Camping near Morris Plains, New Jersey
Morris Plains sits in Morris County in northwestern New Jersey, roughly 30 miles west of Manhattan, and works well as a base for RV travellers who want proximity to New York City combined with access to the Highlands region's lakes, rivers, and state parks.
Options within a short drive range from full-hookup private parks to tent-focused state park sites. Fla-Net Park in Flanders offers full-hookup RV sites off I-80 and can accommodate rigs up to about 60 feet. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover spans 160 wooded acres around a 45-acre lake and offers RV sites and cabin rentals. Stephens State Park in Hackettstown has 39 tent and small-trailer sites along the Musconetcong River. Camp Wyanokie in West Milford is rustic-only, with no RV access, no running water, and no electricity. Goodland Country Club and Spa in Hackettstown rounds out the options west of the city.
Most private parks sit near Route 46, Route 80, or Route 206, which keeps grocery runs, fuel, and pump-outs within easy reach.
Things to do around Morris Plains
The surrounding Highlands offer trout streams, lakes, and long-distance trails. The Musconetcong River flows through Stephens State Park and is a stocked trout fishery, with an easy walking path along the water and picnic areas in shaded spots. A section of the Highlands Trail runs the length of Stephens State Park, connecting to a broader route across northern New Jersey.
Family-oriented resorts add on-site recreation. Panther Lake Camping Resort offers a sandy beach and lake swimming, kayak, paddleboat, and pedal-boat rentals, fishing, a swimming pool, and courts for tennis, basketball, pickleball, and horseshoes. Camp Wyanokie surrounds a 5-acre lake bordering Norvin Green State Forest, with hiking trails maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. History stops nearby include remnants of the Morris Canal at Saxton Falls, less than a mile east of Stephens State Park along Waterloo Road.
Downtown Morristown, with its Revolutionary War sites and NJ Transit service to New York Penn Station, is a short drive from most area campgrounds.

The camping season in northwestern New Jersey is heavily seasonal. Stephens State Park's campground is open April 1 through October 31, and Panther Lake Camping Resort operates from April 15 through October 31. Fla-Net Park lists a transient season of April 1 through October 15. Winter RV camping in the immediate area is limited, and most private parks close their short-stay operations between late October and early April.
Spring is trout season on the Musconetcong and other Highlands streams, and shoulder-season weekends in April and May tend to have wider availability. Summer weekends fill quickly at lake-based resorts, particularly around Independence Day and Labor Day. Fall brings peak foliage in mid to late October, cool nights, and lighter crowds at state parks.
Black bears are present throughout northern New Jersey, and feeding bears is dangerous and illegal. Food storage discipline is essential year-round, and ticks are active from spring through late fall.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Morris Plains
New Jersey state park campsites, including Stephens State Park, are booked through the state's central reservation system at camping.nj.gov, where users can search by park, arrival date, number of nights, trailer length, and site features. Rangers verify pet vaccination records at check-in for pet-friendly sites, so bring current paperwork.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Panther Lake Camping Resort takes reservations by phone or through its website. Fla-Net Park accepts reservations directly with the office. Camp Wyanokie handles reservations through Campspot, and a paid reservation is required for pavilion and campsite use.
For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks in advance at lake-based resorts. Stephens State Park sites often show cancellations, so setting up an availability notification through the NJ system is worthwhile.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area range from full-hookup RV pads to walk-in tent spots. Stephens State Park has 39 tent and small-trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, plus flush toilets and showers within walking distance, though some sites may not suit large RVs so it is worth checking dimensions when booking. Fla-Net Park offers full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service and water, electric, and sewer connections at each site.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the wooded areas west of Morris Plains. At Panther Lake, cell service is spotty across most of the property, with reliable coverage limited to areas near the entrance, pool, and pavilion, and WiFi follows the same pattern. Downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is a good habit.
Road noise from I-80 carries into some campground loops, so requesting an interior or wooded site improves the experience for light sleepers.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Morris Plains, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Morris Plains cost?
RV rental in Morris Plains is more affordable than many expect for the New York metro area. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs $225 to $400 depending on season and amenities. The cheapest RV rental in Morris Plains is usually a travel trailer or campervan booked midweek or in the shoulder season (April to May or late September to October). Many local hosts offer multi-night and weekly discounts, so a 5 to 7 day Morris Plains RV trip drops your nightly rate significantly. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in dates fast for fall foliage weekends, which fill up across Morris County by mid-August.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Morris%20Plains%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Morris Plains, NJ?
Good news: a regular New Jersey (or out-of-state) Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Morris Plains. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for vehicles over 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and essentially every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well under that limit. You need to be 25 or older to book under RVezy approved driver guidelines, and your ID is verified right through the platform, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license and you are set for your Morris Plains RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Morris Plains?
