Camping near New Egypt, New Jersey
New Egypt sits in Ocean County, in Plumsted Township, central New Jersey, within reach of the Pine Barrens, the Jersey Shore, and Six Flags Great Adventure. The town is a practical base for RV travellers who want to mix state-forest camping with private resort stays, and it puts renters within a short drive of Long Beach Island, Island Beach State Park, and Seaside Heights.
The surrounding area blends public and private campgrounds. Brendan T. Byrne State Forest anchors the Pine Barrens options, with wooded sites, hiking, mountain biking, birding, and fishing. Private options such as Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground and Butterfly Camping Resort add full-hookup sites geared to larger rigs and families.
Farther afield, Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort and Timberland Lake Campground round out the choices for renters willing to drive for lake access or more resort-style amenities.
Things to do around New Egypt
Hiking and biking dominate the Pine Barrens experience. The Batona Trail is just over 50 miles in length and links Brendan T. Byrne, Wharton and Bass River State Forests. The Mount Misery Trail allows mountain biking, and the Cranberry Trail allows access by wheelchairs.
History and wildlife rank next. Whitesbog is a historic cranberry farming village where the cultivated blueberry was developed by Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Coville, and it sits within Brendan T. Byrne State Forest. Pakim Pond is a popular fishing and picnicking spot.
Families staying near New Egypt often pair a forest day with Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, Jersey Shore beach days, and stops at the New Egypt Speedway for weekend racing.

Central New Jersey has four distinct seasons, and campground availability shifts with them. Within roughly a 20-mile radius of New Egypt, most developed campgrounds are operational from spring through fall. Private resorts typically open in April and close in mid to late October, so RV renters targeting shoulder-season trips should confirm dates before booking.
State-forest camping runs a longer season for some accommodations. Three shelters at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, each with a lockable wood door, window screens and flaps, two double-deck bunks, table with bench seating and a wood burning stove, are available year round. Tent and trailer sites at the forest generally run spring through fall.
Summer is peak season across the Pine Barrens and shore-adjacent parks, with holiday weekends booking out well in advance. Spring brings mild temperatures and lower crowds but also wet trails and active ticks. Fall delivers drier days, foliage, and easier reservations at private resorts before they close for the season.

How to book campgrounds near New Egypt
State-forest sites are booked through the New Jersey state system. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov. The forest has 82 tent and trailer sites, each with fire rings, picnic tables and lantern hooks. Occupancy limits and vehicle rules are set at check-in, so review the current park rules before arrival.
Private resorts including Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground, Butterfly Camping Resort, Timberland Lake Campground, and Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks to several months ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Pine Barrens campgrounds are wooded and sandy, with pitch pine and oak canopy. Cell service can be patchy inside the state forest. Brendan T. Byrne is a carry-in, carry-out area, so campers should have gear ready at registration, and vehicle information is collected at check-in. Quiet hours are strictly enforced overnight, and generator use is limited outside those hours.
Private resorts near New Egypt lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and full-hookup pads that accept larger rigs. Ticks, mosquitoes, and greenhead flies are common from late spring through summer, so pack repellent and check daily.
Main access roads to the state-forest campground are paved and generally passable for standard RV rentals, but interior sand roads should be avoided.

Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes land around $175 to $295 per night, and larger Class A coaches sit between $250 and $450 per night. Because New Egypt is a small Ocean County town surrounded by Pine Barrens farmland, hosts here often price lower than nearby Toms River or Princeton listings. Pro tip: bundle a host's weekly discount with a Six Flags Great Adventure trip in nearby Jackson and you'll save even more.
visitnj.org/nj-outdoors/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New Egypt, New Jersey?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Jersey, even for big Class A motorhomes up to 26,000 pounds. There's no special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for personal-use RVs. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID confirmation through the platform. Visiting from overseas for a New Egypt RV trip? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly, pair it with your home license, and you're set to roll out toward the Pine Barrens.
