Camping near Hewitt, New Jersey
Hewitt sits in the northern New Jersey Highlands in Passaic County, tucked between Greenwood Lake, the Wanaque Reservoir, and the New York state line. The area is a working landscape of forested ridges, glacial lakes, and Appalachian Trail crossings, with campgrounds ranging from primitive walk-in sites to full-hookup RV resorts.
Wawayanda State Park, just north of Hewitt, consists of over 60 miles of well marked trails, and a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail follows the varied terrain of the park, and it functions as the main state-run campground in the immediate area. West across the New York border, the Beaver Pond Campground is located just 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge within Harriman State Park, giving RV travelers a second large public option within an hour's drive.
Private RV parks fill the gap for travelers who need hookups. Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm in Sussex, New Jersey, both offer full-service sites within a short drive of Hewitt, while Camp Wyanokie serves as a rustic backcountry option adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest.
Things to do around Hewitt
Hiking dominates the local recreation calendar. Norvin Green State Forest sits directly beside Camp Wyanokie, with rocky summits like Wyanokie High Point offering wide views across the Highlands and toward the New York City skyline on clear days. Wawayanda State Park adds lake access: a boat rental facility and launching ramp are located near the beach and picnic areas, canoes, rowboats with or without electric motors and paddleboats may be rented at Wawayanda Lake, privately owned water craft may be launched, sailboats and sailboards are permitted, and gasoline motors are not permitted.
At Harriman State Park, nearby recreation areas include Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, Rockland Lake State Park, Bear Mountain State Park, and Lake Tiorati Beach and Lake Welch Beach, both swimming facilities in Harriman State Park. Families staying at Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm can add Old Fashioned Wagon Hayrides and Baby Animal Petting every weekend throughout the summer season, plus special events like Cow Milking, Sheep Shearing and Pig Chases.

The camping season in this corner of the Highlands is tightly framed by weather and by park operating windows. Wawayanda State Park camping is open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park runs on a similar April to October schedule. Camp Wyanokie is a warm-weather rustic property, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm is open mid April to mid October.
Black Bear Campground is the exception. It sits in scenic Orange County just 60 miles from Times Square, with full hook-up sites, 50-amp service, back-in and pull-thru sites, is family and pet friendly, does not allow tent camping, adds an in-season fishing pond, planned activities, and mini-golf, and operates year round. That makes it the practical choice for shoulder-season and winter RV trips.
Summer weekends fill fast at the state parks. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, while spring can be muddy on trails after snowmelt from the higher elevations.

Absolutely amazing renter. The RV had everything we needed and they were very accommodating with our extension.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Hewitt
For Wawayanda State Park, online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov through the state park service. Group sites have separate rules, and these sites require a minimum of seven persons, so smaller parties should book individual sites.
For Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites opening at that window at 8AM Monday to Friday and 9AM on weekends between March 15 and Labor Day, and at 9AM daily the rest of the year. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites.
Black Bear Campground currently books by phone through its office, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm accepts reservations through its Sun Outdoors website and third-party platforms.
What to expect on the ground
Hookup expectations vary widely between the public parks and the private RV resorts. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch.
Wawayanda is even more basic: water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. By contrast, at Black Bear all sites are full hookup, providing water, sewer, and electric connections, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm offers outdoor activities including a fishing lake, outdoor pool, and a jump pillow alongside its full-hookup RV sites.
Bear activity is common in the Highlands. There will be bear activity in this area during your stay, and bear habitat guidelines will be provided that must be followed at all times, and the same practices apply across the region.
