Camping near Erma, New Jersey
Erma sits in Lower Township at the southern tip of New Jersey, roughly three miles from the Cape May ferry terminal and within a short drive of both Cape May and the Wildwoods. The location gives RV travelers access to the Jersey Shore beaches, the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, and the Delaware Bay without staying inside the busier resort towns.
Campgrounds in the immediate area are private, full-service RV parks rather than public lands. Holly Shores Campground, Sun Outdoors Cape May, Beachcomber Camping Resort, Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood, and Sun Retreats Cape May are the closest options and typically offer full hookups, pools, and shuttle or bike access to the beaches.
Cape May County is one of the most campground-dense areas in the state. County tourism materials describe the Jersey Cape as having dozens of campgrounds and thousands of sites concentrated on the mainland side of the barrier islands, making it a common base for RV travelers exploring the southern shore.
Things to do near Erma
Beaches are the main draw. Cape May's swimming beaches, Sunset Beach on the Delaware Bay, and the free public beaches of Wildwood are all within about fifteen minutes of Erma. The Wildwood boardwalk stretches roughly two miles and includes three Morey's Piers amusement parks, arcades, and family dining.
Nature travel is strong on this peninsula. The Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, Cape May Point State Park, and the Cape May Bird Observatory are known for spring and fall migration. Families often combine a day at the Cape May County Park and Zoo, which is free, with a ride on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to Delaware.
Cape May's historic district, the Cape May Lighthouse, whale and dolphin watching cruises, and several nearby wineries round out rainy-day and evening options.

The Cape May area runs on a classic shore season. Most private campgrounds open in April and close in October, with peak demand between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Holiday weekends, the Wildwoods car shows, and Cape May's fall migration weekends are the tightest booking windows, and popular sites at parks like Holly Shores Campground and Sun Outdoors Cape May often fill weeks in advance.
Spring and early fall are the shoulder seasons. Weather is cooler, ocean water is still swimmable into September, and bird migration peaks in May and again from late August through October. Rates and crowds drop noticeably after Labor Day.
Winter is quiet. Snow is possible from December through March, coastal storms can bring flooding to low-lying roads, and most campgrounds are closed or limited to seasonal storage. Travelers who want a winter stay should confirm operating dates directly with the park.
How to book near Erma
Private campgrounds in the Erma and Cape May area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and many also list availability on Campspot or similar aggregators. Full-hookup RV sites, pull-throughs, and waterfront or pool-view sites are usually released on a rolling calendar and often sell out first.
For summer weekends, book Holly Shores Campground, Sun Outdoors Cape May, Beachcomber Camping Resort, Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood, and Sun Retreats Cape May several months out. Minimum-night stays of two or three nights are common on weekends and holidays.
If public-land camping is preferred, Belleplain State Forest to the north takes reservations through the New Jersey State Park Service at camping.nj.gov. Water and electric hookups there are limited to the CCC section, and the maximum RV length is around 35 feet.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Erma are mostly at established RV resorts with paved or gravel pads, water, electric, and sewer, plus pools, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi. Expect a family resort atmosphere in July and August, with themed weekends, planned activities, and busy pool decks.
Roads in and around Cape May are flat and easy to tow, but the last approach to some beach towns includes narrow residential streets and low bridges over the barrier island channels. Plan to drop off at the campground before sightseeing in Cape May's historic core, where RV parking is limited.
Mosquitoes and greenhead flies can be heavy in July, ticks are present in wooded areas year-round, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Pack accordingly and confirm pet policies, since rules vary by resort.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Erma, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Erma, NJ typically cost?
