Campgrounds near Hillsborough, New Jersey
Hillsborough sits in central New Jersey's Somerset County, within an easy drive of several state-run campgrounds in the surrounding Hunterdon and Mercer County hills. The closest overnight options are managed by the New Jersey State Park Service, which handles family, group, and shelter site reservations through a single online portal at camping.nj.gov.
Voorhees State Park, located in the wooded hills of northern Hunterdon County, offers family campsites, shelters, and group campsites available from April 1 through October 31. Voorhees and its campgrounds are administered by the Spruce Run Recreation Area park office. Spruce Run itself, set among the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, is popular for picnicking, camping, boating, fishing, and year-round outdoor recreation on a large reservoir.
Washington Crossing State Park, along the Delaware River south of Hillsborough, offers group tent camping in a historic setting, though group campsites have been closed in recent seasons and travelers should confirm current status before booking. Private options such as Goodland Country Club and Spa and Fla-Net Park round out the mix for RV travelers looking for hookups or resort-style amenities.
Things to do near Hillsborough
Spruce Run Recreation Area draws visitors for picnicking, boating, and fishing on its large reservoir. The reservoir covers 1,290 acres with 15 miles of shoreline for recreation, and the park is the third-largest reservoir in the state. The swim area has been closed due to recurring harmful algal blooms, so visitors should check current advisories before planning water activities.
At Voorhees State Park, hikers can explore seven multi-use trails and stargazers can visit the observatory built by the New Jersey Astronomical Association. The 26-inch reflector telescope is one of the largest privately owned telescopes in New Jersey, and the public is invited to explore the night sky at programs offered year round by the NJAA.
Washington Crossing State Park marks the site of General George Washington's Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River in 1776, with 13 miles of trails, a visitor center museum, the Johnson Ferry House, and living history programs.

Note that the Washington Crossing Bridge has a 3-ton limit and is not passable by buses, large trucks, or campers; travelers from Pennsylvania must take the Route 202 or I-295 bridges into New Jersey.
