Campgrounds near Lake Mohawk, New Jersey
Lake Mohawk sits in Sussex County in the Skylands region of northern New Jersey, roughly 50 miles from New York City. The area is a practical base for RV travelers because it combines private RV resorts, county-area campgrounds, and a state park within a short drive, and it sits close to the Kittatinny Ridge, the Appalachian Trail corridor, and the Delaware Water Gap.
Private resorts in the surrounding townships handle most RV traffic. Panther Lake Camping Resort offers 400+ RV sites, cabin rentals, and glamping on 160 wooded acres centered on a 45-acre lake, while The Great Divide Campground, LLC and Kymers Camping Resort round out the private options with family-oriented sites and hookups. Fla-Net Park is a smaller local campground useful for shorter stays.
For state-managed camping, Swartswood State Park is the closest option. Established in 1914, it was New Jersey's first state park, set on the state's third-largest natural freshwater lake. It suits travelers who want a quieter, lake-focused stay rather than resort amenities.
Things to do near Lake Mohawk
Water recreation dominates the area. Swartswood Lake permits only electric motors, so expect views of sailboats, canoes, and kayaks on the still waters of the 519-acre natural glacial lake. Panther Lake Camping Resort adds on-site swimming, fishing, and boat rentals for guests who want everything at the campsite.
On land, the region has hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Trails cross the park for hiking and birding, and bald eagles are among the wildlife seen around the lake. The nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area extends options with longer trails and river access.
Resort-style campgrounds add structured activities for families. Panther Lake Camping Resort offers a swimming pool, a hot tub, miniature golf, an arcade, horseshoes, basketball, pickleball and tennis courts, shuffleboard, a pavilion, and planned activities through the season.

The camping season in this part of New Jersey follows state park and private resort calendars. At Swartswood State Park, 21 campsites are open year-round, while the remainder operate April through October. Private resorts run on a shoulder-to-shoulder schedule; Panther Lake Camping Resort operates April 15 through October 31. Winter RV camping in the immediate Lake Mohawk area is limited, so travelers arriving between late fall and early spring should plan on off-season closures at most private grounds.
Summer is the peak booking window. School vacation, warm lake temperatures, and NYC-metro demand drive high occupancy from late June through Labor Day, and holiday weekends fill first. Weekday arrivals see more availability than Friday check-ins.
Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel. Foliage color builds through October across Sussex County, humidity drops, and biting insects fade. Spring is variable: April can be cold and wet, while May typically brings mild days that pair well with paddling and hiking before summer crowds arrive.

Absolutely amazing renter. The RV had everything we needed and they were very accommodating with our extension.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Lake Mohawk
State park sites use New Jersey's central reservation system. Online reservations for Swartswood State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov up to 11 months in advance of the check-in date. Sites at Swartswood are limited and lake-adjacent stays book out early for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as the window opens.
Private resorts book directly through their own websites or by phone. Panther Lake Camping Resort, The Great Divide Campground, LLC, Fla-Net Park, and Kymers Camping Resort each handle reservations independently, and many hold blocks of seasonal sites that reduce transient RV inventory during peak months.
Before booking, confirm RV length limits, hookup type, and slide-out clearance. Swartswood accommodates trailers up to about 35 feet, and while individual campsites do not have hookups, an RV dump station is available within the park.
What to expect when camping near Lake Mohawk
Expect a wooded, hilly landscape with mixed hardwoods, small lakes, and rural two-lane roads. Cell service can be spotty in the area, so it is advisable to download directions in advance. Wi-Fi at private resorts is typically clustered near office and pavilion areas rather than at every site.
Site types range from full-hookup RV pads at private resorts to non-hookup state park sites. The Swartswood campground has 65 tent and trailer sites, and amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, showers, and a playground.
Rules to plan around: alcoholic beverages are prohibited in New Jersey state parks, and pets are only permitted at designated pet-friendly sites at Swartswood. Bears are active in Sussex County, so store food and coolers in a vehicle at all times. Private resorts have their own pet and fire policies, so check before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lake Mohawk, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lake Mohawk, NJ?