RV rental in Erma, NJ is more affordable than most people expect, especially when you split costs with family or friends. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A coaches start around $250. Because Erma sits right next to Cape May, peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day) brings the highest rates, while May, September, and early October offer the same gorgeous beach weather at noticeably lower prices. For a cheap RV rental in Erma, filter by travel trailers with delivery included, you skip fuel costs since the host drives it to your campsite. Pro tip: book at least 60 days ahead for July weekends to lock in the best inventory.
visitnj.org/nj-regions/southern-shoreWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Erma, NJ?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Erma, NJ. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for standard motorhomes and travel trailers rented through RVezy. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking platform, no in-person paperwork required. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, you can be booked and ready for your Cape May beach trip in under 15 minutes.
nj.gov/mvc/license/cdl.htmIs my RV rental in Erma protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Garden State Parkway with confidence. During checkout you choose from different protection tiers based on how much coverage you want, the choice is yours, not the host's. The plan covers eligible damages to the RV during your trip and is separate from traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap like a scraped awning or chipped windshield doesn't ruin your Cape May getaway. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, it takes two minutes and makes any claim painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Erma RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book. That means you can lock in your dates today and still have flexibility if your plans change. The exact refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel and whether unusual circumstances like a tropical storm affect Cape May County during Atlantic hurricane season (June through November). The full policy is explained during checkout and in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: if a named storm is forecast, message RVezy support early, they're available 7 days a week to walk you through your options.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Erma is easy to find, just toggle the "Pet-Friendly" filter when you search. Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area allows leashed dogs year-round, Cape May city beaches permit dogs on the sand from September 16 through May 14, and Sunset Beach in Cape May Point is dog-friendly anytime. Seashore Campsites & RV Resort in nearby Cape May also welcomes pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75) and ask about their favorite local dog spots.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Erma?
Yes, and RV delivery in Erma is one of the smartest moves you can make, especially if it's your first time. Many hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Seashore Campsites, Cape Island Resort, Beachcomber Camping Resort, or even a private driveway, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You skip the stress of towing or driving a large vehicle through Cape May's narrow Victorian-era streets, and you arrive to a fully set-up basecamp. Delivery fees usually range from $2 to $5 per mile or a flat rate within 25 miles. Pro tip: filter by "Delivery" on RVezy and message a few hosts to compare quotes.

Want to extend? The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a scenic 8-hour drive south. Cape Island Resort offers wooded sites just outside historic Cape May. Beachcomber Camping Resort in Cape May Court House features waterparks and is a hit with families. Pro tip: book summer weekends 4 to 6 months ahead, Cape May campgrounds fill up faster than the hotels do.
capemaycountynj.gov/210/Parks-RecreationWhen is the best time for an RV trip to Erma, NJ?
Erma shines from late May through mid-October, but the smartest window is shoulder season. June averages highs of 78°F with warm ocean water and smaller crowds before July 4th. September is the local favorite: 75°F days, 65°F nights, fewer tourists, and the famous Cape May Bird Observatory fall migration in full swing. July and August bring peak beach weather (mid-80s) but also peak prices and traffic. April and October are cooler (55 to 68°F) but perfect for whale-watching cruises and quieter campgrounds. Winter RV camping in Erma is possible at year-round parks for storm-watchers and birders. Pro tip: book your RV camping in Erma for the week after Labor Day, you'll have summer weather at off-peak rates.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before, will I actually figure it out?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV is the most common situation on RVezy. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, the generator, slide-outs, the bathroom, and basic driving tips. They share their phone number so you can text mid-trip if anything comes up. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup, they handle every connection at your Cape May campsite. RVezy also has a 24/7 support team and a Help Center packed with how-to videos. Pro tip: for a stress-free first motorhome rental in Erma, pick a Class C under 28 feet or a travel trailer that's already delivered to your campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, just one phone call and help is on the way, whether you're at a campsite in Erma, parked at Cape May Lighthouse, or pulled over on the Garden State Parkway. Coverage includes flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a direct resource, most respond within minutes to texts about minor questions like resetting a tripped GFCI outlet. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it makes any roadside call faster.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Erma RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard. Most hosts in Erma happily allow trips throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, popular routes include Cape May to the Pocono Mountains (3 hours), the Finger Lakes (6 hours), Acadia National Park (10 hours), and Shenandoah National Park (4.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance documentation, so message the host directly through the listing if you're planning a trip to Niagara Falls or Quebec. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance doesn't extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host before booking, they'll often share favorite stops they've personally tested.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Erma RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward once you know the ballpark. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, Class A coaches run 7 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 12 MPG. New Jersey gas prices hover near the national average, and remember, NJ is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your gas for you (no tipping required, it's the law). For a typical 4-day Cape May loop with day trips to Wildwood and Ocean City, plan on $90 to $200 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: the Wawa on Route 9 in Rio Grande, 4 miles from Erma, is the locals' go-to for clean pumps and cheap coffee.
nj.gov/oag/newsreleases16/pr20160726a.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Erma?
For summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), reserve 4 to 6 months ahead, Cape May County's campgrounds are some of the most in-demand on the entire East Coast. Private parks like Seashore Campsites, Beachcomber, and Holly Shores book directly through their websites and often open the next season's calendar in January. For state parks, Belleplain State Forest (30 minutes north) uses the New Jersey state park reservation system and opens bookings 6 months in advance to the day. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much easier, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually fine. Pro tip: if you strike out on a summer Saturday, book Sunday through Thursday, you'll save 20 to 30% and have the pools to yourself.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Erma?
Driving an RV around Erma is genuinely manageable, the area is flat, well-signed, and built for summer beach traffic. The Garden State Parkway ends just north of Erma at Exit 0 in Cape May, so you're never far from a main artery. Stick to Route 9 and Route 109 for RV-friendly routes, and avoid Cape May's narrow Victorian downtown streets (Washington Street Mall is pedestrian-only anyway). Summer Saturday traffic on the Parkway between 10 AM and 2 PM can be slow, so plan to arrive Friday night or before 9 AM Saturday. Watch for low overpasses on smaller back roads, including a 10'6" clearance on Sunset Boulevard. Pro tip: use the Garmin RV navigator or CoPilot RV app, both route you around height and weight restrictions automatically.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/restrictions.shtmWhat amenities do campgrounds near Erma offer?
Cape May County campgrounds are loaded, most go well beyond basics. Expect full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer) at private parks like Seashore Campsites and Beachcomber, plus pools, mini-golf, playgrounds, camp stores, and free WiFi. Dump stations and potable water fills are standard, and many parks offer propane refills on-site. For state-run sites at Belleplain State Forest, you'll find electric hookups at most loops, modern bathhouses, and a dump station near the entrance. If you need to dump or fill water mid-trip, the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority and several campgrounds offer day-use dump services for $10 to $20. Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground, summer demand can drop pressure at fill stations during peak hours.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belleplainstateforest.htmlWhat's inside the RVs I'll find in Erma?
You'll feel right at home, RVs on RVezy come fully equipped for Cape May beach life. Expect a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa that converts to extra sleeping, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most listings include air conditioning (critical for humid Jersey Shore summers), a furnace, a TV, and many offer WiFi hotspots or onboard generators for boondocking. Family-friendly RVs sleep 4 to 8 with proper seatbelts for travel. Linens, towels, and kitchen kits are sometimes included or available as add-ons. Pro tip: filter by "Sleeps" count and check the photos for bunk beds, perfect for a family RV trip to Erma with kids who want their own space.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Erma offer some fantastic add-ons that make your trip easier. Common options include beach gear packages (chairs, umbrellas, coolers), bike rentals, outdoor grills, kayaks, generators, linens and kitchen kits, and even pre-stocked groceries. Fees range from $10 to $75 per item or as flat trip-long packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location near Erma, Rio Grande, or Cape May Court House, but many offer delivery within 25 to 50 miles. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 miles per night included on motorhomes with $0.35 to $0.55 per extra mile, while travel trailers often come with unlimited mileage since you're towing. Pro tip: ask about a "return clean" add-on (usually $50 to $100), it's worth it after a sandy beach week.
visitnj.org/article/cape-may-beach-guideHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, no cash, no awkward transfers with strangers. You pay securely online when you book using a credit or debit card, and the total includes the nightly rate, service fee, protection plan, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not actually charged, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues, take timestamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and follow the mileage policy. Pro tip: keep the dump station receipt, it's often required if a dump fee is part of the agreement.
