Camping in the Kinnelon area follows a clear seasonal rhythm. State-park tent camping runs on a warm-weather calendar, with the Wawayanda campground operating roughly April through October. Panther Lake Camping Resort runs from April 15 to October 31, and most nearby private lake campgrounds follow a similar spring-to-fall window. Summer is peak season. School vacation, warm lake temperatures, and easy access from the New York metro drive weekend demand, so full-hookup sites at lake resorts fill weeks ahead for holidays. Spring and fall offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and reliable trail conditions, with fall foliage typically peaking in mid to late October in the Highlands. Winter narrows the options considerably. Black Bear Campground operates year-round with heated water hookups, making it one of the few off-season options within easy reach. At an elevation of 1,140 feet above sea level, Wawayanda State Park receives significant snow accumulations in winter, and designated trails are open to cross-country skiing.

Expect wooded, hilly terrain and a mix of site styles. Private RV parks in the corridor lean toward full hookups on grass or gravel pads. Black Bear Campground welcomes big rigs on paved roads, with roughly 154 full-hookup sites and both back-in and pull-through options. The majority of sites at Panther Lake Camping Resort house seasonal residents, creating a neighborhood atmosphere where permanent RVs and cottages line the roads. State-park sites at Wawayanda are more basic, with dirt or grass tent pads, limited shade at some sites, and no showers within walking distance of every camping area. Cell service is inconsistent across the Highlands, so downloading maps and reservations before arrival is worthwhile. Black bears live in these forests. Do not approach or feed them, and store food inside a hard-sided vehicle or RV overnight.
