Camping near Montvale, New Jersey
Montvale sits in northern Bergen County, minutes from the New York state line and within an hour's drive of several public campgrounds. RV renters use it as a base for trips into the Ramapo Mountains, Harriman State Park, and the New Jersey Highlands, while still keeping the Manhattan skyline within reach.
Options range from state-park campgrounds to private RV parks and rustic group sites. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park draws crowds thanks to its location next to Lake Welch and access to the park's trail network. Wawayanda State Park offers a quieter, forested setting in the Highlands, and Black Bear Campground provides full hookups and family amenities on the New York side of the border.
For travelers who want to stay closer to the city, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City puts an RV within a short PATH ride of Lower Manhattan. Camp Wyanokie fills a niche for renters looking for a primitive backcountry experience in the Wyanokie Highlands.
Things to do near Montvale
Hiking dominates the area. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of marked trails, and Wawayanda State Park's trail system includes a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Families gravitate to the swimming beaches, boat launches, and fishing lakes at both parks.
Paddling is a major draw. Wawayanda Lake has kayak rentals and a boat launch, and Lake Welch inside Harriman offers a lifeguarded swimming beach in summer. Anglers can target bass and trout, and Wawayanda Lake was stocked with landlocked salmon.
Off-trail options include cider mills and pick-your-own orchards in nearby Warwick, New York, and day trips into New York City from campgrounds close to a transit line.

The camping window in this part of the Northeast is tight. Wawayanda State Park's campground is open April 1 to October 31. Beaver Pond at Harriman follows a similar late-April through mid-October pattern, while private parks such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park operate year-round.
Late spring and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions: daytime highs in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, lower humidity, and thinner crowds. Summer brings warm days that are good for swimming and paddling, but weekends fill quickly and humidity climbs.
July and August book up fastest, especially weekends and holidays. Peak foliage typically runs through mid-October in the Highlands. Winter camping is limited to a few private parks; state-park sites shut down, and roads inside Harriman can close after snow.

How to book campgrounds near Montvale
New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda, are reserved through the state's online system at camping.nj.gov. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends should be booked as early as possible.
Harriman State Park sites, including Beaver Pond Campground, are booked through the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. A rolling nine-month booking window applies, and Friday and Saturday nights disappear quickly.
Private parks such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Camp Wyanokie is a rustic group site that requires arrangements through its managing organization rather than a public booking portal.
What to expect at campgrounds near Montvale
Hookups vary widely. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Black Bear Campground offer full water, electric, and sewer service, while state-park sites in New Jersey and New York are typically primitive. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups but does provide full-service bathrooms with showers and a dump station. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Cell service is spotty inside Harriman and Wawayanda. Bears are active across the region, so food must be stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear boxes. Tick checks are essential from spring through fall.
Beaver Pond limits trailers and RVs to 30 feet. Renters in larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should confirm access and site length limits with each campground before booking.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Montvale, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Montvale, NJ?
An RV rental in Montvale, NJ fits a wide range of budgets when you book directly from a local host on RVezy. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $300, and larger Class A motorhomes range from $250 to $450 nightly. Since hosts set their own pricing, you can find cheap RV rental Montvale options by booking midweek, traveling outside July and August, or choosing a slightly older travel trailer over a brand-new motorhome. Pro tip: use the price filter on RVezy and message a few hosts to ask about weekly discounts, which are common for stays of five nights or longer in the Bergen County area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montvale,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Montvale, NJ?