RV rental in Lake Mohawk is an affordable way to explore Sussex County compared to booking hotels and restaurants. Travel trailers near Lake Mohawk typically run around $125 to $175 per night, while motorhome rentals in Lake Mohawk average closer to $200 to $300 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. To find a cheap RV rental in Lake Mohawk, book midweek stays, target the shoulder season in May or late September, and sort listings by price on RVezy. Pro tip: many Sussex County owners drop their rates after Columbus Day when the foliage crowd thins but the weather is still pleasant.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mohawk%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Jersey?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Mohawk, NJ. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers, so a standard Class D license covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most Class A coaches you'll find on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older and must verify their ID during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license, and you're set to explore the Skylands.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included for protection and roadside help on my Lake Mohawk RV rental?
Every RV rental in Lake Mohawk comes with an RVezy renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the Skylands with confidence. You choose your protection level at checkout, not the host, and it covers most damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on Route 15 or a dead battery near Sparta Mountain, one phone call dispatches help any hour of the day. The protection plan provides real financial peace of mind so you can focus on the campfire instead of paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lake Mohawk RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and there's a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you're never left stranded. Because Lake Mohawk weather can swing from sunny lake days to surprise snow squalls in shoulder season, this flexibility matters. Pro tip: lock in dates early to secure the best inventory, then review the exact cancellation terms shown at checkout, and reach out to RVezy support anytime your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lake Mohawk RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Mohawk is easy to find: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see Sussex County listings whose hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. From there, head to a trail-rich destination like Kittatinny Valley State Park in Andover or the Paulinskill Valley Trail, both of which allow leashed dogs. New Jersey state park campgrounds require pets to be on a leash no longer than six feet and only allow them in designated pet-friendly loops (Swartswood State Park, for example, has a limited number of dog-friendly sites). Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences, then pack the leash and treats.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Lake Mohawk?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Mohawk is one of the best features for first-timers and anyone who'd rather skip driving a larger rig through Sparta's winding lake roads. Many Sussex County hosts will deliver and set up the RV right at your chosen site, whether that's Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover, Harmony Ridge Campground in Branchville, or a private driveway. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when you search on RVezy, then message the host with your destination and dates for an exact delivery quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mohawk%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive from Lake Mohawk on a typical RV rental?
You've got serious road trip range from Lake Mohawk, even on a long-weekend rental. Popular RV road trips from Lake Mohawk include the Delaware Water Gap (about 35 miles west), High Point State Park at the NJ-NY-PA tri-state corner (around 25 miles north), the Catskills around Phoenicia, NY (roughly 90 miles), the Poconos in PA (about 50 miles), and Lake George in the Adirondacks (around 200 miles). Each host sets their own mileage policy and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Check the listing's mileage details and add-on options before booking, and message the host if you're planning the longer Catskills or Adirondacks loop.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Lake Mohawk?
You're spoiled for choice on campgrounds near Lake Mohawk. Top picks include Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (full hookups and lakefront sites, about 15 minutes from Lake Mohawk), Harmony Ridge Campground in Branchville (160 acres in the Kittatinny Mountains), Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson (Morris County's largest park, great for RV camping Lake Mohawk visitors enjoy), Sawmill Lake Campground inside High Point State Park, and Stokes State Forest. Where to park an RV in Lake Mohawk overnight is best answered with a real campground, since overnight parking in private lots is generally not permitted in this part of New Jersey. Book Mahlon Dickerson early because locals know it fills first.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lake Mohawk?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Lake Mohawk RV trip, and each season has its own magic. June and July bring warm days in the high 70s to mid 80s, perfect for lake swimming and ice cream on the Lake Mohawk Boardwalk. September and the first three weeks of October deliver Skylands foliage with cooler 60-degree days, fewer bugs, and easier campground bookings. Winters are cold (often in the 20s and 30s with snow), so most campgrounds close from November through April. Local tip: aim for the last weekend in September when foliage is nearing peak but the crowds haven't fully arrived.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually know what I'm doing?
