Camping near New Milford, New Jersey
New Milford sits in Bergen County in northeastern New Jersey, roughly ten miles from the George Washington Bridge and Manhattan. RV renters typically use the area as a base for New York City sightseeing, then head northwest into the New Jersey Highlands and lower Hudson Valley for forested camping within an hour's drive.
Options split into two clear categories. For urban access, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is positioned as the closest RV park to New York City, located at 11 Marin Blvd, with ferry and PATH connections to Manhattan. For a woods-and-water trip, Beaver Pond Campground sits within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with 125 campsites and select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length.
Additional choices include Wawayanda State Park in the New Jersey Highlands, Camp Wyanokie in the Wyanokie highlands of northern New Jersey, and Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn. Together they cover urban hookup sites, primitive state park loops, and a National Park Service campground reachable without leaving the metro area.
Things to do near New Milford
Base at Liberty Harbor RV Park to ride the PATH or ferry into Manhattan for the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and Midtown museums. The park sits five blocks from the subway into NYC, with a ferry to Wall Street leaving from the property.
For outdoor days, Harriman State Park delivers the biggest trail network in the region, with extensive hiking including portions of the Appalachian Trail, plus swimming beaches at Lake Welch adjacent to Beaver Pond. Wawayanda State Park adds a lifeguarded lake beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day, kayak rentals, over sixty miles of trails, and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Camp Wyanokie gives quick access to rugged highland hiking.
At Floyd Bennett Field, visitors can bike the flat former airfield, tour Hangar B, use an on-site archery range, and paddle Jamaica Bay from the seaplane kayak launch.

The New Milford area has four distinct seasons. Summer is peak camping season, with warm, humid weather and heavy weekend demand at every park within an hour's drive. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, and October brings strong foliage across the Highlands and lower Hudson Valley.
Season dates matter for planning. Beaver Pond opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular season with reservations running from early May through mid-October. Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 to October 31. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October.
Winter narrows the options sharply. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, making it the practical cold-weather choice. State parks in the region shift to day-use only, with hiking, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing at higher-elevation parks like Wawayanda, which sits at 1,140 feet above sea level and holds snow for winter recreation.

How to book campgrounds near New Milford
Reservation systems vary by operator. New York State parks, including Beaver Pond, use ReserveAmerica online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival.
New Jersey state parks, including Wawayanda, book through the state's system. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov. Group site reservations at Wawayanda may require contacting the park office directly.
Floyd Bennett Field uses the federal system: reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov. Liberty Harbor RV Park is booked directly with the property by phone or through its website. For summer weekends anywhere in the region, reserve as early as the booking window opens.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Expect a wide range of site types. Liberty Harbor offers 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, pull-through sites, a dump station, modern shower and restroom facilities, laundry, and free Wi-Fi, but the park is essentially a parking lot with hookups rather than a traditional campground, with sites very close together and minimal privacy.
State park campgrounds are the opposite. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups for trailers, no pets are permitted, and alcohol is not permitted at the campground. Wawayanda's campsites are group sites requiring a minimum of seven people, with no shower facilities and no water at the sites themselves; water must be carried from the main office building.
Bring water containers for state park stays, plan for tight urban maneuvering at Liberty Harbor, and confirm RV length limits: select sites at Beaver Pond can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Black bears inhabit Harriman and the Highlands, so store food accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New Milford, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in New Milford, NJ?
RV rental in New Milford is more affordable than most people expect, especially when you split the cost across a family or group. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $85 to $150 per night, campervans and Class B rentals run $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes fall between $200 and $325 per night. Hosts set their own prices, so you can find cheap RV rental New Milford options by booking midweek or traveling in the shoulder season (April, May, late September, and October). Pro tip: bundling delivery and a generator into one booking often costs less than renting them separately, and many local hosts offer weekly discounts for stays of 5 or more nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Milford?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Milford. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans, even larger Class A rigs. RVezy requires approved drivers to be 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's it, you're ready to head north toward the Catskills or south toward the Jersey Shore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance are included with my RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in New Milford comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. Protection plans cover accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout based on how much financial cushion you want. If you get a flat near the George Washington Bridge or a dead battery at a campground in the Delaware Water Gap, one phone call gets help dispatched any time, day or night. First time renting an RV? That built-in safety net is a big reason guests feel confident booking with RVezy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
You can book your RV rental in New Milford with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, not the host. There is a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, refund amounts depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. RVezy also reviews unexpected situations like severe weather, which matters in a region that occasionally sees nor'easters or hurricane remnants. Because the policy is standardized, you won't see different rules on different listings. If your plans shift, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New Milford RV trip?
