Camping near Highlands, New Jersey
Highlands sits at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore, directly across the bay from the Sandy Hook peninsula and roughly an hour from New York City by car or ferry. The area combines Atlantic beaches, salt marshes, and forested state parks, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want coastal recreation without leaving the New York metro region.
Overnight options near Highlands are limited but varied. Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area sits across the bay in Brooklyn as part of the same federal park unit that manages Sandy Hook, though its camping operations have shifted in recent seasons and travelers should verify current status before booking. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers full-hookup urban RV sites with skyline views. To the south, Allaire State Park, Turkey Swamp Park, and Pine Cone Campgrounds provide wooded inland camping within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Because Highlands itself is a small borough with no in-town RV park, most travelers stage at one of these nearby campgrounds and day-trip into Sandy Hook, Twin Lights, and the surrounding Monmouth County parks.
Things to do around Highlands
Sandy Hook is the primary draw. The peninsula offers ocean and bay swimming beaches, a paved multi-use path, historic Fort Hancock, and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which is the country's oldest continuously working lighthouse. Guided lighthouse tours typically run in the warmer months, though schedules vary by staff availability.
In town, Twin Lights sits atop the Navesink Highlands, a historic site that has stood as a sentinel over the coastal waters of northern New Jersey since 1828. Nearby, Mount Mitchill in Atlantic Highlands is often cited as one of the highest natural points on the U.S. Atlantic seaboard, with sweeping views of Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, and the New York skyline.
Active options include hiking and mountain biking at Hartshorne Woods, kayaking on the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers, and the Seastreak ferry from Highlands to Manhattan for a car-free day in the city.

The camping season along this stretch of the New Jersey coast runs roughly from spring through fall. Allaire State Park is open from April 1 through December 15, though family campsites are currently closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility, with group camping still operating on that schedule. Gateway National Recreation Area facilities vary by season, and Camp Gateway Sandy Hook operates in the warm months, with recent seasons running roughly May through summer.
June through August is peak season. Ocean water reaches swimmable temperatures, ferry service to New York runs on its full schedule, and campgrounds fill on summer weekends and holidays. Booking early is essential, since sites and shelters at popular parks fill quickly for summer and holiday weekends.
Shoulder seasons in May and September through October offer cooler weather, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Late summer and early fall coincide with the Atlantic hurricane season, and coastal parks may close temporarily when tropical systems threaten the Jersey Shore.

Jacek was amazing with communication and having the advantages being able to have the RV delivered and set up was amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. The camper was super clean, and comfortable. We had a great time.

How to book campgrounds near Highlands
Reservation systems vary by campground operator. Camp Gateway Sandy Hook within Gateway National Recreation Area can be booked up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and no walk-ups are allowed. The campground accommodates tent camping only, and campers must walk their gear up to a quarter mile from the parking area, so RV travelers typically park the rig elsewhere and use Sandy Hook as a day trip.
For New Jersey state parks including Allaire, online reservations are handled through the state's NJ Outdoors portal at nj.gov, with a booking window several months out. Turkey Swamp Park is operated by Monmouth County Parks and uses the county's own reservation system. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Pine Cone Campgrounds are privately operated and take bookings directly through their websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, reserve as far ahead as the system allows.
What to expect on the ground
Facilities range widely. Liberty Harbor RV Park is the closest true full-hookup option for larger rigs, offering water, electric, and sewer within sight of the Manhattan skyline. Inland state and county parks generally provide more rustic sites with fire rings, picnic tables, potable water, and shower buildings, but no site hookups. Allaire State Park's campground has 45 campsites plus 10 shelters, with drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and an RV dump station open mid-April through mid-October, and sites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs.
RVers should expect coastal traffic on Route 36 during summer weekends, limited big-rig maneuvering room in downtown Highlands, and mosquitoes and greenhead flies in salt marsh areas from June through August. Cell coverage is strong throughout the region. Beach parking at Sandy Hook requires a separate seasonal fee from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and this fee is not covered by the standard National Park pass.
