Campgrounds near Florence, New Jersey

Florence sits along the Delaware River in Burlington County, roughly halfway between Trenton and Philadelphia. The location gives RV travelers access to two very different camping landscapes within an hour's drive: the hilly, historic Delaware Valley to the north and the flat, sandy Pine Barrens to the south and east. Most public camping in the area runs through the New Jersey State Park Service. Washington Crossing State Park, upriver near Titusville, sits on the historic Revolutionary War landscape and is listed among the state parks with camping facilities. To the south, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest and the Atsion Recreational Area inside Wharton State Forest anchor camping in the Pinelands, with tent and trailer sites, shelters, and cabins near lakes and cedar swamps. Private options fill the gaps. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort caters to larger rigs and cabin renters, and Timberland Lake Campground offers a lake-focused family setting.

Things to do near Florence

Water, trails, and history dominate the itinerary. The Delaware River corridor at Washington Crossing State Park offers hiking, a visitor center focused on Revolutionary War history, and access to the river for paddling and fishing. In the Pine Barrens, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest has more than 25 miles of marked trails, including a segment of the roughly 50-mile Batona Trail, plus fishing at Pakim Pond and access to the historic cranberry and blueberry village of Whitesbog. Atsion Recreational Area centers on Atsion Lake, with a lifeguarded swim beach in summer, canoe and kayak launches, an accessible playground, two nature trails, and guided weekend tours of the 1826 Atsion Mansion. Six Flags Great Adventure sits within easy driving distance, useful for families splitting time between campground stays and theme-park days.

winter

The prime RV window in this part of New Jersey runs from late April through October. Spring brings mild days and manageable bug pressure before mosquitoes and ticks build up in the Pinelands. Fall is the strongest overall season: comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, fewer insects, and hardwood color that peaks in mid to late October. Summer is peak family season. Atsion Lake's swim beach only operates when lifeguards are on duty, and weekend sites at state forest campgrounds often fill well in advance. Expect heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is quiet. Atsion campsites and the trailer sanitary station are listed as open year-round, and Brendan T. Byrne keeps three shelters with wood-burning stoves available through the cold months, but many amenities close and site availability varies. Verify status with the park before booking a cold-weather trip.

We had a great experience with RV Cozy Camper. The camper truly lived up to its name — it was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided, and the layout made the space feel welcoming and functional. It was easy to tow and set up, which helped take a lot of stress out of the trip. The attention to detail really showed and made us feel comfortable right away. Communication was smooth and helpful, and any questions we had were answered promptly. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we would absolutely recommend RV Cozy Camper to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable camping option. We would happily use RV Cozy Camper again for future trips!

We had a family reunion out in West Virginia the first week in August. We decided to rent an RV this how I found Rod the owner of the RV. He was very polite and up front we us the whole time. The only down fall is the no pet rule. But we definitely rent from him next year.

We had a blast on our family road trip. "Archie" was easy to drive, clean and comfortable for my family of 3, with room to spare. Rod is a really nice guy and responded quickly to any question we had. We would love to do it again soon

How to book Florence campgrounds

Reservations for New Jersey State Park Service campgrounds, including Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Wharton State Forest's Atsion Family Campground, and Washington Crossing State Park, go through the state portal at camping.nj.gov. Bookings can be made from about 24 hours ahead up to 11 months in advance, with a two-night minimum on most sites. Pet-friendly sites at Atsion and Byrne require a pet registration form and current rabies documentation at check-in, with an additional per-night fee. Cabin inventory at Atsion Lake is limited to nine units and books out quickly for summer weekends. Private campgrounds such as Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort and Timberland Lake Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone.

What to expect near Florence

State forest campgrounds in this region are rustic rather than resort-style. Sites at Atsion and Brendan T. Byrne come with a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern hook, with flush toilets, showers, and potable water within walking distance, but no individual water, sewer, or electric hookups. A dump station is available at Atsion. Trailer length is capped at 22 feet at both Atsion and other Wharton campgrounds. The Pine Barrens setting means sandy soil, flat terrain, a pitch pine and oak canopy, and access roads that are often unpaved but passable in most vehicles. Cell service can be patchy inside the forest. Black bears are present in New Jersey, so store food in the vehicle. Private resorts like Crystal Springs offer full RV hookups and additional amenities, with stricter check-in procedures.