Absolutely, and pet-friendly RV rental New Milford options are easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), then message them about your specific pup before booking. Once you have the rig, you'll find dog-friendly trails minutes away at Van Saun County Park in Paramus and longer adventures at Palisades Interstate Park along the Hudson. For overnight stays, Campgaw Mountain Reservation in Mahwah and Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township both allow leashed dogs. Pro tip: bring a long lead, a collapsible water bowl, and an extra towel, Jersey campgrounds can get muddy after summer thunderstorms.
co.bergen.nj.us/parks-recreationCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in New Milford?
Yes, RV delivery New Milford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig through Bergen County traffic. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a nearby campground, or even a Jersey Shore destination like Cape May or Wildwood. They'll set up the slide-outs, level the rig, connect water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. To find these hosts, use the Delivery filter when searching for a New Milford RV trip. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City if you want skyline views without driving in yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on my RV rental, and what's the mileage policy?
You have plenty of range for a great trip. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and many New Milford listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with options to pre-purchase extra miles at a discounted rate or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From New Milford, that easily covers a weekend at Worthington State Forest (about 70 miles west), a run down to Long Beach Island (around 110 miles south), or a quick hop to Harriman State Park in New York (under 50 miles). If you're planning a bigger loop like the Finger Lakes or Acadia, message the host before booking and ask about a custom mileage package, most are happy to accommodate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere can I camp with my RV near New Milford, NJ?
You are surrounded by great options for RV camping New Milford travelers love. Campgaw Mountain Reservation in Mahwah (about 12 miles north) offers wooded sites close to home. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 35 miles) has paved RV pads with water and electric hookups and is one of the few NJ spots open year-round. Worthington State Forest along the Delaware Water Gap (about 70 miles west) offers riverside camping with hiking on the Appalachian Trail. For a fuller resort feel, Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort in Sussex (about 40 miles) has full hookups, a pool, and a working farm. Pro tip: New Jersey State Park sites book through camping.nj.gov, and summer weekends fill up fast.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campreserv.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in New Milford?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for an RV trip in northern New Jersey, with the sweet spot running from mid-May through mid-October. Summer (June to August) brings warm, humid days in the low to mid-80s F and the busiest campgrounds, while September and October deliver crisp 60s-to-70s F days and spectacular foliage across the Skylands region. Spring is gorgeous but can be rainy, so pack layers. Winters in New Milford get cold (lows in the 20s F) and snowy, but a handful of hosts offer winterized rigs for adventurous travelers heading to Mountain Creek or the Poconos. Pro tip: book a fall foliage trip 60 or more days out, the peak color weekends in October sell out fastest.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. How does pickup and orientation work?
You're in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, usually 30 to 60 minutes, covering how to operate the slide-outs, water and waste tanks, propane, generator, awning, and all the basics of safe driving. You'll leave knowing exactly which buttons to push and which to leave alone. You can also message your host before booking to ask anything (Is it easy to drive? Will it fit in my driveway?), and most New Milford hosts are happy to share photos and tips. Pro tip: record the walkthrough on your phone, it's a lifesaver when you're setting up at your first campground.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 80, a battery issue at a Bergen County rest stop, or a lockout at a campground is one phone call away from resolution. Your host is also your first-line resource and can usually troubleshoot quirks specific to their rig over a quick call or text, things like a stubborn awning or the propane switchover. For anything bigger, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the VIN and roadside number before you pull out of the driveway, you'll have everything ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Milford RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and very popular for an RV road trip from New Milford. You can cruise into New York for a Catskills weekend, head to Pennsylvania for the Poconos or Hersheypark, or roll south into Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, all without any extra paperwork. Cross-border trips into Canada depend on the host and insurance setup, so message the host directly from the listing if you're dreaming of Niagara Falls or Montreal. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: popular routes from New Milford include the Hudson Valley wine trail, Acadia National Park, and the Outer Banks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for, and where do I fill up?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you would think. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined). With New Jersey gas prices typically close to the national average and diesel slightly higher, a 200-mile weekend in a Class C might cost $60 to $90 in fuel. Tall RVs should aim for truck-friendly stations like Pilot and TA stops along I-80 and I-287, where high canopies and long pull-throughs make filling up easy. Heads up: New Jersey is a full-service state, so an attendant will pump your fuel for you, no DIY required.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Milford?
