Camping near Oaklyn, New Jersey

Oaklyn is a small borough in Camden County, directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. It sits in a densely developed part of South Jersey, so campgrounds cluster in the more rural townships south and east of the borough, generally within a 20-to-45-minute drive. Most nearby options are privately owned family resorts rather than state park facilities, and they draw heavily from Philadelphia, Camden, and North Jersey visitors. Lake Kandle in Sewell, Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday, Old Cedar Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: South Jersey in Williamstown, and Four Seasons Campgrounds cover the closest cluster. These range from swim-club campgrounds to full resort parks with pools, cabins, and RV hookups. Oaklyn works well as a base for campers who want Philadelphia's museums, Camden's waterfront, and the Jersey Shore beaches all within reach of a single campsite. Atlantic City is roughly an hour east, and the Pine Barrens sit to the southeast.

Things to do around Oaklyn

Philadelphia is the biggest draw. Adventure Aquarium in Camden holds thousands of aquatic animals and a notable shark exhibit, and the Museum of the American Revolution and Philadelphia's cluster of historic sites are a short drive across the river. The Camden waterfront also hosts the Battleship New Jersey. For outdoor time, families head south to Wharton State Forest and the wider Pine Barrens for paddling, or east toward the Jersey Shore boardwalks at Ocean City, Wildwood, and Atlantic City. Closer in, on-site amenities do a lot of the work: Lake Kandle offers lake swimming, two pools, and fishing, Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday runs a catch-and-release pond and Jumping Pillow, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park: South Jersey runs pools, a swim lake with an obstacle course, jumping pillows, gem mining, and character events.

South Jersey has a four-season humid subtropical climate. Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when pools and lake beaches open and organized programming ramps up. This is also when Philadelphia visitor traffic peaks and shore-bound weekend bookings tighten, so reservations should be locked in weeks ahead for Friday and Saturday arrivals. Most private parks in the area operate seasonally rather than year-round. Lake Kandle runs from the last Friday of April through the first Sunday of October, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park: South Jersey typically opens in mid-April and closes in early November, with peak activities from mid-June through early September. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday operates year-round, with the pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and good conditions for city sightseeing. Winter camping options are limited: most sites either close or shift to seasonal-only rentals, and freezing temperatures can affect water hookups.

We had a great experience with RV Cozy Camper. The camper truly lived up to its name — it was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided, and the layout made the space feel welcoming and functional. It was easy to tow and set up, which helped take a lot of stress out of the trip. The attention to detail really showed and made us feel comfortable right away. Communication was smooth and helpful, and any questions we had were answered promptly. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we would absolutely recommend RV Cozy Camper to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable camping option. We would happily use RV Cozy Camper again for future trips!

We had a family reunion out in West Virginia the first week in August. We decided to rent an RV this how I found Rod the owner of the RV. He was very polite and up front we us the whole time. The only down fall is the no pet rule. But we definitely rent from him next year.

We had a blast on our family road trip. "Archie" was easy to drive, clean and comfortable for my family of 3, with room to spare. Rod is a really nice guy and responded quickly to any question we had. We would love to do it again soon

How to book campgrounds near Oaklyn

Nearly all campgrounds close to Oaklyn are privately operated, so reservations run through each park rather than a central system. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday books through koa.com or by phone, and honors KOA Rewards discounts. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park: South Jersey books through its own site and Campspot, with Club Yogi Rewards points redeemable across the Jellystone network. Lake Kandle operates by membership or rented campsite only and does not sell day passes, tent camping, or pet-friendly stays. Demand for seasonal sites is strong, so short-stay availability is limited and it is best to contact the campground directly. For holiday weekends across the area, most parks require multi-night minimums and enforce their own cancellation windows, with deposits often forfeited if canceled late.

What to expect on the ground

Sites near Oaklyn tend to be suburban rather than remote. Expect gravel or grass pads, mature tree cover, and neighbors close by, especially at KOA and Jellystone properties where seasonal renters occupy a share of the sites. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are common, and big-rig access is generally straightforward off I-295 and the New Jersey Turnpike. Amenities skew family-oriented: pools, playgrounds, jumping pillows, catch-and-release ponds, camp stores, and laundry are standard. Cell coverage is generally strong given the proximity to Philadelphia, though on-site Wi-Fi quality varies. Deer are common at the wooded parks, and mosquitoes can be heavy in mid-summer near ponds and low-lying areas, so bring repellent.
