Campgrounds and RV parks near Oak Ridge, NJ

Wawayanda State Park is the main outdoor draw, with a swimming beach on Wawayanda Lake, boat rentals, trout fishing, and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail crossing the park along with more than sixty miles of marked trails. Routes range from flat lakeside loops suitable for younger kids to longer climbs toward Wawayanda Mountain. Camp Wyanokie sits inside Norvin Green State Forest, which is known for rugged hiking to overlooks like Wyanokie High Point and Carris Hill. Panther Lake Camping Resort has its own lake with swimming, kayaking, and fishing, plus a pool, mini golf, and planned activities aimed at families. Day trips from Oak Ridge also reach Greenwood Lake, the Delaware Water Gap, and High Point State Park in the northwest corner of the state.

The main camping season in this part of New Jersey runs from mid-spring through late fall. The Wawayanda campground operates from April through October, and most private parks follow a similar mid-April to late-October window with reduced services outside peak months. Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends at Wawayanda State Park and at private resorts like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Kymers Camping Resort fill quickly, and reservations should be made well in advance for July and August, especially around holiday weekends. Water temperatures at the lakes are warmest in late July and August, and the swimming beach at Wawayanda operates on a seasonal schedule with lifeguards. Fall brings strong foliage color across the Highlands through October, cooler nights, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited: most private RV parks are closed, and public sites offer minimal services, with freezing temperatures and occasional heavy snow in the Highlands.

Terrain around Oak Ridge is hilly and wooded, with narrow county roads leading to several campgrounds. RV renters in larger Class A or long fifth-wheel rigs should check site length and road access in advance, particularly at state park loops and rustic areas. Cell coverage is uneven in the Highlands. Reception can drop off inside Wawayanda State Park and around Panther Lake Camping Resort, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is sensible. Hookup availability varies: private resorts typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric with water and sewer, while state park sites are more basic. Bears are active across northern New Jersey. Food, coolers, and trash should be stored inside the RV or in provided bear-resistant containers, and grills should be cleaned after each use.