Every RVezy booking in Morris Plains comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you are covered before you even leave the driveway. The protection plan covers eligible damages to the RV during your rental and gives real financial peace of mind for your trip. You choose your protection level during checkout (not the host), with tiered options so you can pick the deductible and coverage that fits your comfort level. First time renting an RV? Many guests opt for a higher-tier plan on their first trip. It costs a little more but lets you focus on enjoying the Skylands region instead of worrying about the unexpected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking your Morris Plains RV rental is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a grace period right after you book where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, with additional considerations for events like severe weather (helpful in NJ where a nor'easter or hurricane remnant can roll through). The full policy details are spelled out clearly at checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Morris County rigs for fall foliage weekends, knowing you have a clear cancellation window if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Morris Plains?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Morris Plains is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see local listings whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you arrive, your pup has fantastic local options: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township allows leashed dogs on its trail network, Lewis Morris County Park has wooded trails just minutes from downtown Morristown, and Loantaka Brook Reservation offers a dedicated off-leash dog area. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm size or breed preferences and ask about any pet cleaning fee. Bring a long lead and a copy of your dog's vaccination record for any campground check-in.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Morris Plains is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a big rig through northern New Jersey traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in Morris Plains right at your campsite at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, Stephens State Park, or Panther Lake Camping Resort, and walk you through every system before they leave. Some will even deliver to your driveway for a backyard staycation. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, and check each listing for delivery radius and per-mile fees. Pro tip: delivery is the smartest move if you are flying into Newark Liberty (EWR) and do not want a rental car.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Morris%20Plains%2C%20New%20Jersey&Delivery=trueHow do mileage policies work and how far can I realistically drive?
Mileage on RVezy is set by each host, and many Morris Plains listings include a generous daily allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day), with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Morris Plains you can reach a lot without burning through miles: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is about 35 miles west, Cape May is roughly 165 miles south, the Catskills are around 90 miles north, and Lake George in the Adirondacks is about 230 miles. Pro tip: if you are planning an RV road trip from Morris Plains to multiple destinations, filter for unlimited mileage listings or ask the host to bundle extra miles into the booking price upfront.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Morris Plains, NJ?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping in Morris Plains. The closest option is Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 15 miles north), Morris County's largest park with paved RV sites featuring electric and seasonal water hookups, plus a dump station. Stephens State Park in Hackettstown (about 25 miles) sits along the Musconetcong River. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover offers a full-service family experience with a pool and lake. Great Divide Campground in Newton has wooded RV sites in the Skylands foothills. For NYC access, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is about 35 miles east. Pro tip: Mahlon Dickerson's largest pull-through site accommodates very long rigs, which is unusual for the region.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhen is the best time to visit Morris Plains in an RV?
Late April through late October is prime time for RV camping in Morris Plains, with September and October being the absolute sweet spot. Summer (June to August) brings warm days in the 75 to 88 degree F range, perfect for swimming at Lake Hopatcong, while spring offers mild 55 to 70 degree F weather and blooming dogwoods around Jockey Hollow. The real magic is fall foliage from late September through mid-October, when the Morris County hills turn red and gold (peak color usually hits around mid-October). Winters dip into the 20s and 30s F with occasional snow, so most local campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book your fall foliage RV rental in Morris Plains by July, weekends sell out fast.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay?
Yes, first time renting an RV is genuinely easier than most people expect, and you will not be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the water, propane, slide-outs, generator, and dump system, plus driving tips specific to that rig. For your first Morris Plains RV trip, consider a Class B campervan rental in Morris Plains or a smaller Class C (22 to 25 feet), which drives much like a large van. Stick to highways like I-80 west or I-287 north and avoid downtown Morristown's narrow streets and Speedwell Avenue at rush hour. Pro tip: ask your host for delivery if the idea of driving away from pickup makes you nervous, problem solved.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Morris Plains includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 10 or a dead battery at Mahlon Dickerson is one phone call away from being handled. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center for anything else, from a sticky slide-out to a question about your dump station. Your host is also typically reachable for quick how-to questions about their specific RV. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number and your booking confirmation before you leave Morris Plains, cell service can get spotty up near High Point and the Delaware Water Gap.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Morris Plains?
