Campgrounds and RV parks near Green Knoll, NJ

Water access drives much of the area's appeal. Spruce Run State Recreational Area is the third-largest reservoir in New Jersey, drawing anglers for bass, pike, trout, catfish, and other stocked species, plus kayak and sailboat access around the peninsula. The reservoir is also open for swimming and boating in season. Hikers have options at every scale. Voorhees State Park has eleven multi-use trails suitable for a wide range of abilities, including biking and mountain biking, traversing 9 miles of the park through deciduous forest, CCC pine plantations and alongside the Willoughby Brook. Stephens State Park adds a two-mile section of the Highlands Trail and trout fishing on the Musconetcong River, which is stocked each spring with brown, rainbow, and brook trout. After dark, the New Jersey Astronomical Association operates an observatory at Voorhees with a 26-inch Newtonian reflector, one of the largest privately owned telescopes in the state, with public programs offered year round.

Camping windows at the state parks are tight. Spruce Run State Recreational Area, Voorhees State Park, and Stephens State Park all operate their campgrounds from April 1 through October 31. Spruce Run offers 60 tent and trailer sites plus 7 trailer-only sites with water and electric hookups and three shelters. Outside that window, day use is still available but overnight stays at these parks are not. Summer is the busiest stretch. Reservoir swimming, boating, and family camping fill sites at Spruce Run on weekends, and holiday weekends book out well in advance. Spring and fall bring mild temperatures, active trout stocking, and lighter crowds, making shoulder-season trips a strong option for RV travelers who want easier reservations. Winter shifts the recreation mix. During the winter months, many visitors go sledding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice sailing at Spruce Run, though the campgrounds themselves are closed. Snow and ice can affect road access, so travelers heading in during the cold months should check park conditions before arrival.

The state park campgrounds run rustic by design. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in New Jersey state park campgrounds, smoking is prohibited except inside a personal vehicle, and quiet hours are enforced overnight. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire ring, and modern restrooms with showers are within walking distance at Spruce Run. Rig size matters here. Stephens is best for smaller trailers and vans, while Spruce Run's hookup loop and larger tent-and-trailer sites sit on a peninsula in the reservoir with water on multiple sides. Most state park sites are dry, so plan on tank capacity or use the on-site dump station. Bring bug spray in warmer months, firewood from local sources to comply with quarantine rules, and layers for cool evenings even in summer. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Route 31 and Route 78 corridors but can thin inside wooded loops.
