Campgrounds near Long Valley
Long Valley sits in Morris County's rolling Highlands region of northwest New Jersey, giving RV renters a compact base for reaching several public campgrounds and one large private resort within roughly a 30-mile radius. The terrain is wooded hills, trout streams, and reservoirs, part of the same landscape the Musconetcong River carves through as it heads west toward the Delaware.
The closest public tent and small-trailer campground is Stephens State Park, which offers tent and small trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables along the Musconetcong River near Hackettstown. To the southwest, Voorhees State Park offers 47 tent and trailer campsites plus two group campsites that accommodate up to 50 campers each, along with rustic shelters. Fla-Net Park adds another rural option in the area.
For RV renters who need full utility hookups, Panther Lake Camping Resort sits on 160 wooded acres featuring a 45-acre lake, roughly 50 miles from New York City. Goodland Country Club and Spa on Drakestown Road in Hackettstown provides a further private-park option nearby.
Things to do around Long Valley
Fishing and paddling headline the area. The Musconetcong River is a trout-stocked stream that also allows canoeing and kayaking, and anglers follow standard New Jersey Fish and Wildlife regulations. Willoughby Brook inside Voorhees State Park is designated a Wild Trout Stream with its own rules.
Hikers can pick up long-distance trail miles close to camp. Stephens State Park has about six miles of marked trails used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and a two-mile section of the Highlands Trail runs along the length of the park. Voorhees offers multi-use trails through wooded Hunterdon County hills, with overlooks toward Round Valley and Spruce Run reservoirs.
Stargazing is a signature activity at Voorhees. The New Jersey Astronomical Association operates the observatory on land leased from the state, home to a 26-inch Newtonian reflector telescope, and offers public sky-watch programs year round.

The state-park camping season is tightly bounded. Stephens State Park campsites are open April 1 through October 31, and Voorhees family campsites, group sites, and shelters run the same April 1 through October 31 window. Panther Lake Camping Resort follows a similar schedule, typically reopening in mid-April and closing at the end of October.
Spring brings trout stocking on the Musconetcong and cool nights that can still drop into the 30s Fahrenheit through April. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest and fill first. Fall delivers hardwood color through October and cooler, drier camping into the closing week of the season.
Winter closes the campgrounds but not the parks themselves. The open terrain at Stephens is ideal for cross-country skiing during the winter months, and day visitors can still enter Voorhees to use its multi-use trails, though trails are not groomed and skiers must bring their own gear.

How to book a site near Long Valley
New Jersey state park sites use one central system. Online reservations for both Stephens and Voorhees are made at camping.nj.gov. The Spruce Run Park Office at 908-638-8572 handles questions for Voorhees, which is administered from Spruce Run since there is no on-site office. Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the state park campgrounds.
Occupancy is capped at six people per family campsite unless all are one family, and at least one adult 18 or older must be on the reservation. Refunds are not issued for no-shows or evictions.
Private resorts book directly. Panther Lake Camping Resort takes reservations through its own website and phone line, and weekends and holidays sell out early in the summer season.
What to expect on-site
State-park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Stephens has tent and small-trailer sites with flush toilets and showers within walking distance, but no individual hookups. Voorhees adds shelter cabins with wood stoves and bunks, and while the campground itself lacks hookups, a sanitary dump station is available to Voorhees campers at nearby Spruce Run Recreation Area.
Panther Lake is the full-service option. The resort spans 160 wooded acres around a 45-acre lake and offers hundreds of sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable TV at select sites, along with a swimming pool, sandy beach, and organized activities.
Black bears are found throughout New Jersey. Do not approach or attract bears by making food available, and note that feeding bears is dangerous and illegal. Store food in the RV and lock coolers between meals.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Long Valley, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Long Valley, NJ?
An RV rental in Long Valley typically runs between $125 and $300 per night, with travel trailers landing on the lower end and Class A motorhomes commanding the higher rates. Because Long Valley sits in Morris County's rural Skylands region, a popular weekend escape from the NYC metro, prices peak from late June through Labor Day and around fall foliage weekends in October. For a cheap RV rental in Long Valley, target midweek pickups in May or late September when many hosts drop rates by 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a 5-7 night booking often unlocks a discount, so message the host before booking to ask what package they can put together.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Valley%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Jersey?
Good news: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Jersey, even for a large Class A motorhome used for personal travel. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) exempts recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements as long as you're not using the rig commercially. To book on RVezy you'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and you'll upload your ID through the platform for quick verification. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to roll out of Long Valley.
nj.gov/mvc/license/driverlicense.htmWhat kind of protection comes with my RV rental in Long Valley?
