Campgrounds and RV parks near Newfoundland, NJ

Hiking dominates the area. Norvin Green State Forest, reached from trails near Camp Wyanokie, has rocky ridgelines with views back toward the Manhattan skyline. Wawayanda State Park carries a 20-mile segment of the Appalachian Trail plus more than 40 miles of marked trails, along with swimming, boating, and fishing on Wawayanda Lake. Water recreation is a draw at Panther Lake Camping Resort, which centers on a lake with swimming, boating, and fishing, alongside a pool and courts. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm leans into family programming and farm-themed activities. Off-property, families can reach Mountain Creek in Vernon for waterpark and mountain-coaster days, plus farms, orchards, and the Warwick Valley just across the state line in New York.

The RV season in the Newfoundland area runs primarily from spring through fall. Wawayanda State Park's group campsites operate from April 1 to October 31, matching the pattern at most New Jersey state park sites. Private resorts including Panther Lake Camping Resort and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm typically open earlier and close later, and Black Bear Campground across the New York line markets itself as a year-round destination. Summer weekends are the peak. Sites at popular private parks fill early, and reservations should be booked well ahead, especially for holiday weekends and mid-July through mid-August. Late spring and September deliver milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and easier availability. Winter narrows the options significantly. State park campgrounds are closed, though Wawayanda remains open for day use, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing when conditions allow. RV travelers arriving in the shoulder or cold months should confirm which hookups and bathhouses remain in service.

Expect a mix of Highlands terrain and lake country. Roads leading to state park sites are narrow and wooded in places, and campsites at Wawayanda can be sloped with limited level ground. Water is not available at individual campsites in Wawayanda and must be carried from the main office, and there are no shower facilities at the group sites. Private resorts in the area lean toward the family-camping model, with seasonal residents on many sites, cabins mixed among RV pads, and amenity buildings that include pools, camp stores, and playgrounds. Cell service can be spotty inside the wooded areas. Black bears live throughout the region, so food storage rules apply. Ticks are active from spring through fall. Pack for cool nights even in summer, as elevations above 1,000 feet in the Highlands drop noticeably after dark.
