Campgrounds near Franklin Township
Franklin Township sits in Somerset County in central New Jersey, roughly equidistant from Princeton, New Brunswick, and the Jersey Shore. The area itself is suburban and agricultural, so RV renters typically base out of campgrounds within a 30 to 60 minute drive rather than in the township proper. Options range from county-run parks in Monmouth County to private RV resorts and family campgrounds farther south and west.
Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township is the closest full-service public option, operated by the Monmouth County Park System on the northern fringe of the Pine Barrens. Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson offers full hookups two miles west of Six Flags Great Adventure, while Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort caters to travelers wanting cabins and RV sites. Pine Cone Campgrounds serves the same central-NJ corridor.
Washington Crossing State Park along the Delaware River rounds out the list, though its campsites are structured for organized groups rather than drop-in RV stays.
Things to do near Franklin Township
Six Flags Great Adventure is the region's biggest family draw, and Timberland Lake Campground sits two miles west of the park, alongside the Adventure Sports Complex and The Dome. Turkey Swamp Park adds a 17-acre lake with canoe, kayak, rowboat, and paddleboat rentals, more than eight miles of multiuse trails, four playgrounds, and open playfields for families staying longer than a weekend.
The Delaware River corridor around Washington Crossing State Park offers paddling, fishing, and 13 miles of moderate hiking trails, plus Revolutionary War history at the site of Washington's 1776 crossing. Princeton, New Brunswick, and the Jersey Shore beaches at Asbury Park and Long Branch are all reachable as day trips, giving RV renters a mix of theme-park, historic, and coastal options within about an hour's drive.

Camping season in central New Jersey is firmly warm-weather. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground operates April 1 through November 15, with weekend and holiday activities offered on site from May through September. The park itself stays open year-round for day use, but water service and full amenities generally track the mid-April to mid-November window. Private campgrounds like Timberland Lake and Crystal Springs run similar warm-season schedules built around the pool and Six Flags calendar.
Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly, especially sites near Six Flags and cabins with air conditioning. Booking well ahead is standard.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site selection, though nighttime temperatures can drop into the 30s and 40s in April and late October. Winter camping is limited: Washington Crossing State Park's campgrounds are currently closed until further notice, and most private parks close or run reduced service from late November through March.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book
Turkey Swamp Park takes reservations through the Monmouth County Park System's online system or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after noon. Reservations are accepted after January 1 for the coming season and require at least two nights on Friday through Sunday, with three nights on holiday weekends. Of 64 wooded sites, 52 are reservable and 12 are held first-come, first-served.
Washington Crossing State Park uses the state's camping.nj.gov portal, but its group campsites in the Phillips Farm area are currently closed until further notice, so campers should confirm status with the park before planning.
Timberland Lake Campground, Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, and Pine Cone Campgrounds each handle their own reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Summer weekends often require booking several weeks or months out.
What to expect on site
Public campgrounds in this part of New Jersey run leaner than private RV resorts. Turkey Swamp Park offers pull-through wooded sites for tents, trailers, and motorhomes up to 40 feet with electrical service, drinking water, modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry, a dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and alcohol is prohibited on county park land.
Washington Crossing State Park's group sites are primitive: fire rings, picnic tables, and composting toilets, with no hookups and no pets allowed. It is not set up for individual RV stays.
Private parks like Timberland Lake offer full hookups with 50-amp service, sewer, water, and cable, plus an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a five-acre lake, mini-golf, hayrides, and themed weekend events. Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort leans toward furnished cabins and RV sites.
