Turkey Swamp Park has a 17-acre lake for boating and fishing with rental boats, 8 miles of trails, four playgrounds, and open playfields. The park also has an archery range and sits on the northern fringe of the Pine Barrens for flat, sandy hiking. Allaire State Park is best known for Allaire Village, a preserved 19th-century iron-making town, and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train ride, with the Manasquan River winding through the park for freshwater fishing. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and marked multi-use trails add to the mix. Private resorts lean family-oriented. Tip Tam Camping Resort features two playgrounds, basketball, mini golf, a softball field, beach volleyball, two supervised pools, and a tiki bar. Butterfly and Pine Cone run weekend activities with crafts, mini-golf, pool games, and organized events.

Camping season in this part of central New Jersey runs spring through late fall. The Turkey Swamp Park campgrounds are open April 1 through November 15 and provide facilities for tent camping and travel trailers. Allaire State Park campsites and its ten shelters, cabin-like structures with a wood stove and two double-deck bunks that sleep up to four, are open April 1 through December 15. The trailer sanitary station at Allaire runs April 15 through October 15. Summer is peak season. School vacations, warm Atlantic beach weather, and heavy Six Flags traffic push weekend bookings months ahead, especially over the July 4 and Labor Day holidays. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Fall foliage peaks in late October. Winter closes most sites, and only limited year-round camping remains in the area. Allaire family campsites are currently closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility, though group camping is not affected and continues to run April 1 through December 15.

Sites lean wooded and sandy, reflecting the Pine Barrens edge. Turkey Swamp Park has 64 pull-through campsites that can accommodate tent campers, travel trailers, and motor homes up to 40 feet with up to 6 people; 52 sites can be reserved and 12 are first-come, first-served. All campsites are pull-through with water and electric hookups. Allaire State Park has 45 campsites in a forested setting near the Manasquan River, plus 10 shelters. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and an RV dump station open mid-April to mid-October, with each site including a table, fire ring, and grate. Larger rigs should target the more open sites; interior campground roads are narrow and wooded. Day-use fees apply at New Jersey State Parks in season, pets must be kept on a six-foot leash, and black bears are present in New Jersey parks, so standard bear safety practices apply.