Good news for first-time renters: New Jersey does not require any special license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive a personal-use RV. A regular driver's license is all you need for every Class A, Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, or fifth wheel listed on RVezy in Montvale. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and your identity is confirmed quickly through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before your trip. That's it, no test, no endorsement, no paperwork at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission required.
nj.gov/mvc/drivertopics/cdl.htmIs my RV rental in Montvale protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Montvale with real peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most accidental physical damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap does not ruin your vacation. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video of the RV at pickup and drop-off. It takes two minutes and gives you and your host a clear shared record, making the entire experience smoother.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Montvale RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a single, clear cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, your refund depends on how far out your trip is, and RVezy also has guidance for extenuating circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters, which Bergen County occasionally sees with nor'easters or hurricane remnants in fall. You will not see different policies on different listings because RVezy manages this for you. Pro tip: book early to lock in the RV you want, then use the grace period to double-check your dates and route before you are fully committed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Montvale?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Montvale has available, then message the host about any specifics like size or breed. Once you are on the road, dogs love nearby spots such as Campgaw Mountain Reservation in Mahwah (about 15 minutes from Montvale) for leashed hiking, and Ramapo Valley County Reservation, which has miles of dog-friendly trails along the Ramapo River. Most New Jersey state park campgrounds also allow leashed pets at designated sites. Pro tip: bring a long tie-out line and a collapsible water bowl, and you will have one very happy co-pilot for your Montvale RV trip.
co.bergen.nj.us/parks-recreationCan the RV be delivered to me in Montvale instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery Montvale is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are a first-time renter or simply prefer not to drive a motorhome through Bergen County traffic. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up the RV at your campground, driveway, or event location, then walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Campgaw Mountain Reservation, Darlington County Park, and Harriman State Park just across the New York border. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm the fee, which is usually based on mileage from their location to yours.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montvale,%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Montvale?
You can go just about anywhere from Montvale, which sits right at the New York border with quick access to I-87, I-287, and the Garden State Parkway. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering generous daily allowances and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Popular drives include Harriman State Park (about 30 miles north), the Catskills (about 90 miles), Lake George NY (about 220 miles), Cape May at the Jersey Shore (about 175 miles), and Acadia National Park in Maine (about 475 miles). Pro tip: ask the host upfront about their mileage rate; locking in a higher allowance at booking is almost always cheaper than paying overage fees later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montvale,%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Montvale, NJ?
You have great options within an easy drive of Montvale. Campgaw Mountain Reservation in Mahwah (about 6 miles away) offers wooded tent and small-trailer sites managed by Bergen County. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 35 miles) is the largest RV-friendly campground in Morris County, with electric hookups, a dump station, and over 20 miles of trails. Just over the New York line, Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park (about 25 miles) is a local favorite for RV camping Montvale travelers love. For something more resort-style, Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover offers full hookups. Pro tip: book through camping.nj.gov for state sites well in advance, as popular weekends fill quickly.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Montvale?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot in northern New Jersey. May and June bring temperatures in the 65 to 80 degree range with everything blooming, July and August are warm (often 80 to 90 degrees) and perfect for lake swimming, and September through mid-October delivers the famous Northeast fall foliage with crisp 50 to 70 degree days. Winter RV camping is possible at year-round spots like Camp Glen Gray, but expect freezing temperatures and snow, so confirm the RV has a winter package. Insider tip: the last two weeks of October are magical for a motorhome rental Montvale getaway. Foliage peaks across the Ramapo Mountains, campgrounds empty out, and rates often drop 20 to 30 percent.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one from Montvale?
You will do great, and you will not be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, water systems, and the generator. If you are nervous about your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or a small travel trailer, and consider delivery so a host handles the trickier setup. Around Montvale, stick to highways like I-287 and I-87 rather than narrow streets in Manhattan or Hoboken. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your trip plan; experienced owners will happily suggest a rig that matches your comfort level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Campgaw Mountain or 300 miles up I-87 in the Adirondacks. Roadside assistance handles common road issues like tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified repair facility. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you have questions or need help coordinating. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave Montvale, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, which makes any roadside call much faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Montvale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, U.S. interstate travel is welcome on virtually every RV rental in Montvale, NJ, and most renters cross at least one state line given Montvale sits five minutes from the New York border. Popular RV road trip from Montvale routes include New England fall foliage tours, Niagara Falls, Washington D.C., and the Outer Banks. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: if Canada is on your wish list, mention it in your first message; many Bergen County hosts have helped guests do the Montreal or Quebec City run before.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Montvale RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you might think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get roughly 10 to 14 MPG, Class A motorhomes 7 to 10 MPG, and tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer typically land at 10 to 13 MPG. New Jersey gas prices tend to run slightly below the national average, and as a bonus, attendants pump your gas for you (it's the law). For a weekend trip from Montvale up to Harriman State Park and back (about 60 miles round trip), most renters spend $25 to $50 on fuel. Pro tip: fuel up in New Jersey before crossing into New York, where prices and taxes are usually higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Montvale?
