Campgrounds near North Plainfield
North Plainfield sits in central New Jersey's Somerset County, within an hour's drive of a mix of county parks, state park campgrounds, and full-hookup RV parks that serve the New York metro corridor. RV renters have practical options in every direction: private full-service parks close to Interstate 80 and Interstate 78, county-run family campgrounds farther south, and a state park along the Musconetcong River in the northwest Highlands.
Fla-Net Park in Flanders is the closest developed RV campground, offering full hookups off Route 46 near Interstate 80. Liberty Harbor RV Park sits on the Jersey City waterfront and functions as the region's urban RV base for New York City visits. Goodland Country Club and Spa provides another nearby stay option for RV travelers.
Farther out, Stephens State Park near Hackettstown offers a small riverside campground inside Allamuchy Mountain State Park, and Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township, run by the Monmouth County Park System, has 64 wooded family sites within a 2,388-acre park in the northern fringes of the Pine Barrens.
Things to do near North Plainfield
The area combines outdoor recreation with easy access to New York City. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the PATH train and NY Waterway ferry provide direct routes into Manhattan, making it a common base for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island visits without driving into the city.
Western Somerset and Morris counties open onto the New Jersey Highlands. Stephens State Park features fishing in the trout-stocked waters of the Musconetcong River, along with picnic areas and hiking trails. The park is part of the broader Allamuchy Mountain State Park complex, with connecting trails and quiet river access.
At Turkey Swamp Park, families use the 17-acre lake for boating and fishing, over eight miles of multiuse trails, and four playgrounds, one of which sits inside the campground itself. Canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and paddleboats are available for rental in season.

Camping in northern and central New Jersey is largely a spring-through-fall activity. Stephens State Park's campground runs from April 1 through October 31 and accommodates both tent campers and small trailers, though the road layout and individual sites can be tight for larger rigs. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground opens April 1 and runs through November 15, with 64 wooded campsites of which 52 can be reserved and 12 are first come, first served. Fla-Net Park operates on a similar April 1 to mid-October window.
Summer weekends fill fastest, especially at Turkey Swamp, where the lake and playgrounds draw local families. Fall brings cooler nights, active trout fishing on the Musconetcong, and foliage across the Highlands. Winter shuts down most seasonal campgrounds in the region.
Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year round, so RV renters heading to New York City in the off season still have a viable base close to Manhattan transit.

This camper van is great and super well designed. Thoughtful useful of space and has everything you’d need. Marc is also very responsive
Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campsites near North Plainfield
Reservation systems vary by operator. New Jersey State Parks, including Stephens, use the state's online reservation portal managed by the Division of Parks and Forestry, and campsites can be reserved online in advance.
Turkey Swamp Park reservations are accepted online or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286, and are available after January 1 for that year. Stays require a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Liberty Harbor accepts reservations by phone and online, and Fla-Net Park takes reservations directly through its office. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks out.
What to expect on site
Expect a range of setups. Fla-Net Park operates as an RV-focused campground in Flanders with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, plus restrooms with showers, a dump station, laundry, WiFi, a small pool, and a playground. Sites cluster close together, and the property has a developed rather than wooded feel.
Liberty Harbor is a basic but practical option with a prime waterfront location, closer to a parking lot with hookups than a traditional campground, and big-rig drivers should be ready for tight urban streets.
Stephens State Park offers roughly 40 tent and small trailer sites with no hookups, fire rings and picnic tables at each site, and flush toilets and showers within walking distance. Alcohol is not permitted in the park. Turkey Swamp provides electric and water hookups, drinking water, a dump station, picnic tables, modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry, and fire rings, with quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near North Plainfield, NJ
How much does an RV rental in North Plainfield cost?
An RV rental in North Plainfield is one of the most affordable ways to explore central New Jersey. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. For a cheap RV rental in North Plainfield, book midweek or in the shoulder seasons (April or October) when hosts often discount nightly rates. Pro tip: rentals listed in Somerset County tend to be more competitively priced than equivalent rigs in Newark or Jersey City, so widening your search by 10 miles can save you real money for your Jersey Shore or Poconos trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Plainfield%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Jersey?
