Camping near Newton, New Jersey
Newton is the county seat of Sussex County in northwest New Jersey, within easy reach of the Kittatinny Mountains, glacial lakes, and the Delaware Water Gap. The area mixes state park camping with private family resorts, so RV travelers can choose between rustic lakeside sites and full-hookup resorts with pools and planned activities.
Swartswood State Park, established in 1914 as New Jersey's first state park, is the closest public option and centers on a 519-acre natural glacial lake where only electric motors are permitted. Private resorts including Panther Lake Camping Resort, Kymers Camping Resort, The Great Divide Campground, LLC, and Fla-Net Park round out the choices within a short drive of town.
Most campgrounds in the region sit in wooded, hilly terrain at moderate elevation. Sussex County remains rural, and cell service can be spotty at some sites, so downloading maps and confirming directions before arrival is worthwhile.
Things to do near Newton
Water activities dominate the warm months. Swartswood Lake supports canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, and swimming at the guarded beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the park adds a boat launch, picnic areas, and open playing fields. Bald eagle sightings are common along the shoreline.
Hiking is a short drive away in Stokes State Forest and along the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the Kittatinny ridge. Kymers Camping Resort adds an Olympic-size heated pool, splash pad, hot tub, stocked fishing lake, kayak rentals, mini golf, and lighted tennis and basketball courts, while Panther Lake Camping Resort centers on a 45-acre lake with a sandy beach, heated pool, boat rentals, and planned weekend events.
Families often mix a state park day trip with resort amenities back at camp.

The camping season in Sussex County is tightly seasonal. Swartswood State Park campsites are open April 1 through October 31, Kymers Camping Resort operates April 1 through October 31, and Panther Lake Camping Resort runs from mid-April through the end of October. Winter camping is not offered at the nearby resorts, and public campgrounds close for the cold months.
Spring arrives cool and often wet, with the Swartswood swimming beach staffed by lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day, roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Summer brings warm, humid days and the peak booking window. July is the hottest month, with average highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and heat index values that can push higher, and mosquitoes can be a nuisance in wooded sites at dusk.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. September and October bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Kittatinny ridge. Weekday stays after Labor Day are notably quieter, though bear activity is present year-round and coolers should stay stored in vehicles.

Absolutely amazing renter. The RV had everything we needed and they were very accommodating with our extension.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book a campsite near Newton
Reservations at Swartswood State Park are handled through the New Jersey State Park Service online reservation system, with sites bookable up to a year in advance for stays of up to 14 nights. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern holder. Check-in is 3 p.m. and check-out is noon. A trailer sanitary station and drinking water are available, but individual sites do not have electric hookups.
Private resorts book directly. Panther Lake Camping Resort and Kymers Camping Resort both take reservations by phone and through their own websites, and both offer sites with 30 and 50 amp electric plus water and sewer options. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill early, so booking several weeks or months ahead is advised.
What to expect on site
Swartswood is a rustic state park campground with 65 wooded or grassy sites, flush toilets and showers in a central bathhouse, a dump station, and drinking water, but no electric outlets at individual sites. Pets are permitted at only a handful of designated sites, and wood fires are not permitted; charcoal must be contained in the metal grills provided.
Private resorts skew toward family-focused amenities. Panther Lake carries a large seasonal population, which gives some loops a neighborhood feel, and full-hookup transient sites in the Cloverfield section border Route 206 and can be noisier. Kymers spreads across about 200 acres in the Kittatinny Mountains with cable TV, laundry, and a general store on site.
Black bears live throughout Sussex County. Store food and coolers in the vehicle or hard-sided storage, and expect biting insects near dusk in summer.

How much does an RV rental in Newton, NJ typically cost?
RV rentals in Newton are approachable for a Sussex County getaway. On RVezy, travel trailers and pop-ups typically range from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $200 to $325 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes range from $275 to $450 per night. Hosts set their own nightly rates, mileage allowances, and add-ons, so total cost varies with your dates and the rig you choose. To find a cheap RV rental in Newton, book midweek, target shoulder seasons like late April or October when Sussex County campgrounds are quieter, and message hosts about multi-night discounts. The savings can easily cover a day trip to High Point State Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newton%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Newton, NJ?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Newton. New Jersey treats Class A, B, and C motorhomes as personal recreational vehicles, so the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement, even for larger rigs. On RVezy, every guest must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and identity confirmation happens right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before your trip and you're set. Most first-time renters in Sussex County are surprised how quickly the booking process moves once their ID is uploaded.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/motorhomes.htmWhat protection comes with my RVezy booking in Newton?