For the best campgrounds near Montvale, NJ, the earlier the better, especially for summer weekends. New Jersey state parks like Stokes State Forest, Worthington State Forest, and Round Valley accept reservations in advance through camping.nj.gov, the official state booking portal. County parks like Campgaw Mountain and Mahlon Dickerson open reservations early in the year for the April through November season and fill quickly for holiday weekends. Private resorts like Panther Lake Camping Resort can usually be booked 3 to 6 months out. Pro tip: for a spontaneous family RV trip Montvale weekend, aim for Sunday through Thursday nights or check camping.nj.gov 48 hours before; cancellations open up new sites all the time.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Montvale for an RV?
Driving an RV around Montvale is very manageable once you stick to the right roads. Sections of the Garden State Parkway in northern New Jersey restrict trucks and large RVs, so motorhomes should use I-287, I-87 (NY Thruway), or Route 17, which are all RV-friendly highways with high overpasses. Avoid the Palisades Interstate Parkway entirely (no commercial or RV traffic allowed) and steer clear of the George Washington Bridge's lower level if you are over height. Watch for low clearances on the older Route 17 underpasses and use an RV-specific GPS. Pro tip: leave Montvale before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m. to dodge the heavy NYC-bound commuter traffic on weekday mornings.
state.nj.us/turnpike/gsp-commercial.htmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Montvale offer for RVs?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Montvale offer the essentials and more. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation has electric hookups (20, 30, and 50 amp at select sites), a dump station, restrooms with showers, and seasonal water access. New Jersey state parks generally provide electric at designated RV loops, potable water fill stations, dump stations, fire rings, and picnic tables, with bathhouses centrally located. Private resorts like Panther Lake add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and camp stores. For dumping and water fill on the road, many highway-adjacent travel centers along I-87 and I-287 have RV-friendly stations. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter; they handle most hookup situations in this region.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/camping/What features and amenities come inside a typical Montvale RV rental?
Even budget rentals come well-equipped. A typical RV rental in Montvale, NJ includes sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for safe travel. Most rigs also have a TV, awning, outdoor speakers, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid power. A campervan rental Montvale option (Class B) trades some space for better fuel economy and easier parking. Many hosts include linens, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs. Pro tip: message the host with your group size and gear list before booking so they can confirm everything fits comfortably.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montvale,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Montvale RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a wide range of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include delivery and setup (often charged per mile from the host), generator use (sometimes included, sometimes per-hour), bike racks, outdoor grills, kayaks, linen and kitchen packages, and pet cleaning fees if you are bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Montvale, with a typical afternoon pickup window and a late-morning return. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily allowances and overage fees clearly listed on each RV. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in one message to the host; many will offer a small discount for combined extras.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montvale,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You pay your trip total (rental, fees, and protection plan) by credit or debit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, with the amount set per listing, and it is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in the same condition. Pro tip: do the walkaround video with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Montvale, refuel to the original level, and empty the tanks if required, and your deposit comes back quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle urban driving and city escapes from Montvale?
The great news is that you do not have to drive an RV into Manhattan to enjoy a trip from Montvale. The smartest move is to use RV delivery so the host drops the RV at your campground, then keep your regular car for any city errands. If you do drive yourself, stick to I-287 and I-87 north toward nature; you are only about 30 minutes to Harriman State Park, 45 minutes to the Delaware Water Gap, and 90 minutes to the Catskills. Avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels (no propane allowed) and the Palisades Parkway (no RVs). Pro tip: many Bergen County hosts will meet you at a nearby campground for pickup, saving you from driving the RV through traffic at all.
