fine, but check your RV height before routing. The Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and trailers, so use I-87 or Route 17 north instead. Winters bring occasional snow and salt, summers can mean thunderstorms. Pro tip: route through the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge (formerly Tappan Zee) heading north, it's RV-friendly and bypasses NYC traffic entirely.

To avoid issues, do a thorough video walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, document everything, and respect the mileage and pet rules. Pro tip: review the deposit amount on the listing upfront so you can plan your card limits.

Yes, a cheap RV rental in Dumont is very doable if you know where to look. Travel trailers are the most affordable choice, starting around $75 to $100 per night, especially when paired with a host who offers delivery so you don't need a tow vehicle. Use the price filter on RVezy, sort low-to-high, and target shoulder seasons (April, May, September, October) when nightly rates can drop 20 to 30 percent. Smaller campervan rental Dumont options are also budget-friendly on fuel. Pro tip: book Sunday to Thursday for the biggest savings, and message hosts about weekly discounts, many knock 10 to 15 percent off five-plus night trips.