Every RV rental in Newton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Kittatinny ridges with peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and is part of every booking, not an upsell from the host. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, from standard to more comprehensive options. It provides substantial financial protection for renters traveling on rural Sussex County roads. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around with your host at pickup and snap photos of the exterior. That five-minute habit keeps the post-trip return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Newton RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Newton is lower-risk than most people expect. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you are from your trip start date and whether unusual circumstances apply. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides booking credits. The full cancellation details live on the RVezy Help Center, so there is no listing-by-listing fine print to decode before you reserve that summer weekend at Swartswood.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Newton RV rental?
Yes, dogs are welcome on many Newton RV trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who allow pets, and you will find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in the Newton area. Once you have picked your rig, aim for one of New Jersey's pet-friendly state campgrounds nearby: Stokes State Forest, Swartswood State Park, High Point State Park, and Jenny Jump State Forest all allow leashed pets at designated sites, with proof of rabies vaccination required at check-in. For day trips, the Paulinskill Valley Trail and Kittatinny Valley State Park are local favorites. Bonus tip: pack a tick comb. The Kittatinny ridge area has an active tick season from April through October.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Newton?
Yes, RV delivery in Newton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many Sussex County hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at The Great Divide Campground, Kittatinny Valley State Park, Swartswood State Park, or Stokes State Forest, level it, hook up water and electric where available, and provide a full walkthrough before they leave. Filter for Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campground name and dates to confirm the delivery fee, which is usually based on mileage from their home base. It is the easiest way to enjoy a Newton RV trip without driving the rig yourself, perfect if you are nervous about backing into a wooded site.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038690713-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive on my Newton RV trip?
Newton is one of the best RV launch pads in the Northeast because so many destinations sit within an easy day's drive. From Newton you can reach the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in about 40 minutes, the Catskills in roughly 1.5 hours, Lake George in about 4 hours, the Finger Lakes in around 4.5 hours, Shenandoah National Park in about 5 hours, and Acadia National Park in 9 to 10 hours. Mileage policies are set by each host, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 200 miles per day, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Filter by mileage policy on RVezy to find the right fit for an RV road trip from Newton.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere can I camp near Newton, NJ?
Some of the best campgrounds near Newton are right in your backyard. The Great Divide Campground on Phillips Road in Newton offers wooded and open sites with hookups, a pool, and a lake. Kittatinny Valley State Park in Andover has lakeside areas and multiple lakes for fishing and paddling. Swartswood State Park, about 15 minutes west, sits on a glacial lake with a swim beach and tent and trailer sites. Stokes State Forest and High Point State Park, home to the highest point in NJ at 1,803 feet, round out the lineup with more rustic options. RV camping near Newton is all about lakes and ridges, so book early for summer weekends.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/swartswood-state-park/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Newton?
Newton sits in the Kittatinny highlands of northwest New Jersey, where the camping sweet spot runs from late April through mid-October. July and August bring warm, humid days with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the low 60s, perfect for swimming at Swartswood Lake. September and early October are the local insider's pick: comfortable 65 to 75 degree days, lower humidity, and brilliant fall foliage across the Kittatinny ridge. Spring (May to June) is lush but can be rainy. Winters are cold and snowy, so most local campgrounds close from late October through April. Book your motorhome rental in Newton 2 to 3 months ahead for prime fall color weekends.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I figure it out?
Yes, and faster than you'd think. Every RVezy host in Newton provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, awning, slide-outs, water system, propane, dump valves, and dashboard before you leave the driveway. You can message your host with questions any time before the trip, and RVezy customer support is available throughout your stay. If it is your first time renting an RV, start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer, choose a host who offers delivery, and book a campground with full hookups like The Great Divide. By night two you will be making coffee in your pajamas while the sun rises over Sussex County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180634-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Newton trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 206 or a dead battery at a Stokes State Forest pull-off does not end your trip. One phone call dispatches help, and RVezy support is available to coordinate with your host on anything mechanical. Cell coverage is generally solid in and around Newton, though it can dip in the deeper woods of High Point or the Delaware Water Gap, so download offline maps before you leave town. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and key control labels at pickup so you have them ready if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106554-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my Newton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV trips from Newton are easy and popular. Within a few hours you can be in Pennsylvania (Pocono Mountains, about 45 minutes), New York (Catskills, about 1.5 hours; Adirondacks, about 4 hours), Vermont, Massachusetts, or Maryland, all permitted on RVezy bookings. Cross-border travel to Canada depends on the host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking if you are planning a Niagara Falls or Montreal run. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Note that propane is prohibited in the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, so plan routes through I-80 or I-78 if you are heading east.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Newton RV road trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV trip. New Jersey gas prices are usually competitive with neighboring states, and by state law every retail station is full-service, so you stay in the rig. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 16 to 22 MPG for a campervan or truck-towed travel trailer. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Newton to the Delaware Water Gap and back, budget around $120 to $220 for fuel depending on rig size. Fill up in Newton or Andover before heading toward High Point, where stations get sparser closer to the New York border.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Newton?