nj.gov/mvc/license/basic.htmIs my New Egypt RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in New Egypt booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 539 with confidence. The protection plan covers damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. That means you decide how much peace of mind you want, whether you are heading to the Jersey Shore or deep into Wharton State Forest. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides substantial financial protection designed for peer-to-peer rentals. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers at checkout and pick the one that matches your driving comfort, especially if it is your first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New Egypt RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every booking includes a short grace period after you book where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that window, refunds depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credit. If a hurricane or major storm threatens your dates, RVezy support can help you sort options. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best New Egypt rigs, then keep an eye on the National Weather Service Mount Holly office forecasts as your trip approaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in New Egypt?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in New Egypt is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you will see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in the listing. New Egypt is a great dog town because you are minutes from leash-friendly trails in Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area and Brendan T. Byrne State Forest. Many regional campgrounds, including Butterfly Camping Resort in Jackson, allow leashed pets on site. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size notes, pack a tie-out and water bowl, and follow New Jersey state forest rules requiring pets on a leash no longer than six feet.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near New Egypt?
Yes, RV delivery in New Egypt is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campground, set up the slides, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations from New Egypt include Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest in New Lisbon, and shore campgrounds like Sea Pirate in West Creek. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts with your destination address to get an exact quote.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/byrne.htmlHow far can I drive on a New Egypt RV trip?
You can go further than you'd think. New Egypt sits in central Ocean County with quick access to I-195 and the Garden State Parkway, putting tons of destinations within easy reach. Long Beach Island is about 45 minutes east, Cape May is roughly 90 minutes south, the Delaware Water Gap is about 2 hours northwest, and Philadelphia sits 50 minutes west. New York City is around 75 miles north. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer RV road trip from New Egypt. Pro tip: filter by Unlimited Mileage if you're planning a big loop through the Poconos or down to Assateague.
state.nj.us/transportation/Where are the best campgrounds near New Egypt, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near New Egypt include Brendan T. Byrne State Forest in New Lisbon (about 15 minutes away, with quiet pine forest sites), Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold (a county-run gem with a lake and 64 sites), Butterfly Camping Resort in Jackson (family-friendly with a pool), and Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson (close to Six Flags Great Adventure). For shore vibes, Sea Pirate Campground in West Creek puts you 20 minutes from Long Beach Island. Pro tip: New Jersey state forest sites can be reserved through ReserveAmerica, and Ocean County parks book directly through the county. Both fill fast for summer weekends.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/index.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in New Egypt?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in New Egypt, with the sweet spot being May, June, and September. Summer highs in central New Jersey average 82 to 88°F with humid days, while spring and fall offer crisp 60 to 75°F afternoons and cool nights perfect for campfires. July and August are peak Jersey Shore season, so book early and expect higher rates. Winters dip to 25 to 40°F and some campgrounds close, though a few stay open year-round. Pro tip: target the first two weeks of October when Pine Barrens foliage peaks and Six Flags' Fright Fest is in full swing just up the road in Jackson.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting in New Egypt?
You'll do great, and New Egypt is actually one of the friendliest places in New Jersey to learn. The town sits on quiet two-lane roads like Route 539 and Route 528 with light traffic, wide shoulders, and almost no urban congestion, which beats trying to learn near Newark or Jersey City. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you slides, the propane system, the dump valves, and driving tips. If you're nervous, choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop on the country roads around Plumsted Township before heading to the Parkway or the shore.