Yes, and first time renting an RV is more common than you'd think, especially in family-friendly Lake Mohawk. Every host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery: how to start the generator, dump tanks, switch from propane to electric, level the rig, and use the awning. They'll share direct contact info so you can text from the campsite if a question pops up. Add in the 24/7 roadside assistance that comes with every RVezy booking and you've got a safety net the whole trip. Pro tip: for your first time, book a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer; both drive like a large van and are forgiving on Sussex County's curvy back roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every Lake Mohawk RV rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 80, a dead battery near Wawayanda State Park, or a lockout at a Sparta gas station is one phone call away from help. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to troubleshoot anything from a finicky fridge to a re-routed return. Most hosts also leave a printed cheat sheet inside the RV with their direct number. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number during your walkthrough so it's saved offline if cell service drops in the Kittatinny ridges.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lake Mohawk RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Multi-state road trips are not only allowed, they're one of the best parts of renting in northern New Jersey. Lake Mohawk sits at the doorstep of New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, so weekend loops through the Catskills, Poconos, or Hudson Valley are popular and covered under the RVezy protection plan. Cross-border travel into Canada may be possible with advance host approval and the right documentation, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not covered under any RVezy rental, so plans must stay within the U.S. and Canada. Bring your passport for Canada trips and you're set for a true multi-region adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lake Mohawk RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV budget, but Lake Mohawk's location helps. New Jersey gas prices typically sit near the national average, and attendants pump your fuel for you (it's state law). Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and similar mileage for your tow vehicle with a travel trailer. For a 300-mile weekend loop to the Delaware Water Gap and back, plan on roughly $90 to $150 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: fill up in Sparta or Newton before heading into the Catskills, where station prices can climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lake Mohawk?
For the best campgrounds near Lake Mohawk, book early. New Jersey State Parks (High Point, Stokes State Forest, Swartswood) accept reservations through the state's online portal, and prime summer weekends at High Point's Sawmill Lake Campground regularly sell out months ahead. Private spots like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Harmony Ridge fill quickly for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Columbus Day foliage weekend, so aim for 2 to 3 months out. Same-day reservations can sometimes be made through the state portal when sites are available. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, try a Sunday-to-Thursday booking; sites are widely available and rates are lower.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/campreserv.htmlWhat's driving an RV around Lake Mohawk actually like?
Easier than you'd think. Lake Mohawk sits in the rolling Sussex County highlands, so you'll deal with gentle hills, two-lane country roads, and the occasional tight turn around the lake's perimeter, none of which are difficult in a Class C or campervan. The main routes (Route 15, Route 206, Interstate 80) are wide and RV-friendly. Watch for low-clearance bridges on older back roads and avoid the narrow lanes immediately around the historic Lake Mohawk Boardwalk in a larger rig. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Local tip: take Route 181 along Lake Hopatcong on your way out, it's one of the prettiest RV drives in the state.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Mohawk?
Most campgrounds near Lake Mohawk offer the full RV setup: 30/50-amp electric hookups, potable water fills, on-site dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the better-equipped private parks. Panther Lake Camping Resort, Harmony Ridge, and Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort all have full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at premium sites. State park campgrounds like Sawmill Lake at High Point and Stokes State Forest lean more rustic, with water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and a shared dump station but no individual sewer hookups. Pro tip: top off freshwater at your campground before leaving, since rural Sussex County has limited public fill stations.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/campreserv.htmlWhat should I expect inside a Lake Mohawk RV rental?
You're getting a real home on wheels. Most RV rentals in Lake Mohawk come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional convertible sleeping for kids (dinette and sofa beds), a kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, microwave, propane stove and often an oven, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane heat, and a dining area. Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a generator, TV, and seatbelts for passengers. Many hosts also include linens, towels, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs. Check the listing's amenities section on RVezy for specifics like Wi-Fi hotspots or solar setups, then message the host if a particular item matters for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mohawk%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Lake Mohawk rental?
Lots of flexibility here. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Lake Mohawk include generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, kayak racks, camping chairs and tables, linen packages, and pet cleaning fees, all priced by the host and visible on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Sparta, Andover, Newton, or another Sussex County town, and delivery to your campground is widely offered (especially helpful for travel trailers). Mileage policies vary: some listings include a set number of free miles per day, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask the host about bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package; many will discount the combo if you ask before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mohawk%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment to cover any potential damage beyond what the protection plan handles. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the right fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: do a video walkthrough with the host at pickup and dropoff in Lake Mohawk. It's the easiest way to document the RV's condition and avoid any deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lake Mohawk during winter?
Winter RV rental in Lake Mohawk is possible and a quiet way to experience the Skylands when fresh snow blankets the Kittatinny ridges. Many hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and the ability to run on shore power at sites that stay open year-round. Most New Jersey state park campgrounds close from November to April, so target private parks with winter hookups and confirm winterization specs with your host before booking. Pro tip: pair a winter rental with skiing at Mountain Creek in nearby Vernon, then warm up by a campfire back at the RV.