You're in luck: New Jersey does not require a special license to drive a personal-use RV, so your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Plainfield. There's no commercial driver's license (CDL) or endorsement required for any standard motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig listed on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. First-time renting an RV? Most North Plainfield hosts include a hands-on walkthrough at pickup so you'll feel confident before you ever turn the key.
nj.gov/mvc/drivertopics/cdl.htmWhat kind of protection is included with my RV rental in North Plainfield?
Every RV rental in North Plainfield booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the Garden State Parkway with peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout (the host does not set it), and coverage helps with most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip. While this is not traditional personal auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the way to the Pine Barrens or the Delaware Water Gap. Pro tip: match your protection tier to your trip, longer multi-state trips often justify the higher coverage level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my North Plainfield RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes that easy. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy across the platform, including a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your North Plainfield RV trip with confidence. If something comes up later, such as a nor'easter or a schedule shift, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You'll find the full breakdown in the RVezy Help Center and your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for summer Jersey Shore weekends, you can always review your options within the policy window.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in North Plainfield?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental options in North Plainfield are plentiful. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many North Plainfield hosts charge a small pet fee ($25 to $75) and may ask you to keep pets off furniture, easy stuff. Once you're rolling, you'll find tail-wagging options nearby: Washington Valley Park in Bridgewater has off-leash trails, and Cheesequake State Park (about 35 miles south) allows leashed dogs on most trails and at campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask for their favorite dog-friendly stops along your route.
state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in North Plainfield instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in North Plainfield is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a great choice if you'd rather skip driving a big rig through central Jersey traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your driveway, a nearby campground like Cheesequake State Park, or a trailhead near the Watchung Reservation. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it. Pro tip: delivery is especially smart for travel trailers, since you won't need a tow vehicle or hitch experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Plainfield%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on an RV rental from North Plainfield?
North Plainfield is an ideal launchpad for a classic Northeast RV road trip. From here you can reach the Jersey Shore (Asbury Park) in about 45 miles, the Delaware Water Gap in roughly 60 miles, the Poconos in about 75 miles, and Cape May in around 145 miles. The Connecticut coast is under 100 miles east. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, some offer unlimited mileage while others include 100 to 150 free miles per night with a small per-mile fee after that. Filter listings by mileage and pick the one that matches your itinerary. Pro tip: for a Shore weekend, even a limited-mileage rig usually has plenty of cushion.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Plainfield%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near North Plainfield?
You've got great options for RV camping near North Plainfield. Cheesequake State Park (Matawan, about 35 miles southeast) offers wooded sites with electric hookups, hot showers, and nature trails. Round Valley Recreation Area (Lebanon Township, about 25 miles west) has hike-in and boat-in sites with a stunning reservoir backdrop. Spruce Run Recreation Area (Clinton, about 22 miles west) features lakeside sites that are great for families. For full hookups and resort amenities, Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort in Sussex (about 50 miles north) is a popular pick. Pro tip: NJ state park campsites open for reservation up to 6 months in advance and fill fast for summer weekends, so book early.
njparksandforests.org/parks/cheesequake-state-park/When is the best time to take an RV trip from North Plainfield?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from North Plainfield, and each window has its own personality. Spring (April to May) brings 55 to 70 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and quieter campgrounds. Summer (June to August) is peak season with highs of 80 to 88 degrees, perfect for Jersey Shore beach days, though it brings humidity, so book early. Fall (September to October) is a local favorite: crisp 60 to 75 degree afternoons, brilliant foliage in the Watchungs and Delaware Water Gap, and lower campground rates. Most NJ state park campgrounds close from late fall through early spring. Pro tip: target the last two weekends of October for peak leaf-peeping.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay, most North Plainfield renters are first-timers, and they have a blast. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and the toilet system. They're real owners who genuinely want you to succeed, and you can message them anytime during your trip. For your first time renting an RV, consider a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or a smaller campervan rental in North Plainfield, both are easy to handle. Stick to right lanes on I-287 and US-22, take wider turns, and avoid the Holland and Lincoln tunnels (no propane allowed anyway). Pro tip: do a Walmart parking lot loop before heading to the highway.
