Campgrounds near Fort Dix, New Jersey
Fort Dix sits in Burlington County in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, placing RV renters within a short drive of both state-run forest campgrounds and private RV resorts. The surrounding Pinelands National Reserve covers a vast band of pitch pine, sandy soils, and slow tea-colored rivers, and it is recognized as a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve.
The closest public option is Brendan T Byrne State Forest, which offers eighty-two tent and trailer sites in a quiet Pine Barrens setting with fire rings, picnic tables, and lantern hooks at each site. To the south, Atsion Recreational Area within Wharton State Forest offers fifty tent and trailer sites next to Atsion Lake, with a trailer sanitary station and potable water within walking distance.
Private parks widen the choices for RV renters. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort in Cream Ridge, Timberland Lake Campground, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground sit within a short drive north and east of the base, with full hookups, cabins, and family amenities not typically found in the state forests.
Things to do near Fort Dix
The Pine Barrens define the outdoor menu. The Batona Trail threads through Brendan T Byrne State Forest and Wharton State Forest, connecting cedar swamps, cranberry bogs, and pitch pine uplands. Paved and sandy back roads around Chatsworth are popular with cyclists, and Whitesbog Village preserves the site where the first cultivated highbush blueberry was developed by Elizabeth White in 1911.
Atsion Lake anchors summer plans with a guarded swimming beach, canoe and kayak launches, and rentals available from Pinelands Adventures a short distance down Route 206. History stops include the Atsion Mansion, built in 1826, and Batsto Village on the far side of Wharton State Forest.
Families traveling with an RV often pair Pine Barrens days with Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor, which sit a short drive north of Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort.

The core camping season across the state forests runs from spring through late fall, and reservations peak from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Atsion campsites are listed as open year-round, but swimming in Atsion Lake is only permitted in summer when lifeguards are present, and the trailer sanitary station at Atsion is open April 1 through October 31.
Brendan T Byrne State Forest campsites are open year-round unless otherwise posted, but bookings run heavy in summer and during October foliage weekends. Third-party trackers frequently show the campground as fully reserved on those dates, so shoulder-season midweek stays are the easiest to secure.
Winter brings cold nights and occasional snow. Private parks such as Crystal Springs, Timberland Lake, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground follow their own seasonal calendars, so RV renters should confirm open dates and hookup availability directly with each park before booking a shoulder-season trip.

Jacek was amazing with communication and having the advantages being able to have the RV delivered and set up was amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. The camper was super clean, and comfortable. We had a great time.

How to book a site
New Jersey state forest sites, including Brendan T Byrne State Forest and Atsion within Wharton State Forest, are reserved online through camping.nj.gov, the state's central reservation portal. Reservations can be made from two days up to one year in advance, with a two-night minimum and a maximum stay of fourteen days.
Book popular summer weekends and October foliage dates as early as possible. Trailer size at Atsion is capped at twenty-two feet, so larger rentals should route to Brendan T Byrne or to a private park.
Private options including Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, Timberland Lake Campground, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground are booked directly through each park's own website or phone line. Pet-friendly sites in the state forests are limited to designated loops, and pets must be registered at check-in.
What to expect on site
State forest camping in this area is rustic by design. Brendan T Byrne sites include fire rings, picnic tables, and lantern hooks in a flat, sandy pine setting, with flush toilets and showers within walking distance. Atsion Family Campground offers similar sites next to the lake, with potable water, flush toilets, and showers within walking distance, plus a dump station for trailers.
Hookups are not available at the state forest campgrounds, so RV renters relying on power, water, and sewer connections should plan on Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, Timberland Lake Campground, or Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground. Cell service in the deeper Pine Barrens can be spotty, and firewood availability at park offices is tied to limited daytime hours.

It's a great option for first-time renters who'd rather skip the tow-vehicle logistics and jump right into vacation mode.

weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Fort Dix is genuinely doable, and RVezy hosts make it easy. Every booking includes a hands-on walkthrough at pickup where your host shows you how to operate the slide-outs, hookups, water systems, generator, and dump valves, plus answers any questions. You can also message hosts before booking to discuss your comfort level, and they'll often recommend a beginner-friendly rig like a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer. Roads around Fort Dix are well-marked and mostly flat, which is great for building confidence. Pro tip: do a short practice drive in the campground before heading onto the Turnpike.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never alone on a Fort Dix RV rental. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Route 206, a dead battery at a Pine Barrens campground, or a mechanical issue near the Garden State Parkway, help is just one call away. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fort Dix RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Fort Dix into other states is one of the best parts of the location. You're a short drive from Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Maryland, and many RVezy hosts allow multi-state travel. Confirm with your host before booking so they can note your route. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts (with insurance adjustments), so message the listing owner directly if you're planning a cross-border trip to Niagara Falls or Montreal. Travel into Mexico is not permitted under RVezy's insurance coverage. Pro tip: popular routes from Fort Dix include the Acadia loop, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Outer Banks run.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Fort Dix RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for your Fort Dix RV trip is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A motorhomes land around 8 to 10 MPG. New Jersey gas prices usually sit near or slightly above the national average, and a key local quirk: New Jersey is a full-service state, so attendants pump your gas at every station. Diesel pumps are widely available along the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 295. Pro tip: use apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest stops along Route 206 and the Parkway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fort Dix?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book your campground near Fort Dix as soon as you lock in your RV, ideally three to six months out. New Jersey state parks like Brendan T. Byrne, Wharton, and Bass River are reserved through the official NJ State Park Reservation system, and prime sites disappear fast for July and August. Private campgrounds like Timberlane and Tip Tam often open bookings even further ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, three to four weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek Sunday-through-Thursday stays open up more availability and often save you 20 to 30 percent on nightly rates.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Fort Dix?
Driving an RV around Fort Dix is friendlier than most metro areas. The terrain is flat, roads are well-paved, and major arteries like Route 206, Route 38, and Interstate 295 give you easy access without tight mountain switchbacks. That said, the Garden State Parkway has commercial vehicle restrictions in some sections, so confirm your rig is allowed before towing on it, and steer clear of New York City and Philadelphia rush hour if possible. Many bridges and parkways in New Jersey have height and length limits, so plan routes using an RV-specific GPS or app like RV Trip Wizard. Pro tip: the New Jersey Turnpike has dedicated truck lanes that are perfect for big rigs to settle in.

Campgrounds near Fort Dix range from rustic state forest sites to full-service resorts, so you can pick the comfort level you want. State parks like Brendan T. Byrne and Wharton typically offer electric hookups, potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and centralized dump stations. Private parks like Tip Tam and Timberlane add full water, sewer, and electric hookups at each site, plus pools, playgrounds, laundry, and Wi-Fi at many. Most campgrounds have a dump station near the exit, and freshwater fill stations are usually right at the registration office. You'll pay the trip total at booking using a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is held separately (typically a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the rig) before pickup. The deposit is released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at both pickup and drop-off, snap photos of any existing scratches or dings, and return the rig with the fuel and propane levels you started with.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Fort Dix for a winter trip?
Yes, winter RV rental in Fort Dix is possible for adventurous travelers. While many New Jersey campgrounds close from late November through March, some private parks and parts of Wharton State Forest stay open year-round for self-contained rigs. Look for RVezy listings with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces if you're traveling December through February, when overnight temperatures can drop into the teens. Message hosts directly to confirm cold-weather readiness and ask about shore power compatibility. Pro tip: a winter Pine Barrens trip is peaceful, with snow-dusted pitch pines, empty trails, and no mosquitoes. Pack extra propane and you've got a cozy cabin on wheels.
