Campgrounds and RV parks near Longport, NJ

The main draw is the beach. Longport, Margate, and Ventnor have quieter guarded beaches than Atlantic City, and the boardwalk in Ventnor connects north into Atlantic City for a long, flat bike or stroller route. Fishing charters and back-bay boat tours run out of Margate and Somers Point. Inland, the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge offers an eight-mile wildlife drive through salt marsh popular for birding. Belleplain State Forest, about forty-five minutes southwest, has hiking, freshwater swimming at Lake Nummy, and paddling on quiet ponds. Families typically add a day at the Ocean City boardwalk and amusement piers, the Atlantic City boardwalk, and Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township. Golf courses, breweries, and farm stands fill in the shoulder days.

The camping season on this stretch of the Jersey Shore runs roughly from April through October. Whippoorwill Campground operates seasonally from April through late October, and Lake and Shore RV Resort and Frontier Campground run on similar warm-weather schedules. Shady Pines, a Sun RV Communities property, keeps RV sites open year-round alongside its 55-plus manufactured home community. July and August are peak season. Beach towns are busy, boardwalks are open nightly, and popular sites at private campgrounds and at state facilities like Belleplain State Forest fill weeks or months out. June and September are the sweet spot for RV renters: warm water, thinner crowds, and easier bookings. May and October bring cooler nights and shoulder-season rates but limited pool access. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity from August through October. Storms rarely make direct landfall this far north, but tropical remnants can bring heavy rain and coastal flooding.

The terrain is flat pine barrens and salt marsh, so driving a rental RV in is straightforward. Most private campgrounds near Longport offer 30- and 50-amp service, and several provide full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi. Shady Pines has over 95 full-hookup sites that accommodate RVs up to about forty feet, and Whippoorwill offers level, wooded sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus a pool and arcade. Expect an active family atmosphere at the private parks: pools, planned activities, playgrounds, and weekend events are standard. Some parks include a large share of seasonal and long-term residents, which can mean a quieter, community feel rather than a resort vibe. Mosquitoes and greenhead flies are noticeable near marshes in midsummer. Ticks are present in wooded areas. Pack repellent and check pets.