nj.gov/mvc/drivertopics/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you're on the Garden State Parkway or deep in the Pine Barrens. Roadside support handles flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. For RV-specific systems (a finicky water pump, a generator hiccup, an awning question), message your host first, they know their rig inside out and usually respond fast. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: snap photos of all hookups and switches during your walkthrough so you can troubleshoot quickly if anything seems off later.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, traveling across state lines is completely fine and one of the best perks of an RV road trip from North Plainfield. Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, and the rest of New England are all fair game, your RVezy protection package travels with you throughout the continental US. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the host directly from the listing page to confirm before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Popular multi-state runs from North Plainfield include the Poconos (PA), Finger Lakes (NY), and Cape Cod (MA). Pro tip: build cushion days into any cross-border itinerary for border wait times.
cbp.gov/travelHow much will fuel cost on my North Plainfield RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable with a little planning. New Jersey gas prices typically run a bit below the national average (recently around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular), and one perk: NJ is a full-service state, so attendants pump your gas, no awkward fuel-door fumbling in an unfamiliar rig. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a campervan rental in North Plainfield gets 15 to 20 MPG, and a Class A averages 6 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 for fuel. Pro tip: top off in NJ before crossing into PA or NY where you'll pump it yourself, and the prices may climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near North Plainfield?
For peak summer weekends, book your campground 4 to 6 months ahead, and for holiday weekends like July 4th, lock it in as soon as the booking window opens. New Jersey state park campgrounds (Cheesequake, Spruce Run, Round Valley, Stephens) accept reservations up to 6 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and they fill within days for prime Friday-Saturday slots. Private parks like Pleasant Acres Farm and Butterfly Camping Resort open booking even earlier. For midweek or off-season stays, 2 to 3 weeks out is usually fine. Pro tip: if you're locked out of a Saturday night, book Sunday through Wednesday instead, many of the best campgrounds near North Plainfield are wide open midweek with significantly lower rates.
state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/What are driving conditions like around North Plainfield?
North Plainfield is a great RV launchpad because you're 5 minutes from I-287 and 10 minutes from US-22, both wide, straightforward highways. That said, central NJ has a few rig-specific quirks to know. Avoid the Garden State Parkway south of Exit 105 with anything taller than 10 feet (commercial vehicle restrictions can affect larger motorhomes). Steer clear of the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels (propane is prohibited) and route around Manhattan via the Tappan Zee/Mario Cuomo Bridge. Rush hour on I-287 and Route 22 (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) is intense, drive midmorning or after 7 p.m. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or CoPilot to avoid the region's many low bridges, especially on older parkways.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities and hookups should I expect at campgrounds near North Plainfield?
Most campgrounds near North Plainfield offer a solid mix of amenities. NJ state parks like Cheesequake and Stephens provide 30-amp electric, water spigots nearby (not always at the site), hot showers, flush toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. Private parks like Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort and Butterfly Camping Resort step it up with 50-amp service, full hookups (water, electric, sewer), pools, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Dump stations are available at most state park campgrounds and at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City for travelers heading home. Fresh water fills are standard at any campground office. Pro tip: if you're heading to a state park with electric-only sites, plan to dump and refill at the campground entrance on your way out.
state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/What features and amenities come with an RV rental in North Plainfield?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in North Plainfield includes a real bed (queen or king), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, dining seating with seatbelts, air conditioning, propane heat, and often a TV. Larger Class A and Class C rigs frequently add a generator, outdoor speakers, a backup camera, and an awning. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer the same comforts minus the cab. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter listings on RVezy by sleep count and review the photos closely so you know exactly which bed configurations and appliances come with your rental.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Plainfield%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental in North Plainfield?
Hosts in North Plainfield offer add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with cookware and dishes ($30 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), bike racks, generators (sometimes included, sometimes $25 to $50 per day), and propane fills. Many hosts offer delivery and setup for a flat fee or per-mile rate, which is fantastic if you're heading straight to Cheesequake or the Delaware Water Gap. Pickup and dropoff are typically at the host's address in or near North Plainfield, often between 1 and 4 p.m. with returns by 11 a.m. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, so filter for an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a long haul.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Plainfield%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash handoffs with the host. The rental total is typically split into an initial booking payment and a final payment closer to your trip start date. Security deposits are held (not charged) on your card before pickup and released after the trip, assuming the RV comes back in the agreed condition. Deposit amounts vary by rig value and are shown on the listing before you book. To avoid issues, do a detailed walkthrough with photos at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: keep receipts (fuel, propane, dump fees) on your phone in case you need a quick reference at return.