For New Jersey state park campgrounds like Swartswood, Stokes State Forest, High Point, and Jenny Jump, reservations are available in advance through the NJ State Park Service booking portal (camping.nj.gov). Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day and peak fall foliage weekends in early October sell out fastest, so aim to book 4 to 6 months ahead for those dates. Private campgrounds near Newton like The Great Divide typically accept reservations year-round through their own websites. Last-minute traveler? Same-day bookings are often allowed at NJ state sites, so you can chase good weather on a whim.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Newton, NJ?
Driving an RV in and around Newton is manageable, even for first-timers. The town sits along US-206, a primary route that handles large rigs comfortably. You will encounter rolling hills (elevations between 600 and 1,800 feet), a few tight curves on county roads like Route 519 toward Swartswood, and the occasional deer crossing at dusk in the Kittatinny Valley. Avoid narrow back roads near Jenny Jump if you are in a Class A, and skip I-80 eastbound during weekday rush hour into the New York metro. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: a quick stop at the Sussex County Fairgrounds parking lot is a great place to practice turns before heading out.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities do campgrounds near Newton offer?
You will find a great mix of amenities across campgrounds near Newton. The Great Divide Campground offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer), a dump station, heated pool, laundry, and a camp store. Swartswood State Park provides a dump station, potable water, swim beach, and boat rentals, but no individual site hookups. Stokes State Forest and High Point State Park are more rustic with vault or flush toilets and water spigots. Most NJ state parks do not provide sewer or electric at individual sites except select sites at Spruce Run Recreation Area, so plan to dry camp and use the dump station at the end of your stay. Local tip: top off your fresh water tank in Newton before heading into the state forests.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/parks/What's actually inside an RV I'd rent in Newton?
More than you'd guess. Most RVs on RVezy in Newton come fully stocked with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes for kids, a functional kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Many listings include a generator for off-grid power, a TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots or cellular boosters. Sleeping capacity typically ranges from 2 in a campervan to 8 to 10 in a Class A or bunkhouse travel trailer. Check the listing's amenity list and message the host about anything specific, like a coffee maker or pack-n-play, before you finalize your campervan rental in Newton.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newton%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Newton hosts make trips easy with a range of add-ons. Common options include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bikes or kayaks, generators, propane top-offs, and pre-stocked firewood. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home in or near Newton, and delivery to your campsite is widely available for a mileage-based fee. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts including 100 to 150 miles per day and charging $0.30 to $0.45 per additional mile; some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for one upfront cost. Generator hours are typically included for the first 2 to 4 hours per day, with a small fee after that. Review the add-ons section of each listing before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newton%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is fully online, with no cash handoffs in a Newton driveway. You pay your rental total securely through the RVezy platform when you book, including the protection plan and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your credit card before the trip starts, separate from your booking payment, and the amount depends on the rig and host. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition, the hold is released after the trip ends. Pro tip: a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff is the best insurance against any post-trip surprises on your RV rental in New Jersey.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny local insider tips for an RV trip from Newton?
Here is what locals know that out-of-towners don't. First, the Paulinskill Valley Trail and Sussex Branch Trail are old rail-beds that pass through the Newton area and make incredible morning bike or dog walks from your campsite. Second, the Newton Theatre on Spring Street is a great spot for live music during your trip. Third, this is bear country: black bears are active in Sussex County, so use bear-proof food storage and never leave coolers outside the RV overnight at Stokes or High Point. Finally, the New Jersey State Fair / Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in early August is one of the largest agricultural fairs in the Northeast, and RV-friendly camping in the area books up months ahead. Plan accordingly and enjoy the ride.
