Camping in central New Jersey is a seasonal affair. Most nearby public campgrounds run from spring through fall. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open April 1 through November 15, while the park itself stays open year-round. Voorhees State Park's family sites, shelters, and group sites operate April 1 through October 31, and Washington Crossing State Park's group campsites, when open, follow the same April to October window.
Spring and fall bring mild weather, migrating birds, and lower demand, making them the easiest windows for last-minute planning. Summer is peak season: weekends fill early, and holiday weekends carry minimum-stay rules at most parks. Bugs and humidity climb from June through August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Winter shuts down almost all overnight camping in the area. Private parks like Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort may operate year-round with cabins, but state and county campgrounds close, so travelers arriving in the colder months should confirm operating dates directly with each property.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campsites near Middlebush
New Jersey state parks, including Voorhees State Park and Washington Crossing State Park, NJ, use the state's central reservation portal at camping.nj.gov, with the Spruce Run park office handling questions for Voorhees. Group campsites at Washington Crossing are primitive tent-only areas that must be reserved through the same portal when they reopen.
Turkey Swamp Park is operated by the Monmouth County Park System. Reservations open after January 1 for that calendar year and can be made online or by calling the campground office. Weekends require a two-night minimum, holiday weekends a three-night minimum, and cabin bookings are phone-only. Campers must be 21 or older to rent a site.
Private parks like Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort and Timberland Lake Campground book directly through their own websites or offices. For summer weekends, reserve well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Campground character varies widely. Turkey Swamp Park has 64 wooded pull-through campsites with water and electric hookups that fit rigs up to 40 feet, plus modern restrooms with hot showers, laundry, a self-serve dump station, fire rings, picnic tables, and playgrounds. Of the 64 sites, 52 are reservable and 12 are first-come, first-served, and three cabins are also available.
Voorhees State Park is more rustic. It has a limited number of RV-capable sites, generally fitting rigs up to about 36 feet, along with tent sites, shelters, and cabins. Recent camper reports describe variable upkeep and some bathhouse closures. Washington Crossing State Park, NJ camping is primitive group tent camping with fire rings and portable toilets, no hookups, and no running water.
Bring bug spray, plan for tick checks after hikes, and note that water hookups at older sites can sit far from the pad, so extra hose length is useful.
