Campgrounds and RV parks near North Cape May, NJ

Cape May Point State Park covers 244 acres of ponds, dunes, marsh, and forest, with three hiking trails ranging from about 0.5 to 2 miles, the Cape May Lighthouse, and WWII-era Fire Control Tower 23 and Battery 223. The Red Trail is a 0.5-mile wheelchair-accessible path; the Yellow and Blue trails cut through wooded and coastal areas that can be muddy. Bay beaches on the North Cape May and Villas side are free and generally less crowded than the ocean beaches, while Cape May city beaches require tags between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Dog rules vary by beach and season, so check local signage before arriving. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry carries vehicles across Delaware Bay to Lewes in about 85 minutes, with reservations recommended, especially for RVs. Other draws include the Cape May Bird Observatory, Cape May County Zoo, and whale and dolphin watching trips from the harbor.

Most campgrounds in the Cape May area operate seasonally, typically from spring through mid- or late fall, with peak season running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, and advance reservations are strongly recommended when facilities reach capacity. Spring and early fall bring smaller crowds, cooler nights, and the region's famous bird migrations, which draw visitors to the observatory and the state park hawk-watch platform. September carries warm ocean temperatures with lighter weekday bookings, though October is historically the wettest month. Winter is quiet: nearly all private campgrounds close, occasional snow is possible from December through March, and Atlantic hurricane and tropical-storm risk runs from June through November, peaking in late summer and early fall. Travelers arriving in shoulder seasons should confirm gate hours, pool schedules, and store openings directly with the campground, since amenities scale back outside peak weeks.

Campgrounds in the area range from full-service RV resorts to more basic wooded parks. Most offer water and electric hookups, swimming pools, playgrounds, and camp stores; sewer hookups and 50-amp service vary by site, so confirm when booking a larger rig. Big-rig travelers should ask about specific site dimensions, since some older parks have tighter interior roads. Expect a family-oriented atmosphere in July and August, with themed weekends, planned activities, and busy pool decks. Seasonal sites are common, so short-stay guests may be camping next to long-term neighbors. No campground sits directly on the ocean; beaches are a short drive or bike ride away. Bring leveling blocks for sandy or uneven sites, mosquito protection for wooded areas near marshland, and beach tags or cash to buy them at city beach entrances in summer.