nj.gov/mvc/license/drivermanual.htmWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my New Egypt RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway or a dead battery at Bass River State Forest is just a phone call away. You will also have direct contact with your host, who knows the rig inside and out and can troubleshoot issues like awnings, generators, or slide-outs. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave, keep a basic toolkit and headlamp in the RV, and note that cell service can get spotty deep in the Pine Barrens, so download offline maps for Wharton State Forest areas.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my New Egypt RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, multi-state road trips are one of the best parts of renting in New Jersey. From New Egypt you can easily reach Pennsylvania (Philadelphia about 50 minutes, the Poconos about 2 hours), Delaware (Cape Henlopen via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in roughly 3 hours), New York (NYC about 75 miles north, the Catskills about 3 hours), and Maryland's Assateague Island in about 3.5 hours. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so confirm with the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm cross-border plans in writing through the RVezy message thread so everyone is aligned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a New Egypt RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you would think. New Jersey gas prices typically run near or just below the national average, and all New Jersey gas stations are full-service by state law, so an attendant pumps for you. Expect Class B campervans to get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually a 25 to 40 percent drop from normal MPG). For a 200-mile weekend loop to Long Beach Island and back in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in nearby Wrightstown or along Route 206 where prices tend to be lower than at Parkway service plazas.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Egypt?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at popular spots like Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Bass River State Forest, or Turkey Swamp Park, book 4 to 6 months ahead. New Jersey state park sites open on ReserveAmerica.com and release on a rolling window, so set a calendar reminder. Ocean County parks like Turkey Swamp book directly through the county's reservation system. Private parks like Butterfly Camping Resort and Timberland Lake fill quickly for July and August. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are often wide open even in summer, and shoulder-season weekends in May, September, and early October usually have availability 2 to 3 weeks out.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around New Egypt, NJ?
Driving an RV around New Egypt is genuinely relaxed compared to the rest of New Jersey. You are on rural roads through Plumsted Township and the western edge of the Pine Barrens, with light traffic and gentle terrain (no mountains, no steep grades). Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Routes 539 and 528, and avoid the Garden State Parkway southbound on Friday afternoons in summer when shore traffic peaks. Most overpasses on I-195 and the Parkway clear standard RV heights, but always confirm your rig's height with the host and use a low-clearance aware GPS. Pro tip: plan shore drives for early morning or after dinner to dodge the worst beach traffic.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near New Egypt?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks near New Egypt like Butterfly Camping Resort and Timberland Lake typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), pools, camp stores, Wi-Fi, and laundry. New Jersey state forest campgrounds like Brendan T. Byrne and Bass River are more rustic, with water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and dump stations (but usually no individual sewer hookups). You can dump tanks at most state forest dump stations for free if you're a registered camper, or at Flying J on Route 206 in Bordentown. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's property if you're heading to a rustic site, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose just in case.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/byrne.htmlWhat's typically included inside a New Egypt RV rental?
Most RVs in the New Egypt area come ready to camp. Expect comfortable beds (queens, bunks, or convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower in Class B, C, and A motorhomes and most travel trailers. Many rigs include a TV, some have Wi-Fi boosters or generators, and seatbelted travel seats are standard in motorhomes. Linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are often offered as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list carefully and message the host for anything you don't see, since campervan rental New Egypt options range from minimalist Class B vans to fully loaded Class A coaches with washer/dryers.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a motorhome rental in New Egypt?
Hosts in New Egypt offer a lot of flexibility. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, fire pits, and camping chairs. Many hosts also offer pickup right from their driveway in Plumsted or Cream Ridge, and delivery to nearby campgrounds or your home for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with some offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and others offering unlimited mileage. Pro tip: when you message the host, ask about bundling delivery, setup, and a generator together, since many hosts will discount add-ons when you book multiple at once.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Egypt%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in New Egypt?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit card, and the platform holds funds until your trip is underway, so neither you nor the host handles cash. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card shortly before pickup (the amount varies by RV value and listing) and is released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, keep the inside tidy, and return with the same fuel and propane levels you started with. Pro tip: empty black and grey tanks before returning to skip any dump fee the host may charge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from New Egypt, NJ?
New Egypt is a hidden launchpad for some incredible trips. Long Beach Island (45 minutes east) offers classic Jersey Shore beaches and Barnegat Lighthouse. Cape May (about 90 minutes south) brings Victorian charm, whale watching, and Cape May Point State Park. The Delaware Water Gap (around 2 hours northwest) has rivers, waterfalls, and Appalachian Trail access. Assateague Island in Maryland (3.5 hours south) is famous for its wild ponies and oceanfront camping. Lancaster, PA Amish Country sits about 2 hours west. Pro tip: a family RV trip New Egypt loop combining Six Flags Great Adventure (15 minutes), LBI, and Cape May makes a perfect 5-day first-timer itinerary with short, manageable drives between stops.