Every RVezy booking in Long Valley includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive off feeling covered. You choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, with multiple tiers available so you can match protection to your comfort zone. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind on the winding back roads of Morris County and beyond. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers side-by-side when you book, then save the 24/7 roadside number in your phone before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Long Valley RV rental?
You can book your RV rental in Long Valley with confidence because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking. Beyond that window, refunds depend on how far out your trip is from your pickup date. Cancellation terms are managed by RVezy directly, so you won't see different rules buried in each listing. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you're not left scrambling. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Long Valley dates, and reach out to RVezy support right away if your plans shift so they can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Long Valley RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Long Valley is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who happily welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you're on the road, your pup will love Schooley's Mountain County Park right in Long Valley with its 3.5-mile loop trail around Lake George, plus Stephens State Park along the Musconetcong River is fully leash-friendly. Most NJ state park campgrounds charge about $5 per night for pets and require a 6-foot leash. Pro tip: message the host about any pet fee or shedding deposit before you book, and pack a collapsible water bowl since the Schooley's Mountain trails warm up fast in July.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/schooleys-mountain-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Long Valley?
Yes, RV delivery in Long Valley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather not drive a 30-foot motorhome out of someone's driveway on their first try. Many local hosts will deliver to nearby spots like Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, Stephens State Park, or even your own driveway in Morris County, then set up the RV, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery, then ask the host for an all-in quote that includes setup and pickup so there are no surprises at checkout.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Long Valley?
Most hosts in Long Valley include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles priced around $0.30 to $0.45 each, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage if you ask. From Long Valley you're roughly 55 miles to the George Washington Bridge, 85 miles to the Delaware Water Gap, 110 miles to Cape May, and about 130 miles to Philadelphia, so most weekend loops fit comfortably inside a standard mileage package. Heading to the Catskills? That's about 95 miles north. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and message the host with the total, then ask if they'll bundle an unlimited-mileage add-on for a flat fee, it often saves money over per-mile overages.
state.nj.us/transportation/Where are the best campgrounds near Long Valley for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice when RV camping in Long Valley. Four favorites: Stephens State Park in Hackettstown (about 8 miles west, sites along the Musconetcong River with electric hookups), Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson (Morris County's largest park with 50-amp full-hookup sites), Round Valley Recreation Area in Lebanon (about 25 miles south, crystal-clear reservoir and great for swimming), and Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (full hookups, pool, family-friendly). For a quieter pick, Jenny Jump State Forest offers wooded, pet-friendly sites about 30 minutes northwest. Pro tip: state park sites book up to 11 months ahead at camping.nj.gov, so reserve as soon as your dates are firm, especially for summer weekends.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/stephens.htmlWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Long Valley?
Long Valley shines from late April through late October, and shoulder seasons are honestly the sweet spot. Summers (June-August) bring average highs of 77-83°F with humidity and afternoon thunderstorms; September and early October deliver crisp 60-75°F days and the famous Skylands fall foliage. April and May (highs 58-69°F) are perfect for blossoms at nearby orchards like Ort Farms. Winters get cold (averages 22-34°F in January with about 14 inches of annual snowfall), and most public campgrounds close November through March. Pro tip: book the second or third weekend of October for peak foliage in the Highlands, it's the most photogenic time for a Long Valley RV trip and bug pressure is finally gone.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Long+Valley&state=NJ&site=PHII've never rented an RV before. Will I actually know how to use it?
Yes, and you're going to be fine. First time renting an RV in Long Valley? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering the generator, slide-outs, water hookups, propane, holding tanks, and the dump procedure, plus they share a contact number for trip-long questions. The RVezy Help Center has step-by-step articles, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a call away with any protection plan. Long Valley itself sits on quiet country roads like CR-513, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel before you hit anything busier. Pro tip: ask the host to record a quick video of the walkthrough on your phone, you'll thank yourself two days later when you're hooking up at the campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007634-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 80, a dead battery at Round Valley, or a tow out of a tight campground loop is one phone call away. You'll also have the host's number for quick troubleshooting on things like a tripped breaker or a finicky slide-out, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Long Valley is a manageable drive from major service hubs in Hackettstown, Flanders, and Morristown, so help reaches you faster than in remote areas. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate at pickup, it speeds up any service call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008954-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Long Valley rental on a road trip out of state or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Long Valley to neighboring states is one of the best parts of renting here. You're a short hop from Pennsylvania (Pocono Mountains, about 60 miles), New York (Hudson Valley, about 90 miles), Massachusetts (Berkshires, about 150 miles), and Vermont or New Hampshire for fall foliage runs. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package does not extend there. Pro tip: if you're planning a Canada route, ask the host in writing and get it confirmed before booking so customs paperwork is smooth at the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Long Valley RV rental?