For the best campgrounds near New Milford, aim to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. New Jersey State Parks like Worthington, Stokes State Forest, and Spruce Run book through the official camping.nj.gov portal, which opens reservations on a rolling basis. Private campgrounds often have last-minute openings midweek. Local insider tip: if you strike out on a weekend slot, look at Tuesday-through-Thursday stays, rates are often lower and the campgrounds are noticeably quieter. Pro tip: set up a free cancellation alert for sold-out NJ state park sites and you'll get notified if someone cancels.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campreserv.htmlWhat should I know about driving an RV around New Milford and the NYC metro?
With a little planning, driving an RV in the New Milford area is very manageable, but a few local quirks are worth knowing. The Palisades Interstate Parkway and Garden State Parkway both restrict commercial vehicles and have height-restricted sections, so route motorhomes via I-80, I-287, or Route 17 instead. The maximum legal RV height in NJ is 13.5 feet and max width is 102 inches, well within typical rental dimensions. Avoid the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels with any propane onboard (it's prohibited). Local insider tip: if you're nervous about Bergen County traffic, ask your host about delivery, the RV comes to you, fully set up. From New Milford you're under 90 minutes to Harriman State Park's wide-open trails.
state.nj.us/transportation/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near New Milford typically offer?
Most RV-friendly campgrounds within an hour or two of New Milford offer a solid mix of hookups. Expect 30 and 50-amp electric, potable water fill stations, and a dump station for black and gray tanks, with full hookups (sewer at the site) common at private parks like Pleasant Acres Farm. State park sites such as Stokes State Forest and Worthington often offer electric and water but no on-site sewer, you'll dump on your way out. Most campgrounds also have hot showers, flush toilets, and a small camp store. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a sewer hose with elbow, and a surge protector, even great campgrounds have occasional power fluctuations during summer storms.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What's included inside the RV itself?
Your New Milford rental comes ready to live in. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks for extra sleepers, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, propane stove, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and travel trailer rentals. Air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel are standard. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and a generator for off-grid power, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots as a small add-on (handy at remote spots like the Delaware Water Gap where cell service drops). Check each listing for the exact sleeps count and amenities. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' and 'Generator' to quickly find family-ready rigs for a family RV trip New Milford crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get with my motorhome rental New Milford and how does pickup work?
Motorhome rental New Milford hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip: bedding and linen packages, camp chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, especially for first-timers. Pickup is straightforward, you'll coordinate a time and address with your host through the RVezy messaging system, do a walkthrough together, snap a few condition photos, and you're off. Drop-off works the same way in reverse, usually with the RV returned with empty waste tanks and a full fuel tank. Pro tip: book add-ons at the same time as your RV, hosts sometimes discount bundles, and a pre-loaded bike rack means you'll be riding local trails on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20New%20JerseyHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy handles everything through the platform, so you'll never hand cash or a check to a host. You pay your booking total (rental, protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card when you book, and the security deposit is placed as a hold on your card shortly before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value. The hold is released after drop-off, assuming the rig comes back in the condition it left. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, and return the RV on time with the agreed fuel level and clean tanks. Pro tip: use a credit card with travel protections for an extra layer of security.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in winter near New Milford for a cold-weather adventure?
Yes, and winter can be a magical (and often cheaper) time to rent an RV in New Jersey. A handful of New Milford-area hosts offer winterized rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces, perfect for ski trips to Mountain Creek (about 45 miles), Camelback in the Poconos (about 75 miles), or weekend getaways to Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, which stays open year-round. Use the message-the-host feature to confirm the RV is rated for sub-freezing temps and ask about shore-power requirements at your campground. Pack extra propane, a heated water hose, and tank antifreeze. Pro tip: shoulder-season rates (November to March) are often 20 to 35% lower than summer pricing, making winter a smart pick for first-timers willing to bundle up.