Morris Plains is a phenomenal launch pad for an RV road trip. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is just 35 miles west (about 45 minutes) for kayaking and waterfalls. The Catskill Mountains in New York sit roughly 90 miles north, perfect for a 2 to 3 night fall foliage loop. Cape May, the Jersey Shore's southernmost beach town, is 165 miles south (about 3 hours) and ideal for a beach week. Lake George in the Adirondacks is roughly 230 miles north for a long-weekend mountain escape. Acadia National Park in Maine is a stretch at around 475 miles but doable as a 7 to 10 day trip. Travel into Canada may be allowed, just confirm with your host and RVezy before booking, since insurance terms apply. Mexico travel is not permitted.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Morris Plains RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV trip, but it is manageable with realistic planning. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A rigs about 7 to 10 MPG. New Jersey is one of the few states where attendants pump your fuel for you, a nice perk in an unfamiliar RV. For a 4-night trip from Morris Plains to Delaware Water Gap and back (around 250 miles), budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Wawa or Costco off Route 10 in East Hanover before heading north, prices climb noticeably in Sussex County.
nj.gov/treasury/taxation/motorfuel.shtmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Morris Plains?
For peak summer weekends and fall foliage, reserve your campground 3 to 6 months out. New Jersey state park campgrounds like Stephens State Park and Worthington State Forest take reservations online, and popular weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day) often book within hours of release. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is managed separately by the Morris County Park Commission and accepts reservations online through their site. Private campgrounds like Panther Lake and Great Divide can usually be booked 1 to 2 months ahead for midweek stays. Pro tip: midweek (Sunday to Thursday) availability is dramatically better and rates are often lower, perfect for a family RV trip in Morris Plains.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Morris Plains?
Driving an RV around Morris Plains is very doable as long as you plan your route. I-287, I-80, and Route 10 are your main RV-friendly arteries, with wide lanes and standard clearances. Avoid the Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel into NYC (clearance and propane restrictions apply) and stay off narrow historic streets in downtown Morristown and Madison. Rush hour on I-287 northbound (3 to 7 pm) and I-80 eastbound (6 to 9 am) can be slow, so aim to travel midday. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through March, and summer thunderstorms can be intense. Pro tip: the Garden State Parkway has commercial vehicle restrictions in some southern sections, so route your Cape May trip via the New Jersey Turnpike instead.
state.nj.us/transportation/What hookups and amenities should I expect at local campgrounds?
Most campgrounds near Morris Plains offer at minimum electric (30 or 50 amp) and water hookups, with sewer at private parks like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Great Divide Campground. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation has paved RV sites with electric and seasonal water (water typically off November through April), plus a dump station on site. State parks like Stephens generally offer no-hookup or electric-only sites with central dump stations. You will find potable water fill stations and dump stations at most campgrounds. Pro tip: if you are staying at a state park without sewer hookups, plan to dump at the campground's central station before checkout, the next public dump option toward the Poconos is in Bushkill, PA.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Morris Plains?
Even a smaller campervan rental in Morris Plains comes with more than you would guess. Expect a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, dining seating, and roof or dash air conditioning. Class C and Class A motorhomes add a bathroom with shower, multiple sleeping areas (great for a family of 4 to 6), a generator, larger fresh and gray water tanks, and often a TV. Many local listings include Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, and kitchen starter kits. Seatbelts are provided for every traveling passenger, and the listing tells you exactly how many. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check the photos closely so the floor plan matches how your group actually uses the space at night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Morris%20Plains%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for?
Hosts in Morris Plains offer some genuinely useful add-ons: linen and bedding packages ($35 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor camping gear like chairs, grills and bikes, generators for boondocking, Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet packages. Many include a propane tank refill and a tank-empty service at return for a flat fee, which is worth every penny for a first-timer. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Morris Plains, Morristown, Parsippany, or another nearby Morris County town, but as mentioned, delivery is widely available. Mileage policies range from 100 miles/day to unlimited, so read carefully. Pro tip: ask your host about a one-way drop if you are flying out of EWR or JFK at trip's end, some Morris Plains hosts will arrange it for an extra fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Morris%20Plains%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in New Jersey is handled securely through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host. You will typically pay a portion at booking and the balance closer to your trip, all by credit or debit card right in the app. The security deposit is held (not charged) on your card just before pickup, with the exact amount shown on the listing before you book. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition (no damage, tanks emptied if required, fuel topped off per the agreement), the hold is released after dropoff. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff, it is the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes on your Morris Plains RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take the RV from Morris Plains into New York City or to the beach?
Yes, you have tons of options within easy reach. The Jersey Shore is the classic move: Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) is about 55 miles east, Seaside Heights is around 75 miles, and Cape May is 165 miles south. For NYC views without driving the rig into Manhattan, park at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (about 35 miles east) and take the PATH train across, that is the smart play for a city visit. Avoid driving any RV over 12 feet 6 inches into the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels (clearance and propane rules apply). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on your host's insurance, just confirm before booking. Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
