Camping near Hopewell, New Jersey
Hopewell sits in central New Jersey between the Delaware River and the Sourland Mountain region, roughly eight miles north of Trenton and within an hour of Philadelphia. The area gives RV travelers access to a mix of state parks, reservoir recreation areas, and privately run campgrounds, most within a 30 to 45 minute drive of town.
The closest option, Washington Crossing State Park, marks the site of General George Washington's 1776 Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River, just eight miles north of Trenton. West of Hopewell, Voorhees State Park and Spruce Run State Recreational Area sit in the Hunterdon County highlands and offer more traditional drive-in camping. Mountainview Campground and Beaver Valley Campgrounds round out the nearby private options for travelers who want full hookups.
The terrain is rolling rather than mountainous, roads are paved and RV-friendly, and most sites are reachable without narrow forest-service detours. Expect a rural-suburban blend of farmland, river access, and small historic towns like Lambertville and New Hope within easy day-trip range.
Things to do around Hopewell
The Delaware River is the main draw. Paddlers, tubers, and anglers put in along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania banks, and the towpath along the old Delaware and Raritan Canal offers flat, family-friendly cycling and walking for miles in either direction. Spruce Run State Recreational Area adds a large reservoir with swimming, boat rentals, and bass fishing.
History is the other core attraction. Washington Crossing State Park has interpretive sites tied to the Revolutionary War crossing, along with day-use trails through the surrounding woodlands. Voorhees State Park is home to the Paul Robinson Observatory, which hosts public sky-watch programs run by the New Jersey Astronomical Association.
Hopewell Borough itself has walkable shops and restaurants, and Princeton is a 20-minute drive for museums, gardens, and university tours.

Most campgrounds in the Hopewell area run a spring-through-fall season rather than year-round. Voorhees State Park and other New Jersey state campgrounds typically operate from April 1 through October 31, which is the reliable window for full services, warm nights, and open bathhouses. July and August are the busiest and most humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; weekends book out well in advance at reservoir parks like Spruce Run.
Spring brings cooler nights, higher river flows, and fewer crowds, but bugs pick up sharply by late May. Fall is often the best RV season: comfortable daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and strong foliage color from mid-October into early November across the Sourland ridge and Delaware Valley.
Winter camping options are limited. Campgrounds at Washington Crossing State Park are closed until further notice, and other state facilities typically close their loops after October. Travelers arriving between November and March should confirm operating status directly with each park before booking travel.

We had a family reunion out in West Virginia the first week in August. We decided to rent an RV this how I found Rod the owner of the RV. He was very polite and up front we us the whole time. The only down fall is the no pet rule. But we definitely rent from him next year.

We had a blast on our family road trip. "Archie" was easy to drive, clean and comfortable for my family of 3, with room to spare. Rod is a really nice guy and responded quickly to any question we had. We would love to do it again soon

How to book campsites near Hopewell
New Jersey state park sites, including Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run State Recreational Area, and Washington Crossing State Park, are reserved through the state's central system at camping.nj.gov. Reservations are accepted up to 11 months in advance. Accounts are free, and the system shows site type, allowed trailer length, and hookup availability before checkout. Note that Washington Crossing campgrounds are currently closed until further notice.
Demand is heaviest for summer weekends at Spruce Run, where waterfront and reservoir-view sites go first. Booking several weeks ahead is a safe target for July and August; shoulder-season dates in May, September, and October are usually available closer in.
Private campgrounds such as Mountainview Campground and Beaver Valley Campgrounds book directly through their own websites or by phone. For large RVs, confirm site length, hookup amperage, and low-clearance approaches when reserving.
What to expect on site
State park campgrounds in this region tend toward wooded, gravel or grass sites with picnic tables and fire rings. Hookups are limited: Voorhees, for example, has no electric or water hookups at its family sites, though a sanitary dump station is available to Voorhees campers at Spruce Run. Plan on tank capacity and generator hours accordingly. Bathhouses with flush toilets and showers are standard at drive-in state park loops during the operating season.
Group camping at Washington Crossing accommodates organized groups and scout troops through a reservation system, with tent-only sites that feature fire rings and basic amenities but no hookups. That park is not a general RV destination.
Private campgrounds nearby generally offer full hookups and additional amenities. Cell coverage across the region is reliable, and grocery stores, propane, and dump stations are easy to find in Flemington, Pennington, and Lambertville.
