The public and private campgrounds around Mendham operate on a seasonal calendar. Stephens State Park is open April 1 through October 31, Panther Lake Camping Resort runs mid-April through late October, and The Great Divide Campground, LLC opens in May and closes in mid-October. Winter RV camping options in the immediate area are limited. Late spring and early fall bring the most comfortable weather and lighter crowds. Trout stocking on the Musconetcong peaks in April and May, and shoulder-season weekends are the sweet spot for cooler nights and open sites without the summer surge. Summer weekends fill fastest, particularly Fourth of July, Labor Day, and any weekend with live entertainment at the private resorts. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October across the Skylands, and biting-insect pressure drops sharply after the first cool nights. Trails and riverbanks can be muddy after heavy summer thunderstorms, so plan for changeable footing.

State park camping in this area is basic: fire ring, picnic table, and walking-distance flush toilets and showers, with no hookups at Stephens State Park. Roads can be narrow and rutted, and larger Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels may struggle to maneuver, so a smaller rental is easier here. Private resorts feel more like small neighborhoods. Panther Lake Camping Resort spreads across 160 wooded acres with a 45-acre lake and several hundred RV sites plus cabins, and The Great Divide Campground, LLC offers about 270 sites with full-hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive options. Many sites are held by seasonal campers with permanent setups, so expect a lived-in feel. Cell service can be spotty in the surrounding hills, so download maps and reservation details before arriving. Quiet hours at state sites run 10 pm to 6 am.