Budgeting fuel for a motorhome rental in Long Valley is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans average 18-22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 mpg, Class A rigs typically pull 6-10 mpg, and travel trailers add about 2-4 mpg of drag to your tow vehicle. New Jersey gas prices have been hovering around $3.10-$3.40 per gallon for regular and roughly $3.60 for diesel in 2026. For a typical 250-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on $80-$110 in fuel. Pro tip: New Jersey is a full-service state, you legally cannot pump your own gas, so factor in a couple of extra minutes per stop and have your fuel door location memorized before you pull in.
nj.gov/oag/newsreleases16/pr20160809b.htmlHow far ahead should I book a campground near Long Valley?
For New Jersey state parks like Stephens, Round Valley, and Voorhees, reservations open up to 11 months in advance at camping.nj.gov, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) book up months out. Private campgrounds such as Panther Lake Camping Resort and Great Divide Campground in Newton typically fill 2-4 months ahead for July and August weekends. Off-season (April-May and late September-October) often has same-week availability. Pro tip: set up your My New Jersey account at camping.nj.gov before your booking window opens, then have your dates and site preferences ready, popular Round Valley and Stephens sites can disappear within minutes when they release.
camping.nj.gov/What are the local roads like for driving an RV around Long Valley?
Long Valley sits in the rolling Hunterdon Highlands, so expect scenic but winding two-lane roads like CR-513, CR-517, and Schooley's Mountain Road, all very RV-friendly at posted speeds. For longer hauls you'll connect to I-80 (about 12 miles north) and I-78 (about 15 miles south), both wide interstates well-suited to motorhomes. Avoid the Garden State Parkway with anything over 10 feet tall (commercial vehicle restrictions apply), and skip narrow village shortcuts through Califon or Oldwick. Pro tip: download an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or Garmin RV before you head out, standard navigation will sometimes route you under the 10'9" railroad bridge in nearby High Bridge, which is a tight squeeze for any Class C.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Long Valley?
Most campgrounds near Long Valley offer the essentials you need for a smooth trip. State parks like Stephens and Round Valley provide potable water spigots, vault or flush restrooms, and sanitary dump stations (free for registered campers), though full hookups are limited. For 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at your site, private parks like Panther Lake Camping Resort, Great Divide Campground, and Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort are the move. Propane refills can be scarce at campgrounds themselves, so plan a fill-up at a Tractor Supply or U-Haul in Hackettstown or Flanders. Pro tip: if you're heading to a state park, dump and fill fresh water on the way in, you'll thank yourself when you're not chasing a hose at 7 a.m. on departure day.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/roundvalley.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Long Valley?
You'll be surprised how dialed-in these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Long Valley sleeps 4-8 people with a queen bedroom, convertible dinette, and bunk options, plus a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control via roof AC and furnace, and proper DOT seatbelts for travel. Most rentals include a TV, many have onboard generators or solar, and a growing number include WiFi hotspots or cellular boosters (great because Verizon and AT&T coverage in the Skylands can be spotty). Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and scroll the photos, then ask the host if linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are included, many bundle a free "kitchen kit" that saves you a Target run.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Long Valley?
You can customize your Long Valley RV rental quite a bit. Common add-ons include delivery and setup, generator hours, propane, linens and towels, camp chairs, bikes, kayaks, pet fees, and dump-and-refill service at return (typically $25-$75). Pickup is usually at the host's home or a mutually agreed lot in Long Valley, Chester, or Hackettstown; same-location dropoff is standard, though some hosts will discuss one-way arrangements for popular routes like Long Valley to Cape May. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing's free-mile allotment before booking. Pro tip: bundle delivery + linens + dump service into one quote, hosts often discount the package vs. picking add-ons à la carte.
state.nj.us/transportation/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and handled entirely through the platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You'll pay the trip total (rental fee, service fee, chosen protection package, and any add-ons) with a credit or debit card when you book. Hosts set a refundable security deposit, typically $500-$1,500 in Long Valley depending on the RV's size and value, which is authorized separately from your booking payment and released after a clean return with no damage. Pro tip: do a thorough photo and video walkaround at pickup AND dropoff (timestamp the files), it's the single best way to ensure your security deposit comes back fast and in full.
